Thanks for this video!! My daughter has your type of hair and I KNEW it could curl but just didn't know how to get it to do it. Just smoothing the gel in the hair doesn't work. In spite of what every one is saying...I think this video is honest. And thats true...I have similar hair texture and experience similar situations. I appreciate your transparency and the fact it is FRUSTRATING sometimes when you go natural & you cant really do a wash and go. Its not about the fact that we don't accept or love our hair. I thought going natural was about embracing the variety of textures african hair has too offer. I have 4a hair, and I HATE when people call it "good" hair. Wtheck? GOOD HAIR IS HEALTHY HAIR. I agree with you. I have 4b hair & cried after my 1st try of Kinky curly. It was a period of acceptance. I love my hair and enjoy being natural. I dont fuss about what I have but I do understand that certain styles R not 4 me. There is a big BIG difference in 4a and 4b hair for one shrinkage is no joke and shine is sooo hard for 4b's to maintain as well as keeping a curl pattern after humidity, workouts and showering. Hmm thats strange my hair sooo thick and very course and it takes me like 2-3 minutes max for curls. Make sure your hair isnt damaged, and youre not shampooing every week and do a deep conditioner.

When I was in cosmetology, EVERYONE wanted to use my hair to style. Why? Because type 4 hair can do ANYTHING. It can be straightened or it can curl. BUT when you straighten it, it doesn't go limp. it holds a style forever and thats why beauticians like it because the end result is gorgeous. It's nice that people are going natural but what's the use in going natural if all you're going to do is wish you still had straighter hair or "better" hair type?

I like how your hair turned out. My 4b/c hair also gets curls/ringlets when I use the eco styler gel. I'm trying out several products, and this is the first on my list. So far I like it, but I prefer the look of braidouts & twistouts, for now.

All I know is if my hair is kinky, it'll stay kinky. I'm not gonna go through hell to make it a texture it's not. Yeah, I'll give it a try when I'm styling it certain days, but I learned to love my natural texture and manage it the way it is.
Experiment by using only your hands for detangling and, when possible, styling. Banish the brush to a drawer for a while. Wet your hair often (at least 3x per week) and SEE if you don’t start to see a better curl pattern in your type 4 hair after 3 weeks. I bet you will!!!
WOW!! There are a lot of comments on this vid. I didn’t read them all but I would like to comment on one aspect of the video. In segment 0:55 she said “…It takes so long to get this type of hair into defined curls…” What you don’t realize – judging from the comments – what many don’t realize is that type 4 hair HAS defined curls. The reason your hair is “cottony” instead of “defined” is b/c you are BRUSHING out the curls. Combing & brushing type 4 hair DESTROYS the curl pattern.

IMO, she doesn't have a complex (wouldn't care if she did tho). she's discovered that she has definition but is frustrated at the amount of time it takes to bring it out. that's a legit complaint.

@regi989 WRONG! the lack of a product in a black persons hair is what = frizz..hence, afros, puffs, etc.The use of a product (which ever works for your hair type) via gels, leave in conditioners etc. DEFINE our natural curl pattern which we ALL as black people have. It does not GIVE you a curl. Gels work as a clumping agent to gather the curls together so that we can see the actual curly pattern instead of frizz(which is an individual hair shaft separated and surrounded by other individual hairs

I have similar hair as hers. if I jump in the shower and out my hair looks poofy and kinky with little curls just like she described. But if I really run gel through it, it will look like hers. I'm 4b but the problem is, it takes time to run gel through it so at the end of the day you just don't care if it looks kinky or slightly curly (I don't). So 4 hair depending on curls, can look like that.

@regi989 The curls may be tigheter in 4b but with some gel and stretching we have the same look. Now lets hope it's not a texturizer she is using. Cause before I gave up chemicals all together I was able to achieve the same look with a texturizer and leave and no gel. Now that I'm completely natural and no chemicals 3rd chop I need gel to acheive the same look.
@regi989 (continued)... having 4b does not mean you don't have a curly pattern. You just need to find the right product for your hair type. 4b is the curliest(tightest) of the pattern scale.
@Nubianwizdom I've found the Kinky Curly hair products to work really well for me. That's what I currently use and am about to try this Eco styler with Olive Oil to see how that does. If you go onto "CoilKinksCurls" channel on youtube she offers alot of reviews on different hair products. MiraCurl is another product that may work for you but I haven't tried that but I do intend to. MiraCurl is a product that "CoilsKinksCurls" recommended and her results came out nice. Trial and error basically.

