  • would you recommend getting a 18-135 or the 17-40 l, upgrading from a 18-55 kit for everyday use?

  • good video.. subscribed :)

  • I think Canon`'s 17-55 2.8 and Sigma's 17-50 2.8 are better choices

for a walkaround lens on a APS-C Body. The 17-40 has only an Aperture

of 4 and no IS. It`s a good ultra wide for Full Frame but it's not that useful on a

    APS-C Body.

  • could this be used as a wide angle for my t2i?

  • @skatepreme it wont be that wide. I'd look at the tokina 11-16 if you want a good wide angle lens for your t2i

  • @dipmvideos I looked at that but it doesn't work for full frame sensors. I'm gettng a vivitar 7mm but I want something less wide aswell. Do you know anything about the 35mm f/2 or the 28mm 1.8?

  • @skatepreme i used the 28 recently and its pretty good.

  • @dipmvideos would you suggest it for a wide angle lens?

  • @skatepreme it's almost a 50mm equivalent on that. It's not wide at all.

  • @dipmvideos True. What would suggest I get? I'm looking for something similar to the sigma 10-20

  • @skatepreme why dont you get the sigma?

  • @dipmvideos it only works on crop sensors

  • @skatepreme aren't you using a t2i?

  • @dipmvideos yeah but when I upgrade to a 5dmk2 later I would have to sell that lens. but I could always sell it to help pay for the 5d. I just didn't know if their was better choices then the 10-20

  • @skatepreme i have a t2i with me right now so i might post a video with it using this lens soon. if you are gonna get a lens for a crop camera, i think the tokina is a better option.

  • @dipmvideos yeah but if I'm buying a 700$ lens I'd rather have it work on full frame as well

  • @skatepreme you should really buy for the stuff you have right now. you never know when you'll be upgrading. if you dont wanna lose money, buy used and sell it for the exact same price when you're done using it.

  • @dipmvideos That's true. I thought about the sigma 30mm but I saw the canon 35mm f/2 but like you said it almost a 50mm lens

  • What are good L lenses that will take awesome pics with a crop camera. Considering a 50mm L lens for my 7d as well . Will it work good with my 7d

  • @krazy4baja If on a 7D, I honestly just go with the f/1.4 USM for a 50mm. But the common lenses that work great are the 24-70mm f/2.8L USM and the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II USM. A 16-35mm f/2.8 USM II works great as well, but you should look at some of the primes from the L lenses too :) I've read on a few sites that the 50mm f/1.2L is only sharp (nicely sharp that is) at apertures smaller than 1.2.. but most people would go with the 1.4 USM and save the extra $1400 :)

  • So will a crop camera take the full picture that you're looking through the viewfinder or will it come out when printed on photo paper cutting part of the picture out that you seen through the viewfinder and reviewed on the camera screen

  • Thanks for the info. I have a 7d and will consider this lens when I have the money. Kinda disapointed that the 7d is a crop camera as I did think it was full frame. Just got confused with the viewfinder being 100% compared to 96 or so % of other viewfinders on other cameras but that's ok.

  • Wow! You explained it right on. I've been looking for examples of full body and crop sensor cameras and you explained it well.

  • At 2:08, did you say "crap" camera?

  • thanks man!that's a great review of this lens!im totally convinced to buy this lens on my 7d!i already got the 100mmf2.8L on my camera and the IQ is really way better compare to a non-L lenses..cheers!

  • Hey man - thanks for the video - I am stuck for a choice between canon 17-40 L F/4 and Sigma 17-50 F/2.8 Image stabilised lens - in low light situation with IS and a F/2.8 the sigma would be pretty awesome - but on the other hand Canon L series with the sweet spot would be pretty sweet and it doesnt extend when zooming in or out (sigma does quite a bit). Sigma sharpness is meant to be good as well - both are in the similar price range - your comments? Thanks in advance. I have a T3i.

