The FJ40 is the one of the best if not the best true off road cars ever. It is easily better then any of the new stuff that is built primarily for the road. If I were to buy a modern off road vehicle. I want it to be absolutely the best off road. not decent off road and decent on road. So my vote is for the old.

No new 4x4 could hope to compare to the old ones. People had balls back then, and so did their vehicles. Now everything is compromised to have a better ride, more safety, etc. It's actually more environmentally conscious to keep an old one on the road than to build a new one in its place. People are dumb.

That was a pussy decent at the end and you're not supposed to hold down the breaks because you can warp them and they will fail causing you to have no breaks and you will roll down to your death. You NEVER use brakes going down a steep hill like that. You keep it locked in 1th gear and let the engine brake for you. It's preventing the wheels from locking up what happens when braking and making it dangerous because the jeep will start sliding...

The Patrol does have the advantage of a diesel engine, but in all seriousness, a more appropriate comparison would be the Jeep Wrangler 4-door version, the Hummer H2, the Toyota Landcruiser, and then the Toyota FJ Cruiser.
Having been taught how to drive cars on an old M38A1 (1950's era military Jeep, basically the CJ3), the older 4x4s are outstanding! They had flexibility, and because they were all mechanical, it was up to the driver to know what he was doing off-road, and adjust as necessary.
I am a fan of the old one, but to make it even you must get SIMULAR wheel bases and two people with SIMULAR driving experience, this old guy isn't as crazy as the young guy, and the old toy should have had a cage, I wouldn't drive that old vehicle down there either without good brakes or a cage.

I happen to get mine for free off craigslist.... it only had 112k original miles but needed some reassembly.... Top Gear is Top Gear. I think it's all great. (except for Russian and Korean, but only because I don't understand their languages) Still, none are better than the UK version.
The main advantage of an older 4x4 is the attitude you have towards 4x4ing. If i bought a brand new landcruiser or patrol, I don't think I'd be too keen to getting it scratched or dented in the bush, whereas the early 90's Mitsubishi Pajero and Lada Niva I've had, I'd just take anywhere. If they ended up with some scratches or dents, who cares. Having said all that, the Lada Niva is one of the most capable cars you'll get your hands on!

I've got a 78 FJ40 (short wheel base) and a 2007 Jeep Wrangler (long wheel base). Both raised, both on big wheels, both with more aftermarket components then Pamela Anderson's body and I can tell you from experience that the poor old FJ40 doesn't stand a chance. Given that the Jeep is at least 5 times the price of my FJ...If you spent $20k on the FJ then you'd have one hell of a 4wd...but that's not the point of the comparison. New is better. nuf said.

the fj would have gone down that just fine, put it in 4-lo first gear and crawl down. I would take an old jeep cj, a landcruiser, or an international scout over any of these new soccer mom 4x4's. Accept for the jeep wrangler, that vehicle has stayed true to its 4 wheeling roots, I own a 2004 jeep wrangler and I would have gladly done any of these challenges with it.
They should have picked another short wheelbase 4x4 to compare to the FJ40.

I've got a 78 FJ40 (short wheel base) and a 2007 Jeep Wrangler (long wheel base). Both raised, both on big wheels, both with more aftermarket components then Pamela Anderson's body and I can tell you from experience that the poor old FJ40 doesn't stand a chance. Given that the Jeep is at least 5 times the price of my FJ...If you spent $20k on the FJ then you'd have one hell of a 4wd...but that's not the point of the comparison. New is better. nuf said.

It just isn't a fair comparison so it is a compromised competition from the start.

the fj would have gone down that just fine, put it in 4-lo first gear and crawl down. I would take an old jeep cj, a landcruiser, or an international scout over any of these new soccer mom 4x4's. Accept for the jeep wrangler, that vehicle has stayed true to its 4 wheeling roots, I own a 2004 jeep wrangler and I would have gladly done any of these challenges with it.
