  • Ive just bought an axe ultra last week so your videos have been such a pleasure to watch. However mine didnt come with a manual so ive been on the fractal website. So my question after watching this video is how do you get the modifier/envelope working? I used the same settings but my filter dosnt move, so im doing something wrong... In which menu do i get the envelope and how does it work with the filter? Hope you can help. Great videos by the way.

  • @minpinful - Do you understand that it is not supposed to sound even close to analog? This is a recreation of a sound from a digital effects unit, with a different digital effects unit. It is supposed to sound digital.

  • If the Axe FX has Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release there in lies the answer. You need to adjust them to closely follow the envelope of the guitars dynamics.

  • I added a Phaser after the filter and put a modifier on the Depth control in the shape of a smiley face - Start 91.7 / Mid 46.5 / End 100% - that seemed to add some grit and give more of the scooped sound.

I also got the Filter to close momentarily by changing the slope on the Q:

    Start 100

    Mid 65

    End 96.5

    Slope 93.3

The cutoff now becomes totally dependent on the THRESHOLD and ATTACK which will vary with your guitar. The RELEASE needs to be very fast.

  • @DownhillingGuitarist - Awesome. Glad you are experimenting. Post a clip?

  • Thought you might want to take a look at these youtube postings.

The Edge demonstrating his guitar rig (1/2)

The Edge soundchecks his guitar rig (It Might Get Loud)

The Edge Reveals His Guitar Secrets

After viewing them I realized how complex The Edge’s rig and sound is. If I were you, I’d count my lucky stars that; 1 – I could play Mysterious Ways and 2 – I only needed two effect processors to do so. Besides, it’s so soothing to stare into the bluelight of the Korg A3.

    Thanks 4 sharing,

  • Why didn't you just use the preset?

  • @LukeAir2008 - What do you mean? Which preset are you talking about?

  • wow fucking robot language I JUST WANT ULTIMATE DISTORTION NYAAARRGGG

  • @69stringibanez i lol'd pal:D:D

  • My filter doesnt move at all its on 9.03 ver.??

  • @Sickindian5 - Sounds like you haven't attached the envelope to the filter correctly.

  • @wildmorphlaw

    How do you do it?

  • @wildmorphlaw how do i atach it, and do i need a wha wha peddle?

  • @dushiemcbag - no, this patch doesn't use a pedal. just select envelope as the controller inside the Axe-fx. Check the fractal forum and look for the threads discussing how others have used this video.

  • Closest I've heard so far.

  • I think a big part of the sound on the A3 is the digital clipping, I dont have an Axe FX but if you can simulate this you may get closer to the sound you are after. Hope this helps.

  • Great stuff!

I tried your settings and it was very educational. Even posted the patch as attachment in the Axe forum. Most of these settings aren't very revealing anyway. Except for the filter, which is the ticket.

Somehow I didn't get the depth I think it should have, the low down swoosh, so I just added a second filter with similar settings. Hope that helps.

Haven't found a way to make it bounce back any faster. I guess we need to petition Cliff to get him to add that bit.

  • The filter\envelope is VERY sensitive and very guitar driven. You really need to fine tune the patch to your guitar. I tried the patch on my other 79 Strat, same settings, same model and year of guitar and it didn't sound right. So, just experiment and work with your equipment. As for the filter "bounce back," my guess is that the axe-fx will do it, but that I just don't know how.

  • I know. I did experiment. ;D A lot.

Maybe maezarr can shed some light. I know him from the Fractal forum. He's very into these things.

  • You may not have perfectly duplicated edge's sound, but I (I am not a u2 player) like this sound even more then the album version.

  • Thanks for posting this.

I play in a rock cover band. Quite helpful.

  • Allison, I do pro artist support for Fractal. Have your husband go to the fractal forum and look me up (username 'matman') I'll help him with any thing he needs there or on the phone.

  • This guy is the most respectable Edge sound emulator out there.

    Hollywood Bono

  • I got my husband this for Christmas . Is there anyway you can skype with him for a few questions ? We are thinking of sending it back if we cannot figure it out .

    Thanks

  • You ARE the best wife in the World!!!

If you have not had your questions answered, go to the forum. I would be happy to help.

  • He is happy with it but is really struggling We almost sent it back. Ill let him know you are open to helping or answering some questions. THANK YOU

  • I already know how to fish. The whole purpose of file x-fer is to not waste time making entries when one could be playing. Not trying to sound harsh, just saying...

  • If you really knew how to fish, you wouldn't need to watch my videos, or use axe-change. Not trying to sound harsh, just saying....

  • Just curious, are you having problems with uploading to the Axe-Change? Great patch, and that's what Axe-Change is for, sharing great patches like yours.

  • Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime... If people don't understand how the patch works, they can't improve it, or modify it to suit their setups, so I just do these videos.

  • Does this require an Axe-FX Ultra, or will a standard do? I have neither and I am trying to assess the risk in buying the Standard model.

  • This is the standard model. Check the Fractal Audio forum if you want good information re: buying the Standard v. Ultra. My experience tells me that the biggest "risk" people run into when buying the Axe-FX has nothing to do with the unit's capabilities, but rather that they don't know how to utilize those capabilities to get the sounds they want.

  • I hear you! However, for someone that does not have experience with the Axe-FX it is hard to assess the value in paying extra for the features in the Ultra model. Thanks for sharing.

  • spread the love

  • i think fractal audio should send a lab coat with each axe.fx - and officially declare it a science. when can i major in this at MIT? great work on your patch. im just lazy and turn on my crackling fizzing slowly dying of old age a3...

  • Great work on the patch -- I'm trying it on my Axe tonight. What, if any, effects do you have prior to the Filter effect in the chain? You don't show the left end (beginning) of the chain, so I am curious as to what you might have in the beginning.

  • No tricks here- no hiding the ball. Everything in the chain is shown. There is nothing before the filter block, except for a few shunts.

  • Please post another video like this when you think you have the correct settings. This song is one of the reasons I'm still holding up on selling my A3 to raise funds Axe Ultra. Great job btw.

  • interesting take on it- I was using the Wah with an envelope, I'm going to go back and try the filter this way...

  • What guitar and pickups do you use?

  • '79 Strat - all stock.

  • Are the modifier settings the same for Freq and Q?

Very good Video, thanks for sharing

  • No- much flatter. Just realized I didn't get a shot of that screen... Like this:

    Max: 70

    Mid: 50

    Low 40

    Good luck.

  • Where is this page?

  • If you are talking about the envelope settings...hit the control button and page over

  • Very cool video. Very helpful for Axe FX users.

Over of any of the Axe FX users have contatcted Fractal Audio to ask about the filter return 'issue'?

Maybe FA will listen to those asking about this and will work on the 'issue'?

  • I don't think it is an issue with the Axe-fx. The envelope works as it should, it is just not working like the one in the A3. The problem is that I don't know how to make the axe-fx do what I want it to do. I'm sure that the unit is capable of it, it just takes a level of skill with the unit that I do not yet have.

  • I agree with everything you say, thank you for sharing this if only more people followed ure example.

  • THANK YOU, IT´s so diffiult to get that tone, you do for us, thanks
