its amazing that some people could look at this and see proof of evolution, and some can watch it and see proof of an intelligent designer, and still some can see it and say “I don’t get it,”lol
I found this really interesting, I've recently discovered fractal dimension, and am applying it to matierals at the nanoscale - pretty much the other end of the 'size spectrum' compared to this presentation. It's interesting how fractal dimensions pop up in so many facets of life.
I thought he was going to speak on the role of knowledge now that what we need to know can be found quickly on the internet. Would have been more interesting to me.
I think the book "Actor Network Theory and after" by John Law and John Hassard will be relevant reading for a lot of people that found this video interesting. It can be found on google scholar/books.
It makes sense that the animal kingdom not use a tree to represent them due to the fact that they eat each other. I like thinking of the spider web. A lion killing a zebra and leaving some remains then has repercussions for the flies and maggots and vultures who don't actually kill the animal. So the branches don't represent that because they don't show the CONNECTIONS. Overall an interesting video.
wait, so this order disorder thing. He said complexity is made up of simple patterns; zooming into the network makes the connections simple. What I am thinking is, that the simplicity can also be found on the other side of the spectrum. Watching the network from afar you can grasp correlations that can only be seen from the distance. Coming from there I am not sure if you can say networks are the new trees. I think they can and will coexist as paradigms.
An idea will live forever, even if the person is no longer alive. Idea will stays on.
especially in this era of interconnectedness, never underestimate even the importance of ONE tiny single small little idea, 'cuz in these days, it can GROW and keep expanding permeating into different sectors of the Planet.
the Occupy movements thing is probably one of that example, all starting from one tiny little idea, and boosted immensely by the internet.
Why do so many people resort to metaphysical explanations when the physical world itself is such an intriguing place? We evolved to look for patterns, and we need to be wary of ferreting out patterns which reflect the underlying dynamic.
There are some truly excellent insights in this video.
Thumbs up if you think he's REALLY cute.

Don't use trees use webs to describe systems of nature. There, I just saved you 18 minutes of your life.

I wish he had talked about 'hubs" and how they can influence and even control networks.
