  • I'm pretty sure that you just saved my parents like 200 dollars a week on a tutor. Thanks bro.

  • Thanks for the vid!!! You helped me score an A on my chem test, and now your helping me with anatomy! honestly you explain everything in a clear and slow manner, and i believe your ways of teaching is very affective. THanks again

  • It’s amazing to think that just a 3-billion in number amount of information – 01231032… – can describe everything about what we are. Literally just information, which is tantamount to saying literally just math, can describe everything that makes us, us. This, to me, is far profounder than being created out of dust, or a clot of blood, or by any other means purported by any other creation myth.

  • PLEASE DO A VIDEO ON PROTEIN SYNTHESIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • like a boss!

  • Sal you are a legend!!! Do you know something about everything? I have watched your videos for chemistry, biology & physics!! Thank you so much. I couldn't have passed my courses without you :)

  • This sentence doesnt make sense. it is found at 21:34. All the genes dont make proteins but all the proteins are made by genes? I dont understand this.

  • @HaloReachGravHammer Lemme see if i can help... What he probably means is that within DNA not every single gene sequence will code for proteins(amino chains) but every protein that is within our body is made from genes

  • @HaloReachGravHammer He's just saying that not ALL genes make proteins, but ALL proteins are made by genes.

  • @HaloReachGravHammer proteins are made by genes, but some genes don't code at all, some are non coding areas of DNA. So you may need 5 genes to code for a polypeptide chain,, but in-between you will have sections that don't code for anything

  • @15:40 those sets of 3 bases on the tRNA are anticodons, right?

  • This is a truely amazing piece of work put together into this video... I'm attending a sort of high-school with the branch-specification bionics. I'm doing a introductery project about DNA and genes and this has absolutely gotten me into this! Thanks so much! Love from Austria! :)

  • HOLY SHIT! I GET IT NOW!

  • 08:42 it's a Palindrom

  • hiiiii

  • i lol when he stutters

  • you teach better than my biology teacher..i literally just watch all your videos before my tests and it helps more than enough.. thank you <3

  • amazing!!!!

  • u r just awesome,sir!!!!

  • Thanks soooooo much for a great video ! I have tried for such a long time to understand what the difference between alleles and genes was, and if it coded for other proteins or what ever ! Finally i get the idea and concept behind this !

  • Thanks for helping a non-scientist to start to understand a very interesting subject. Now I can persevere with reading Life's Solution by Simon Conway Morris!

  • Dude, you made it totally clear to me in half an hour and I got the highest mark in class while my teacher apperently took 7(!) weeks to deal with this... And still no-one knew what she was on about...

    Thanks!

    From the netherlands ;)

  • Made the second highest score on the biology semester exam, couldn't have done it with out you.

  • It's funny how he easily gets distracted with all the side information. Great video, though!

  • hoolly fuuck

  • 7:33 a.a.a.a.

  • hahahaha man i love you

  • I just saved 350 dollars plus a 400 dollar book on a class to learn about DNA! Welcome to the future.

  • I love this. Im in a very hard bio class as a freshman. We go into greater detail but this really put everything together for me. THANK YOU

  • I thought this vid was about but the top comment is about religion. LOL.

  • 2:24 "if you have something good to say, it shouldn't take you that long to say it..."

*looks at the video length, 28 minutes... -_-

  • @FitnessWithTroy I think as far as explaining DNA, 30 minutes is pretty good.

  • @padlockd lol i know, i was kidding

  • @FitnessWithTroy at least say Thanks ^__^ !

  • @FitnessWithTroy

Well, he didn't just say something good he told you a bunch of smart things ;)

  • I'm glad I found this, it'll make this next unit in Biology so much easier :'D

  • I was reading the updated version of 'The Origin of Species' by Steve Jones and he said that the Fruit Fly were prone to variation and mutation more so that other species. Is this because of their large number of base pairs? So the more larger the dna the more probability there is of genetic reshuffles occuring?

  • Late show

  • You are a great teacher, definitely gifted. Most people are able to explain things so that only people who already understand it can follow but you know how to make it translate to those of us learning.

  • Comment removed

  • I am (trying) to learn this in Biology class right now. Now I understand. Thanks!

  • SubhanAllah (Glory be to God) only Allah could have created something so intricate and complicated!

  • @pinkrose101s

It's not complicated when you understand it.

