73 is a pretty quiet stretch of road in general, especially from bryan to the 40 interchange. to be honest i think there's been a lot of confusion, and many drivers avoid the area. i'm not complaining though - makes a quick ride for me! personally i'm glad to have the loop construction, though, because inner-city traffic has gotten very heavy over the years.
Excellent video, I'm always impressed at the fact you get great looking footage like that from a DSLR! I agree that will be one confusing road when finished, what are they thinking? Nice text bar too ;) Thumbs up!
@Freewayjim Thanks, man! You should see the videos this baby puts out when I have a Canon L-glass lens in use. ;-) The only negative with this camera is, of course, the 12-min HD recording time. That road is one big clusterf***, to say the very least.
@CosmoPhotography I bet the 12-Minute recording time per video is because of the memory card you use. I use a 32GB Memory Card, and I can film up to 2 1/2 hours per video.
@FreewayAndrew Actually, it's a hardware issue. I use a Canon 7D DSLR camera to film and it will ONLY do 12 mins (4GB) of HD recording time. If I was using a 32GB card, the clips would still cut out at 12 mins and I'd have to start a new one. It's a way for Canon to avoid paying European tariffs for camcorders and a limitation of the FAT32 system used. It's bearable, but it would give me much more flexibility if Canon allowed longer clips.
@gotthkid2 I don't claim to be the biggest proponent of either Greensboro or North Carolina, but I think that's a little harsh. Yeah, NC has it's rednecks for sure but try going to urban areas such as Raleigh or Charlotte. You def. won't feel like you're in NC. It takes all types, man. ;-)
@gotthkid2 So, I'm a redneck because I live in North Carolina? HAH! A classic redneck trait is not knowing how to spell, so... Well, look, pal, I'm sorry you don't like NC and its people. I, for one, don't exactly consider NC to be my ideal place to live either but it does have a lot of positive qualities. I think you need to get out a little more and find more people like yourself. Yeah, there may not be many but trust me they DO exist.
@gotthkid2 FYI, almost all of my family is from NY/NJ and I spent many of my younger years growing up there. I only create these driving videos to show people my travels and teach them a thing or two on geography and urban areas. I'm sorry you hate this state, but there's nothing I can do about that. Only you can try and make it positive. If you just sit around bitching about this and that then you'll just continue to be miserable. I encourage you to definitely check out Charlotte and Raleigh.
The Athens Perimeter/Paul Broun Parkway was confusing, because it carries U.S. 29, 78, 129, and 441 -- as well S.R. 8, 10 Loop, and 5. Now the only routes signed on the side of road are the 10 Loop. The other routes are only signed on the BGSs.
I-285 was supposed to be a bypass of Atlanta, but yeah...
I dont think the beltway is a waste of money. It is good for future developments. They are building this one for a reason... it has been in the plans (and already approved) for over 20 years, so thats why we have a beltway in Greensboro. I can argue that Winston Salem does not need a beltway- US 52 should just be widened and all that.
@MazdaStrider If it encouraged high density, responsible developments that will last generations, I'd be all for it. But, unfortunately, they don't. Winston has had its proposed since the '50s and I'm completely against it. I wish NCDOT had decided to give Death Valley the treatment it gave I-85 in Durham. I believe in maintaining our current infrastructure and not just building new when something gets old. Winston doesn't need a beltway, just a well done widening to 52 and parts of Business 40
@FreewayTitan Thanks! I have to walk a fine line between not making the videos boring and making them *too* informative to the point where you're not even focusing on the road. This was actually shot at around 7:30pm.
@aswchris Thanks! Atlanta built it's own beltway, I-285, in the late '60s. This encouraged businesses and residents to further relocate from the city center as they had a non congested route to travel to and from on. Two examples in my state, I-485 and I-540, have led to low density, badly planned sprawl that was once pristine farmland and countryside. I agree with you that sprawl will happen no matter what, but I think beltways encourage and further speed up the inevitable.
@Cyrus992 As much crap as I give NC for a lot of things, it is certainly a beautiful state. I have the mountains an hour away and the beach 4 hours away from where I live. Thanks for watching!
@haljackey hahaha I know, but I'm trying to make these videos an educational and informative source. I-73 is also a new interstate and I thought it would be helpful to throw in some info on it for viewers who may not have heard of it.
@VaFreeways Only with NCDOT... This road is a complete mess. The overhead directional signs are some of the largest I've ever seen as they have so many numbered roads that are on this new road and on the old one through town that replaced the relocated ones. It would have been easier to just sign the beltway as I-840 and upgrade the older interstates inside the city and call it a day, but that would have been too easy :P Thank you!
i am interested in i-73. hope every thing pans out for this project.

Is it my impression or NC highways are kept in better shape than SC and GA?

Wow, what an empty highway. I'm guessing this was filmed on a sunday.

I don't think not building beltways prevent sprawl though, look at Atlanta for example. Population grows no matter what.
