I do hope all these people showing feral kitten videos are also doing TNR. If you can get this close to a feral they need fixed, vetted, chipped and managed or socialized. Each unfixed cat can have up to 500 downline relatives in two or three years!!! That's a lot of unwanted, starving animals. Please also get YOUR pet fixed just in case it gets lost. Thank you for helping these animals.
I agree with beauannie about the TNR practice. I do that. But, I disagree about not getting involved with ferals. Feral cats deserve love just any other living being. Feeding them isn't recommended unless you practice TNR, but, as in ur case, Edie is now safe and happy. That is very happy ending if u ask me. JMHO
U can always adopt them out if you find an organization to help you. Apparently Edie wasn't full-blown feral. She may be an abandoned cat turned feral thru no fault of her own.
she was my girlfriend's (at the time) cat. We named her Edie, after Edie Sedgwick in the movie Factory Girl. In the summer of 2008 my girlfriend moved to San Francisco, and Edie went to go stay with her parents in Corpus Christi, TX, where she's now pampered by by my ex's mom.
I can appreciate the fact that you took this kitten in... and cared for it. "taming" him is not necessary, he was born wild... but, since you have already exosed him to human intervention, you cannot stop there. There are organizations that will provide traps, s/n and advice.
Please look into TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release). If you aren't practicing it.. you should not become any more involved with ferals, they will continue to breed and your involvement will not be a kindness to them.
What I am about to write sounds cruel, but I have starved some stray/feral kittens into submission. I put food in a dish on a towel and sat nearby and made the kitten come to the food with me sitting next to it. After a week or 2 depending on the kitten, I give a gentle pat and after a couple of weeks of doing this, the kitten has started the knowing and trust process with you. The best part is after a month they roll on their backs and want their full bellies rubbed and purring like crazy.
What you did is probably the only approach to domesticating the cats. I would like to extend a thank you for saving the cats lives. Everyone and everything deserves a change to live and prosper.
Not really, it's all about survival and striving towards perfection.. perfecting in this generation what was wrong with the last one.. that was ofcourse until we fucked it up.
Um... Nature is unpredictable, say what you like, but there is a lot about this world we will never understand. Nothing can ever be perfect and that is what makes Nature.... Nature....
You can say what ever you want depending where you, given that you have free speech.. but the real point is, you don't know. We will never understand? How often has someone said that about something? Most people don't understand the theory of evolution even today, about 200 years after it's creation and some just don't believe it because it's "too simple".. Nor do they understand Quantum Physics or Nuclear Physics or anything complex that is.. But by studying science you can come very close :)
mtp0202. that is the best way to earn their trust. If they recognize you as a food provider and that you pose no threat, they will...no pun intended...feed on that. When I got my feral kitten, her mother was a haggard stray. After time the mother became comfortable around my family by using the same tactics that you used. As for the kittens, they got use to us at a young age just by association. My cat still goes feral but only when threaten/scarred. One of the best cats I've had to be honest.
my sisters boyfriend found a kitten like that out in the wild and she didnt go crazy or anything. She loved being around people and if she wasnt she would meow like crazy. Same way with a little five week old we had. I was like her mother almost and she wouldnt leave me alone. How cute
i used to catch those little bastards on the farm, they can really mess up your hands, they go bazerk, but after a day or two they calm down. we found one in a barn once who's mother had died and the others froze to death. we were able to get one of the domestic mothers who just had kittens to take him in as one of hers. its was pretty amazing. just wish id know about that litter sooner. :( but somthing good came out of it.
she is now my girlfriend's cat, and she is so lovable. she's a talker so she's always meowing about this and that and loves to be pampered. my girlfriend baby's and spoils her. she's a good cat.
@toonstar02 Before I knew what feral meant I took in 2 VERY feral cats and let them loose in our closet. I eventually got the neutered and released (miracle, yes). When I went to catch them one time I really geared up, heavy coat, pants, gloves, but I 4got my head. Guess where he got me? No permanent damage (some may disagree) :)
I was planning TNR for a tom cat where I lived who had a large tumor in his ear (benign) I caught him, hot a kitty harness on him and got him so he would let me hold him (w/o freaking out) for a week then I took him to the vet. He actually did pretty well.
I caught him 3 more times afterwards just to see how he was doing. The day before X-mas he shows up on my back porch, scared, but begging. After 2 weeks he let me pet him and feed him w/o fear. He now has a good home, as is a baby!
Usually at that age they are far from help with the ones on the MDCC Campus. But some have hope in domestication. I see that it may be under a confused part now, one moment it was sweet, next it paniced and cried for momma, then at the last moment it hissed.
Quite a normal reaction. Hope to hear updates on this one.