  • @pinkrose101s allah sucks

  • I have a question, I have been wondering what happens to Uracil and have not been able to find a good answer that I am able to understand. Does uracil cause the mRNA to translate into protein, and is uracil ever changed back into thymine after the molecule is a protein? Thank you.

  • excellent teaching... thanks khanA

  • and yes i'm completely aware of my unnecessary use of comma splices before the word and as well as my misuse of the word, "better". I'm a physicist not a writer.

  • it really pisses me off when people act like they're better than other people because of their ability to speak and write a language better than other people. If you have no better ideas than them, and the only thing you can feel superior about is your grammar, then maybe they're smarter than you. It's a big world, lots of languages. If we can't get ideas across language barriers, and are too arrogant to accept other people's ideas despite their lack of periods, then America's going to crash.

  • they hold Stoutishpayloads

  • WTF... this is science and religion has nothing to do with this...it's like as if you're talking about a shoe and then a fruit or sth...religion may wanna answer fer questions but that is juz bullshit..the real answer is here *science*

    stupid

  • CAN you please do a video on protein synthesis with mrna, trna, and rrna??? pLEASE?

  • my teacher sent me here. im glad she did to because i actually get it:) thanks

  • Great lecture. Thank you, Mr.Sal.

  • BTW! you are amazing mashallah you are incredibly talented :)

  • Salman! You should make history videos! and English videos such as on books and interpretation! HISTORY! would help a lot! i love the subject!

  • This is AMAZING

  • i needed this i was soooooooooooooo lost

  • thanks a lot

  • Comment removed

  • Yo dawg i heard you like viruses so we put their dna in your dna so you can transcribe them while you translate you!

  • i actually get transcription after two years!! ( yr 12 and first yr science!)

  • Wonderful video. I wonder if you could do one more detailed, like describing the actual protein synthesis, with all of the different types of RNA and enzymes and stuff like that. Or maybe some recent things such as gene repression, pseudo genes, etc.

  • In the end of this video when you talk about all life on the planet having the commonality of DNA is why sadly I can't imagine the universe flourishing with life. In other words, if life "happens" so readily, by now we would have found more than one example of life on this planet's 4+ billion year history. If life can take place in the so-called Goldilocks Zone as stated by many biologists, why haven't we found more than one example? Just makes life the more special and profoundly bizarre

  • @HigherPlanes we have but it's been supresseed

  • @ploy3snoy Ha! I forgot about that possibility.

  • i am in love. you guys are geniuses and i wish i had yall's brain lol thank you so much, this helps alot!

  • You have a degree in Maths and CS. You are not supposed to know so much about Biology.

  • @ritesh024 What is CS? Communication? I also wonder how this guy knows so much! He's covered virtually every scientific subject: Chemistry, Physics, Math, Biology, he's covered it! I wish this guy would give a bit of backround regarding his education because he's extremely bright!

  • @ritesh024

The basis of your statement is far from logical. If you imply one can only master a subject in which they have a degree, you have a lot of reading to do, particularly in history. People liked your comment only because you praised Sal in an unusual way.

Like my comment if you agree!!

  • @ritesh024 THATS RIGHT WOAH FACK A RUNE

  • "for those of you who lile to.....lift weights"

  • Intense. This helped me a lot; thank you!

  • 2:17

The irony being that this is Khan's longest video.

  • how can some 1 dislike this video

he is giving away free tutoring

  • The LORD watches Khan

  • @armyofchrist100

    ^^^^Religion pigeon

Doesn't understand science lesson on DNA

    Quotes bible verse.

  • @armyofchrist100 Please leave with your religious nonsensical drivel.

  • thank uuuuuuuuuuu finally i understand what allele means exactly

  • mind = blown

  • your video explanation is a great help for me, although i learned this during my high school, i have trouble in explaining this to my students for now by just reading some textbooks... it's my first year of teaching and i don't want that my students will fail to understand the lesson... their failure reflects mine... thank you so much... how i wish you also have video lesson in Physics...

  • 7 people hate... oh wait, I'm not an asshole

  • @someonetoogoodforyou Thank you! so tired of that shit

  • i love those names!

  • @excsa62 humble too..... jerk

  • @excsa62 this is rather insulting :(

  • @excsa62 Khan has never revealed what his personal faith is. So you're wrong.

  • @excsa62 I am Muslim too, but unlike you I actually follow what Islam says and am HUMBLE and don't show arrogance. Many Christians, Muslims, many people of many different religions are smart. You're a jerk.

