When I was about 16, Atari (in Hong Kong) hosted a workshop taught by Chris Crawford about how to program graphics on the Atari 400/800. I was into electronics and computers already, but taking Chris' workshop was ultimately what inspired me to make computer science my career. Now I have a PhD in CS, I work in the field of Virtual Reality, I get to teach classes in Video Game design, and I try to inspire the next-gen of students the way Chris inspired me.
When I was a kid, I saw "Balance of the Planet" by Mr. Crawford & bought it from a bargain bin. When I played it, I was in awe. I resolved to buy everything this man created & to read everything he wrote. He founded the Game Developers Conference (& then was cheated out of tonnes of money over it). This is his final GDC speech. VERY sorry to see him leave the game industry.
Having helped form the Games Industry he is now trying to form the Interactive Fiction industry. Good luck Chris.
Chris is super awesome. It's a tragedy that he left the video game industry. However, he's doing interactive storytelling now and it still looks like he's doing incredible work. Storytronics is the future of interactive storytelling.
Cant wait, going to see him give a speech in Mesa, AZ tomorrow! It will be AWESOME!

1.- CYOA
2.- A sports fan/player talking about an epic match
3.- Dungeons and Dragons/Vampire/any pen and paper RPG
4.- Taken part in Theatrical improvisation
5.- etc...