At first, she wouldn't even GO NATURAL because she would never be able to get her hair to "curl". The thing is, being natural is much MORE than having "curls". It's about acceptance. I know it must be frustrating to not get your hair to behave the way you think it should. I have been frustrated many times too but try not to negate yourself in front of your daughter. She will internalize what you perceive about your hair as a defect in her self. The curl of your hair is more complex than you think. I am mixed and my hair won't curl a darn. Some of my family members are white and they have no curl in their hair either. No worries. One Love.

The beauty of type 4 hair is that it can do everything and I mean everything that every other type of hair can do. But it can also do what the other types CAN'T do. I think her hair looks nice. I have the same type of hair, and hell I get a little jealous too of the other types of hair. It can be a pain getting and managing styles, especially for someone who is new to the natural scene. If I were her I'd be excited too to finally get a defined curl. They're simply pretty. Not saying the puff or other style/texture isn't nice too, but it's nice to finally see change in your hairstyles and finally know there's another style to use.

I appreciate your transparency and the fact it is FRUSTRATING sometimes when you go natural & you cant really do a wash and go. Its not about the fact that we don't accept or love our hair. I agree with you. I have 4b hair & cried after my 1st try of Kinky curly. It was a period of acceptance. I love my hair and enjoy being natural. I dont fuss about what I have but I do understand that certain styles R not 4 me. There is a big BIG difference in 4a and 4b hair for one shrinkage is no joke and shine is sooo hard for 4b's to maintain as well as keeping a curl pattern after humidity, workouts and showering. When I was in cosmetology, EVERYONE wanted to use my hair to style. Why? Because type 4 hair can do ANYTHING. It can be straightened or it can curl. BUT when you straighten it, it doesn't go limp. it holds a style forever and thats why beauticians like it because the end result is gorgeous. I like how your hair turned out. My 4b/c hair also gets curls/ringlets when I use the eco styler gel. I'm trying out several products, and this is the first on my list. So far I like it, but I prefer the look of braidouts & twistouts, for now.
As for the hateful people responding, they're the ones who need counseling. It was nice to see a real, honest testimony, even if it deferred from my experience/opinion. I didn't see anything wrong with this video, but then I wasn't looking.

Gosh, I just did the BC and my hair is very short now, and I have a very cottony hair texture and you make me feel like I'm starting off with Shit. Maybe you should just speak for yourself.

I just found this video. Your hair looks great. It's just too bad that it's fully of glorifying another type of hair and bad-mouthing your own (which is true black hair). You really don't seem to like yourself. I often wonder how the "good hair/bad hair" ignorance gets perpetuated and your video is a great method of continuing that division. Thanks.

All I know is if my hair is kinky, it'll stay kinky. I'm not gonna go through hell to make it a texture it's not. Yeah, I'll give it a try when I'm styling it certain days, but I learned to love my natural texture and manage it the way it is.

Experiment by using only your hands for detangling and, when possible, styling. Banish the brush to a drawer for a while. Wet your hair often (at least 3x per week) and SEE if you don’t start to see a better curl pattern in your type 4 hair after 3 weeks. I bet you will!!!

WOW!! There are a lot of comments on this vid. I didn’t read them all but I would like to comment on one aspect of the video. In segment 0:55 she said “…It takes so long to get this type of hair into defined curls…” What you don’t realize – judging from the comments – what many don’t realize is that type 4 hair HAS defined curls. The reason your hair is “cottony” instead of “defined” is b/c you are BRUSHING out the curls. Combing & brushing type 4 hair DESTROYS the curl pattern.

your so right, I have cotton texture hair when i get out the shower. I have never tried to define my curls with any products because i feel they won't be defined but watching your video is motivating me to try it. thanks for the video, I'm def going to try it out, I hope it comes out ok for me. =)

I think this was a good informative video-I hate that I went back to a relaxer, I am now in transition again after a yr of relaxer and hair breakage(dumb):) I am encouraged again now that I have seen this video that I can have curl def w/4a-4b hair, thanx much jwhjprins for the encouragement-ignore all the criticizing comments even tho ppl r entitled to their opinions!!!!!!

IMO, she doesn't have a complex (wouldn't care if she did tho). she's discovered that she has definition but is frustrated at the amount of time it takes to bring it out. that's a legit complaint.
she believes she's a 4b, so she complains about the difficulty in defining that hair type. that's where the problem starts.

i'm amazed at how many people seem to believe that undefined without gel = 4b. if she REALLY had 4b hair, then no amount of gel would've given her any curl. she's a 4a. had she not incorrectly labeled her hair (and then proceeded to whine about 4b's natural characteristics, i.e., lack of definition), then she wouldn't be getting all this criticism.

