@grittygreenhorn The Cherubic is the hymn of the cherubim. It is chanted in the Divine Liturgy. It is a solemn moment in which the priest puts the gifts on the holy table and prepare them for transformation. You can watch this also as Lord Jesus is taken to His tomb. In the time of this chant..we let the world and try to imitate the angels. The message of the chant is extremely important for a christian life and it offers a deep spiritual feeling to anyone who offers his soul to God!
Well yes, but specifically "modern" (i.e. post-Vatican II) Catholicism.
The music of the Tridentine Mass, while a lot different from the chant of the Eastern Church, was much better than the contemporary tripe so common in American Catholic churches today.
@grittygreenhorn Just want to point out that if you look at the history of protestantism, they broke away from the (catholic) church which is second closest to the first church ( Orthodox ) which all the original hymns came out of. The more they try to create something their own, sadly, they grow farther away from the truth of it all. Namely, because anything man made is fallen by nature.
@grittygreenhorn The Cherubic hymn is sung in the Orthodox church when we receive Holy Communion, there are a lot of different ones in which this hymn is chanted.
Yes, you are right. Even more than that, the cleric with the square halo must have also been the donor, ie the person who paid for the construction of the mosaic, as was customary at that age.

What exactly is a "cherubic" Hymn? This does sound completely different and deeper than anything modern protestantism is creating.

What a splendid hymn! I see the square halo in the first picture, means the person was depicted during his own lifetime? Very interesting.
