3:05 hommage to king crimson (larks tongues in aspic pt 3). good to see how great bands inspire new great bands: king crimson --> tool --> meshuggah --> dilliger... well and kc also inspired the mars volta... and they're ALL still active, including kc, imagine seeing them all on one single festival... !!!!
dissonance and harmony two one words for one thing, are these good musicians or bad musicians, are these creators or destroyers... nothing exists as well as everything, energy cannot be created or destroyed its created and destroyed, the future will resemble the past but in all certainty it will not be the past, whos the best and who knows that noone is better than you. anyway thats what i get from these guys
I think The Dillinger Escape Plan is easier to listen to. probably because i've listened to each song they've made WAY to many times so i understand the time signatures, but i guess it's mainly because of my short attention span.
Meshuggah blows me away in a different way though, i still remember listening to catch 33 and being like "damn this is a long ass first song" looked at my itunes and i was on the 4th song >__>
both are amazing. somewhat similar, but very different at the same time.
Seriously, why bitch about what band is better? Like some of you said, they are two totally different bands, both on cd and live. And eventhough DEP got inspired by Meshuggah, they ddid something different with it!
Both bands are great and I will listen to the band that suits my mood the most. I refuse to even think about which of the bands is better. I hope they both will continue for a very long time!
IMO, Meshuggah is more brutal than DEP, exept C.I. album, that's the most brutal album ever... but I guess the're right, it's stupid to compare these two bands, they both are great in the're own way.
yeah i know that part. just interested in what he'S doing now. he's one talented motherfucker. it would be sad if he just vanished from the metal scene. and miss his drumming in Dillinger too.
awesome video with really cool interviews. really too bad dillinger is dead now that pennie left though. i mean could you imagine haak or thordendal leaving meshuggah? sigh..
I don't understand this idea of 'getting/not getting' music. It implies that there is a correct way to hear it. Crazy. I'm sure both bands would hate the idea of only playing to other musicians or those who understand rhythmic structure in an academic way.
Well there are different ways to listen to music. For instance, I barely ever listen to what the vocalist is actually saying. I just listen to what they sound like, since I can't understand them on a first listen. When I'm listening to Meshuggah, I could take the whole thing at once, or I could actually pay attention to the differentiations within the rhythms. As a drummer, doing the latter makes me really appreciate the band more. But there's no right or wrong way to listen. Just different.
The day I started playing bass and guitar myself it changed the way I look to music completely. You can never but really never again listen to music the way you did before you played it yourself. So there are indeed different ways to see/understand music.
"When you find yourself listening to a tune and you're unsure of whether you're listening to a Meshuggah track or a DEP track, you can then compare the two."
They are so unmistakably different from each other that it's incredibly difficult to find anything to compare them with each other. If that makes sense.
Eg, as soon as you hear that angry Thordendal low F djentage, the crazy wall of YARR that mr Kidman generates and the tight polyrhythms of Haake that give you a brain injury trying to count along, you auto know it's Mushuggah.
Just like when you hear that fucking whacked out slap bass riff with what sounds like a hillbilly spitting a tale over the top of it, you've got yourself some Primus.
Bands like these can't be compared with anything else...
None is the better. It's 2 totally different bands, playing totally different music. I love them both, I prefer meshuggah for the awesome frackaheavyliciousness, but at the same time I prefer Dillinger for their extreme crazyness. Meshuggah's heavy, Dillinger's hard!
I think the dillinger have got very good energy on stage and are great technically! Im more of a Meshuggah guy myself because no one has never heard anything like meshuggah! but i think they are both good in their own ways!
How I miss Chris. While Gil Sharone wasn´t a bad drummer, he seemed to have a habit of speeding up their songs live, something that Chris really seemed to have under control most of the time.
chris has had years of practice and familiarity with the tracks, im sure gil works better with any tracks that he specifically wrote drumt racks for on ire works
Meshuggah is 50 times better. with albums like Contradictions Collapse, Destroy Erase Improve, Chaosphere, Nothing, I, Catch 33 and obZen...its pretty a no brainer whos the better band. but I do respect DEP and they are a pretty good band.
Both are good bands. But, being objective, they don`t even compete in the same league. Meshuggah is a completely diferent thing.
