I can't believe that anyone could criticise Hopkins' performance here. He's an actor recreating a human being - a monster, but a human being. He gives every role he ever plays absolute clarity and a totally convincing inner life. He does exactly that here, even when the task's almost impossible. He's not doing an impression or an impersonation, he's breathing life into a character, in this case a tormented, psychotic fanatic, and he's totally credible. He never disappoints. Ever!

Haven't seen this one but there was a series on cable tv that was an all German made production about Hitler's last days. I thought it was really excellent especially the actor who played Hitler. Sorry I don't recall the name of the series.

Having said that, this is not how Speer told it. He said that the reason he could put his plan into action was practical: the filters were too high - like chimneys and certainly not on the ground - and he couldn't reach them without attracting attention. Personally, I think that even though he considered the plan to the point of securing the gas, he just wasn't the type to go through with it. Ironically perhaps, Albert Speer was no killer.

And the German actor in Der Untergang did the best job of all. it is very hard to find likenesses for people like Goering (however, Brian Cox looked and acted much like Goering in the 2000 TNT film "Nuremberg"). i have seen no one come as close to Goering as he. Rutger Hauer in "Inside the Third Reich" was a good Speer.

All they had were statements from the Fuhrerbunker survivors-most of those statements were false because of faded memories. In the 1990's they had uncovered new evidence of what really went on there. The last living Bunker survivor, Rochus Misch, finally came forth with the truth.

Any viewers who object to the cast coming from different countries with different English accents should remember that there would be just as great a range if they were talking German, especially as there is no prejudice against speaking with a regional accent in Germany, as is still often not the case in the UK, however high you may be in the social scale. Much better than fake German accents.
