the first sound in the beginning is from a video of a BN coal train going over the diamond at Deshler, OH.

No real emergency. Sometimes air hoses come apart and the train just slams on the brakes. In this instance, the train stops fast because a car derailed off camera and I decided to do something with the shot.

What was the emergency for? Also, can trains stop that fast in real life, or what is just the model?

Sometimes (in the real world) trains will loose the air pressure in the brake line which will slam on the brakes. This is an "emergency application". When I was filming this shot, the operator stopped his train suddenly because one of his cars (at the rear) derailed. I came up with the "emergency" idea as a way to use the shot.

I don't think real trains can stop quite that fast. The weight, momentum, etc.

Actually, I've been modeling the SP&S for about 30 yrs. It's just been the last 5 or so that my boys have shown interest and I've acquired a whole new era of trains!
