@KingScharfschutzE I don't think so. I think Villa-Lobos is an unknown composer abroad. Only some cellists know him because of this Bachianas, written for 8 cellos and soprano. But it shouldn't be mystified: Villa-Lobos is not a famous composer. In Brazil, at least between those who appreciate classical music know him, and his birthday is the official day of classical music. His attendance in Vargas government is also somewhat relevant in Brazilian History.

Yes cwldoc, you saw the point well! Actually it´s nostalgic, not exactly sad for brazilians, because it express something strange one feels looking to vast empty spaces of the BR hinterland, far from the coast (something every brazilian seems to like so much). Also the moon in the tropical climate of Brasil has something strangely mistic. It´s also a recurrent theme of many brazilian songs. Certainly it can sound sad...---KRegards

dear labacoc: Bidu Sayao certainly is the interpretation of reference, because she captured the feelings of Villa-Lobos entirely. The curious thing is that even being a brazilian who understood perfectly and deeply the feelings of this song, since she spent her whole life almost entirely out of Brasil (she lived and died in USA, New England) even Bydu have a very slight italian accent difficult to notice for non native speakers of BR portugues w good ear. I have a Long Play with this song performed by Kiri te Kanawa. I couldn't find it in YouTube. Her voice is also very good to sing this beautiful brazilian song. This version, by Barbara Hendricks is superb. No problem with her English accent when singing in Portuguese...the music itself is far more important than the words. I have to confess I can't understand even when sung by Brazilian sopranos. Although I'm Brazilian, the words seem for me very hard to understand...
