Great info. I think the reason people's metabolism slows down from dieting is because leptin levels get low and this is mainly due to a low carb diet. That is why having cheat meals or days is important to boost leptin levels back to the set point. This should never be an issue with fasting once or twice a week and eating full Balanced(carbs, fat, protein) meals the rest of the week. One more reason why fasting rules.
well... has anyone studied the Acuspeed 24 Diet (search on google)? I am told some unbelivable chatter about it and my father burned crazy amounts of fat using it.
Holla! Have you considered cleverous 402 diet (just google it)? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my friend lost crazy amounts of weight with it.
Oh hey! Have you thought about intellectus 424 diet (just google it)? Ive heard some great things about it and my work buddy lost lots of weight with it.
Interesting stuff Brad, but how do you explain the rebounding that happens after continuous low calorie diets,, diets of say more than 500 calorie daily deficit? We've all been told rebounding happens because the bodies metabolism has slowed down so much that when the person is finally on a maintenance diet it packs on fat faster. Are you saying that our bodies never go into starvation mode and become more efficient at burning energy and storing fat? I thought this was a protection mechanism?
thanks for this information- I was really thinking about this matter, and I was wondering about if fasting would lower my metabolic rate.. you know because the current mainstream theme is that if you don't eat every 3-4 hours your going into starvation mode.. this helped clear a lot of things up for me,, thanks! I think I will fast tomorrow..the only thing im worried about now is not getting enough nutrients if I fast on a regular basis or that I might start loosing muscles.. any thoughts?
Hey, great info! Also to add is to consider that people who weigh more need to lug around more weight when they go through their daily activities. So a walk for an obese person can equal a run for a lean thin person. My obese girl friend has massive strength because of this! She can kill in an arm wrestle and she doesn't ever work out.
I fast 21 hours every few days Ive never noticed a major hault in fat loss and lost 78 lbs in a year. went from 30% bodyfat to 10% I just eat normal on my regular days and lift weights..its so simple that it should be a joke. However so many ppl are what I call planners .they talk and google and research but they forgot one thing..Oh ya! you actually gotta do it to! lol welcome to the matrix neo uve been unplugged lol Just do it period. and realize that its gonna take time maybe even along time
I have 10% bodyfat almost a 6 pack, big chest, arms muscle cuts and viens in my forarms Ive been fasting for about a year. The ones who type on here about how scary this is are most likely overweight or skinny fat. I love fasting and I have the body to show for it. Whats the difference? its simple Im not a crybaby I just do what needs to be done and I dont care about science or anything else..why? cuz I got the body to show for it. Its simple ppl just do what u gatta do to lose fat. Period.
@bradpilon Question: the study with the ladies who only had 500 calories- if they had done some sort of resistance training would their metabolism have stayed the same or gotten faster?
@landrewsster We need a healthy metabolism rate. Metabolism is the rate that the body uses energy. If the metabolic rate is slow, energy usage is slow and everything slow down. It takes energy to stay conscious, stay warm, move, digest food, repair cells, and run the immune system. In the old days people died when their metabolism dropped. There is a reason why metabolism is related to longevity. Women who have a metabolism 20-25% less than healthy people are half dead already.
This makes so much sense to me that is why weight watchers lowers the amt you can eat daily when you reach certain weights so that you continue to lose weight. I have just done my first week of eat stop eat and it worked well for me I still worked out not realizing that I always exercise at 5 am in a fasting state. i have 45 more pounds to go and I know this plan will get me there when I reach goal I plan to only fast 1 day a week. Thanks for all you do.
@cynthiaall Completely depends on height and the amount of LBM (which also depends on height)...but in the end, when compared to healthy women ON AVERAGE there wasn't much difference...as groups they all fell around 1,200 to 1,400 ish
@bradpilon So the post diet metabolism is 20-25% below normal. People go into a coma when their metabolism slows by 50%. These women have a metabolism that is half way to coma level. Nobody is going to feel good or have any energy when their metabolism is that low!!!
@bradpilon Normal is the metabolism of healthy women, i.e. women who have never been obese. Which you say have a resting metabolism of between 1200-1400. The formerly obese women in the study you presented had a metabolism slightly over 1000. These women had a low metabolism both before and after losing weight. Metabolism isn't just important for weight loss purposes. If you want to be able to function and enjoy life, you need to have a reasonably high metabolism.
"A medical condition called d_ _ _ _ _." LOL! Another awesome video. I like how you always throw the numbers out there and have cited studies in the past. I find it super interesting over the boring writing you usually see on diet and nutrition that try to make the info "idiot friendly. "
Love your book, blogs and videos. If I had a dime for every time I heard that myth of metabolism slowing down, I'd be rich. It just isn't true and you are correct. The majority use that as an excuse. You are also sooooo right, that people will do anything not to cut back calories! Preach on Man many of us are listening!
Hey Brad, I love your videos and am always looking forward to new ones. Whenever I tell someone about what I heard from you, nobody believes me, but let them believe whatever they want.
Couple of questions here:
1. What about the hormone leptin? I heard that you have to eat quite a bit once to keep loosing the fat.
2. If I have a big meal before a workout, do I still need to eat something afterwards or can I just go to bed? Won't I waste my workout?
@bigace321@bigace321 well, usually people who don't get results or who gain weight back DON'T post on youtube, do they? ;)
That's just another diet with a fancy name. And by now everyone knows DIETS DO NOT WORK, they're just temporary fixes. Eating only 500 calories a day for a prolonged period is simply not going to work... and add to that a daily injection of a sustance that is banned from professional sports...
@TheMaryTere say what u want but if a person needs to lose weight they need to eat less! Fasting ,water fasting, intermittent fasting! A person needs to eat less and this aint sports this is real life!
I have purchase your eat stop eat e-book and was wondering what time do YOU find is the best to start your fast ...after supper, after breakfast??Also do you start the 24 hrs after you take your last bite of your meal?Regards,
I would love it if a transcript was included in the email notifications you send out. It is much easier to read on the go verses watch on the go. Plus I read much faster than you speak. Thanks~!
so how do you recover your metabolism wtihout putting on fat?

@bradpilon I think she's missing the point that your "normal" metabolic rate decreases when you lose weight.
these gals were at the "new normal" after they had lost the weight.