  • I primarily shoot with a 5D II, and am a professional conservation photographer. I wanted a lightweight camera for extremely strenuous hikes/climbs and I thought my 17-40 would be a great fit on a t3i. As you've pointed out, it works fabulously on crop sensor. Great build quality, super sharp, and for what you get, not too heavy or bulky. Some are saying otherwise on the web. For the record, they are totally full of it. This lens is totally sweet on a crop body.

  • how does this perform at night?

  • @mingii night? what do you mean? what kind of lighting would there be?

  • @dipmvideos Not sure if this has already been cleared up, but he means IQ in low light settings.

  • @SupremeCleric still the same. i mean, its an f4 lens. I'm asking how dark it would be to know if f4 would be fast enough. The rest is really about ISO. if youre talking about grain and stuff, that's dependent on the camera, not the lens. So IQ in low light depends on the body.

  • Ei nico, do you use this lens shooting people or for landscapes only? Very helpful vids u got here.

  • @herb people too!

  • Alright thank you!

  • @herb no problem!

  • Sorry to disagree, but I think there are better normal zoom lenses for crop cameras in the same (and lower) price range. Canon 15-85 3.5-5.6 IS, Canon 17-55 2.8 IS or Tamron/Sigma(not sure about the sigma) 17-50 2.8 VC/OS for example. With these lenses you'll get image stabilization, better focal length range and in some of those lenses f/2.8. Also the hood on 17-40 looses a lot of it's effect with a crop sensor.

  • @Samgy1 i also forgot to mention another reason why people look to buy the L series. a lot of people dont like buying twice, and so they buy full frame lanses just in case they decide to upgrade their body in the future. sure, you can sell lenses and buy new ones, but you usually lose some money in the process. i do however completely agree in you saying that there better options from crop cameras. the 17-55 surely is a beast. the build quality doesnt match that of an L lens though.

  • @dipmvideos I agree with you on these things. None of the lenses I recommended can match an L in build quality. I know there are plenty of people thinking the way you suggested. I just think one should buy what's best for him now, 'cause lots of people will never do the upgrade to FF. Also the prize drop on lenses isn't that bad. Specially if you buy used lenses in the first place.

  • @Samgy1 all true! thanks for the input! people will really appreciate all of the things you mentioned! and thanks again for watching!

  • Hi nico! Got this lens but im not sure if its sharp enough or im just too picky. Can u send me a photo using your 17-40? Please.. Just need to compare it with mine. Thanks!

  • @herb check out the dumaguete set on my flickr page!

  • what happened @ 3:00 you scared me hahaha. Great video =)

  • @seanyyg haha, i actually dont know why i looked to the right! :P

  • Great Info! thx mate:D

  • @pgsyndrome thanks so much!

  • ugh wish i got this instead of my p.o.s sigma 17-50.

  • @gregztheshiz27 i never tried that lens. is it really that bad?

  • @dipmvideos Okay I think the build is pretty bad for 670 dollars.. and also the autofocus = complete shit. Like it hunts and doesn't know what it's doing. It back-focuses on my Xsi like all the time. I got it because of the 2.8 and O.S., but I literally feel like the O.S. isn't doing anything half the time. And it makes this horrible rattly noise which Sigma says is the O.S... but like It's so annoying. I HATE IT SO MUCH LOL.

Have you heard anything about the 28 f1.8 from Canon?

  • Thanks Nico, my brother have a t2i, and is looking for a lens like that but he wants to have aperture of f2.8 al least. I will refer him this video. Thanks.

  • @spascalin no problem!

  • @spascalin you should tell him about the 16-35mm 2.8 it is a great lens but a bit more expensive

  • @DavidHeatonPhoto yup, its a great lens.

  • @DavidHeatonPhoto thanks I will tell him about it.

  • holy shit, you have a good timing! I mean, I was just thinking about getting this lens tom and your review showed up!

  • @snitchma02 it seems like a lot of people want to get this lens! it was a conversation with a friend that inspired me to make this! haha

  • @snitchma02 me too ;)

  • Thanks for review man.Good job

  • @urbanfibua thanks!