@regi989 WRONG! the lack of a product in a black persons hair is what = frizz..hence, afros, puffs, etc.The use of a product (which ever works for your hair type) via gels, leave in conditioners etc. DEFINE our natural curl pattern which we ALL as black people have. It does not GIVE you a curl. Gels work as a clumping agent to gather the curls together so that we can see the actual curly pattern instead of frizz(which is an individual hair shaft separated and surrounded by other individual hairs

i'm noticing an interesting trend. more and more 4b's are asserting that their hair is also curly, and seem to get frustrated when others don't consider their hair curly.

@regi989 yeah.... your right that a 4b is not going to have a curl size of her diameter but in your comment , I think you said that 4b hair does not curl which is not true. It's just a little bit tighter curl pattern. I'm a 4b and have loads of curls that people comment on all the time. I use the KinkyCurly products.

@peacelovenmelons Maybe she is 4a but to me 4b hair looks similar to this if you go to google image. I have similar hair as hers. if I jump in the shower and out my hair looks poofy and kinky with little curls just like she described. But if I really run gel through it, it will look like hers. I'm 4b but the problem is, it takes time to run gel through it so at the end of the day you just don't care if it looks kinky or slightly curly (I don't). So 4 hair depending on curls, can look like that.

@regi989 FAct yes it is. You just see a lot of 4b that give up on there hair or don't give a shiiii!!!! about there hair. I'm 4b and mine looks like her hair with gel and I use eco gel. But my hair is shorter. Without gel I can get a slight curly look but it's more kinky. The thing is I would rather have soft hair instead of hard curly hair. your probably thinking 4c. Sorry but not every 4a or b has to be kinky and nasty looking if you have looser curls without gel, yeeeeaaa for you.

@regi989 The curls may be tigheter in 4b but with some gel and stretching we have the same look. Now lets hope it's not a texturizer she is using. Cause before I gave up chemicals all together I was able to achieve the same look with a texturizer and leave and no gel. Now that I'm completely natural and no chemicals 3rd chop I need gel to acheive the same look.

@regi989 (continued)... having 4b does not mean you don't have a curly pattern. You just need to find the right product for your hair type. 4b is the curliest(tightest) of the pattern scale.

@Nubianwizdom I've found the Kinky Curly hair products to work really well for me. That's what I currently use and am about to try this Eco styler with Olive Oil to see how that does. If you go onto "CoilKinksCurls" channel on youtube she offers alot of reviews on different hair products. MiraCurl is another product that may work for you but I haven't tried that but I do intend to. MiraCurl is a product that "CoilsKinksCurls" recommended and her results came out nice. Trial and error basically.

I just feel like you are very unsatisfied with your hair and that's so sadddd. My cousin has 4b/4c hair and I have 3b/3c/4a hair. At first, she wouldn't even GO NATURAL because she would never be able to get her hair to "curl". The thing is, being natural is much MORE than having "curls". It's about acceptance. Embrace your poofy-ness. Sometimes, I WISH my hair would poof more. lol. It just flops down pitifully when I try to wear a cute fro. =\ Good luck!

I know it must be frustrating to not get your hair to behave the way you think it should. I have been frustrated many times too but try not to negate yourself in front of your daughter. She will internalize what you perceive about your hair as a defect in her self. The curl of your hair is more complex than you think. I am mixed and my hair won't curl a darn. Some of my family members are white and they have no curl in their hair either. No worries. One Love.

@pyschotictree I don't think people are reacting to the fact she uses gel. People are reacting to the fact that she keeps talking about how bad her hair is without it. The beauty of type 4 hair is that it can do everything and I mean everything that every other type of hair can do. But it can also do what the other types CAN'T do. Clearly she has a curl pattern because we can see it in the video. So that just means she has had to search to find what brings out her curl.

Tell it sista! After fighting with your hair so much and trying to get it to do what it doesn't want to do, it becomes frustrating. Some hair, like mine, is very rough. I almost couldn't get a curl pattern following jwhjprins' methods.

If you dont like you natural hair then perm it and use rollers to curl it. 4b hair is nice even if you cant 'curl it easily, not everyone wants curls

Thank you, good video. I tried Eco gel for the first time this morning, and you are right.....this is the first time that my curls have been so well defined. I was really shocked to see all the spirals....lol. I do think I used to much gel though, and I'm going to just play around and try and improve on my technique. Thanks

I think her hair looks nice. I have the same type of hair, and hell I get a little jealous too of the other types of hair. It can be a pain getting and managing styles, especially for someone who is new to the natural scene. If I were her I'd be excited too to finally get a defined curl. They're simply pretty. Not saying the puff or other style/texture isn't nice too, but it's nice to finally see change in your hairstyles and finally know there's another style to use.