And for me, all the "Core" or hardcore movement isn`t Heavy Metal. They have similarities, but Heavy Metal (in my opinion) is far above from that kind of genres.
If yo ask me, Meshuggah is one of the 10 best bands of all Heavy Metal history.
"And for me, all the "Core" or hardcore movement isn`t Heavy Metal. They have similarities, but Heavy Metal (in my opinion) is far above from that kind of genres"
What you like is an opinion but that comment is based in more bias then fact. There are various kinds of metal but just because they all rn't the same dosen't make one less valid as a form of metal.
Does the common held idea of heavy metal today sound like the experimentation of Zepplins early metal stuff. No but yet people seem to fix there ideas of what metal and base it on limits of taste. And Meshugga isn't straight heavy metal themselves much like DEP. It's a mixture based on there experimentation with metal. Metal is metal regardless of what you prefer or don't. Those "simularities" are an indication of what they are.
Meshuggah couldn't look silly if they dyed their hair, got it braided, and started playing daisy rock guitars. I haven't listened to enough Dillinger to have an opinion but I think Meshuggah is amazing. Of course their live show does seem to lack the insane amount of energy that Dillinger has. It has a more "Creeping Doom" feel too it than the "unbridled rage" that Dillinger has.
i have listened to DEP many times over two years and i still put forth that DEP does not ever approach equality with meshuggah, has always played noise, and jens is not making a compliment when he tells ben that his band is insane. he doesn't appear pleased to be spoken for and his tone seems to indicate irritation. i won't rant but DEP makes about as much sense as microsoft windows on the playstation 3 being used for high performance applications. i could be wrong, but thats just me.
I just got back to youtube after taking apart my computer to find out how it worked and several other completely different activities with my time. After over a year I return to find this video's comments much as I had left them. Haven't missed a thing. Except perhaps the the hilarious response to a rebuttal of my argument questioning who it was directed at after noticing I had long ago stopped responding. It was indeed argument for the sake of argument.
it is to this day still incredibly amusing to listen this video while reading the responses to my comments, knowing i had no direction with my "argument" and just fanned the flames as they came. such a delight is the subtle art of manipulation that i had to comeback and continue the nonsense. who now will humiliate themselves in argument with me? i'll begin the fun with more bias than ever before.
i must point out the absurdity of a member of DEP speaking for jens kidman on meshugah's approach to songwriting, and would contend this equal to blasphemy and deserving of the blunt and honest difference between the two being spoken by jens as a grand entrance to the conversation that should have started and ended without ben weinman or DEP having any place to compare the two bands or speak at all.
"The people that come, can come [to shows], it's not our job to figure out why" if that was the only part of the interview that I saw of this clip that would have been enough.
i´m very sorry. but it seems like i´m not really the only one who wasn´t able to recognize your "sarcasm" .... it sounded just like "someone once said cannibal corpse fans are stupid like bricks .... i agree" ... where is the sarcasm ?
what sucks is that their talking about the ignorant concert goers who dont know crap about music-the same kind that bood the mars volta of the stage and threw piss at them
no musician should have to oay for ignorance that way...Meshuggah is great though
Meshuggah are gods.....im still working on understanding DEP, they go from sounding great to sounding like pure sh$t......but the attitude is what binds us all toghether.
as do i (i'm not one for standing still on stage) but there's no way you can swing perfectly in 13/8 time then change back from 5/4 to 7/8 whislt rattling your brain as they do
its not quite a talkbox. its a tone controller that you use with your breath. i heard tomas haake's brother made it just for fred, but i dont think he made more. its mad sweet though.
I hate the whole 'quote your favorite video part' b/c you just watched the fucking thing, but, "you're band is fucking insane!"...heh heh...that's purty spiffy.
Are you kidding? Fall Out Boy is NOT complex OR creative, and nowhere near as fucking heavy as either of these bands!! Take it from a guitar player: Emo/pop-punk bands suck in general and can't even touch these guys. I can't even believe this. I hope you cry when you read this and your eyeliner runs. Gotta give you credit though, for having a Mastodon video on your profile.
Is this guy serious?? fall out boy should not even be thought of in the presence of meshuggah. Anyone comparing fall out boy to meshuggah has no idea what he is talking about
both bands are humongously good.

Both AMAZING bands. I saw DEP for the first time in Yeovil on the 21st Feb....INTENSE is putting it mildly lol.

Both these bands are amazing. You can only really see their similarities if you try learning some of their songs. I love it!!

Meshuggah are gods.....im still working on understanding DEP, they go from sounding great to sounding like pure sh$t......but the attitude is what binds us all toghether.
mirageus 4 years ago
I don't think DEP waves their guitars around enough. xD Sorry, that just looks hilarious.
But yeah, they're too different to really compare. Apples and pencils; doesn't work.
MorbusMactabilis 4 years ago
have you tried playing one of their songs just sitting in a chair?!
it's hard as fuck.
now, try that while flying to the moon on your guitar...
as crazy as it looks, it's hard to even think of doing with their time changes, and rhythmic diversity.
personally, i salute them.

Actually I find the swimgs help keep in time. As weird as it maybe.
Markzyisme 4 years ago
as do i (i'm not one for standing still on stage) but there's no way you can swing perfectly in 13/8 time then change back from 5/4 to 7/8 whislt rattling your brain as they do
deftonesordie 4 years ago
dep aint got shit on meshuggah!!
But thats just my opinion..
moshovitis84 4 years ago
closed eye visuals sounded fucking sweet. was ballsy as a motherfucker

i don't know why some folks keep comparing DEP with meshuggah. Some comparisons are just incorrect
brunobliss 4 years ago
that was pretty funny when the singer was bashing DEP

I've heard Future Breed Machine 1000 times and I just got shivers. That is seriously the heaviest shit.

It's nice to see sweeping generalisations and misinformed bigotry are still alive and well on the internet.
GarethFlatlands 4 years ago
i just wonder if any of the a-holes posting "this band is better than that one" comments have ever sat down and learned any of their songs

What is that device that Fredrick uses with his mouth? If someone can reply to me I would like details pls :)
junkyarddrummer 4 years ago
It's a talkbox, you blow/talk into it which connects to a device which is in the effects chain of your guitar.
hnlzero 4 years ago
Never heard of a thing like that.Cool! Fredrick is a veteran already :) Thanks a lot for the information :)
junkyarddrummer 4 years ago
its not quite a talkbox. its a tone controller that you use with your breath. i heard tomas haake's brother made it just for fred, but i dont think he made more. its mad sweet though.

toddyhoward 4 years ago
Are you kidding? Fall Out Boy is NOT complex OR creative, and nowhere near as fucking heavy as either of these bands!! Take it from a guitar player: Emo/pop-punk bands suck in general and can't even touch these guys. I can't even believe this. I hope you cry when you read this and your eyeliner runs. Gotta give you credit though, for having a Mastodon video on your profile.
strawpaperwindowman 4 years ago
Is this guy serious?? fall out boy should not even be thought of in the presence of meshuggah. Anyone comparing fall out boy to meshuggah has no idea what he is talking about
bloodletting260 4 years ago
anyone comparing fall out boy to ANYTHING has no idea what he is talking about, they fucking suck, and are pure garbage, end of story.
supermun2 4 years ago
did you just compare fall out boy to garbage? by your own logic do you have no idea what you are talking about?