  • @MonaRocks09 Lol yup!

  • @MonaRocks09 Not as any as you would think in the Arab world. People who are intelligent and had the misfortune of being indoctrinated into Islam stop following that dumbass religion and move to somewhere civilized.

  • @klm4298 Please don't speak of intelligence when you can't even form a proper sentence. Get the fuck out.

  • @MonaRocks09 No, I'll think I'll stay. It's quite an interesting video and I hadn't finished it in my first sitting. What was wrong with my comment? My grammar may not be perfect but there was nothing major wrong with it and everything was spelled right. The Muslim religion is disgusting and immoral along with most organised religions. Maybe you don't realize this because you're an American and they don't teach what's really in religious texts in western countries.

  • @klm4298 chill out lmao

  • @flamesword321 I didn't express any anger in either of my comments.

  • @klm4298 LOL whatever dude, some illiterate person on the internet isn't worth my time, get a life, keep replying...which I know you will since you have nothing better to do...but I am done. Enjoy yourself

  • @MonaRocks09 umad bro?

  • @excsa62 How do you know he's a muslim? I think he's way too smart to follow any religion.

  • @excsa62 Is that what Islam taught you? Intolerance? And you are proud of that?

  • Mr Khan has saved my butt so many times with his videos, can never thank him enough. THANK YOU GOOD SIR! God bless you and your family.

  • fml i should just become an english major

  • Thanks so much for this! I am in year 12 and because of illnees I've only been to about three bio classes this term and exams are next week! This is a life saver :)

  • I just wanted to thank you, I have a Intregrated Science test for college and when i noticed portions of DNA (which i had no clue about) I searched youtube and found this presentation, Very good and valid information. P.S. Im going to college for a BBS Human Resources Management (Why I have to know about DNA I have no idea of). Thanks again, I have watched this video twice and your presented it so well im sure its stuck in my head until the test!

  • wow...a lot of smart people spend 100 of dollars on expencive presentation software

    not you...you use paint :D

  • Awesome !

  • This guy is utterly negronious. I love it.

  • YOU ARE UNBELIEVABLY AWESOME!

  • like it

  • "if you have anything good to say, it shouldn't take you that long to say it" - can you please say that to my english teacher?

  • So much knowledge packed into such a short video. This is why Khan Academy is such a great place to learn.

  • It would be good if you could also talk about the different mutations that can occur during the replication process and what what causes these mutations. But this was a really great video and it helped me a lot, thank you.

  • this channel is the BEST, I really, really like this

  • WAit so it's almost like DNA is alive or something... weird. What propels DNA to be transcribed into MRNA? How does it know what to do? I'm so full of QUESTIONS hahaha

  • You're so freakin smart!

  • this is a fantastic video and all and i love sal he has taught me all of my math videos to but if he said that he got all of this info on wikipedia then why do you have to watch this video?? dont get me wrong sal is a great teacher and he is a great role model to me but if he said that he got all of this info on wikipedia then i suggest that you go there

  • I found this by searching for bref dna saenihp

  • The excellent lessons by Khan would be even more awesome if they included computer graphics like in this YouTube video: /watch?v=4PKjF7OumYo

  • this is by far the most simplified version of something so difficult..thank you soo much

  • wikipedia isn't accurate -.-

  • @1000theoperasinger You have no idea how much I appreciate hearing that. It bug's me SO MUCH when people reference Wikipedia as an academic source. In this context, I have no issue with pictures from Wikipedia, just the information written on there.

  • I could almost see David's star in the centre of the last enzyme on the right.

  • What about "Junk" DNA?

  • Do you know how long I have been trying to understand this! You are awesome! You should win a Nobel peace prize because your videos help peeps make peace with their scalps... you know from all the scratching and hair pulling from trying to understand stuff...!!! Really, you are doing the world a service! Thanks so much! I can only hope I can contribute as much through my volunteer work!

  • how can you write so neatly

    ?

and btw wats a strand of dna?

  • Thumbs up if you thought of the AUG gun when you saw the anticodon

  • @Ibahz Me too! It was inevitable

  • "We all have DNA, as different as that roach that I might not like to be in the same room with" - hahah

  • Comment removed

  • I think we all love you

  • I got lost after the amino-acids... :(

  • thks!

  • I totally get it with a few repeats of some parts...Thank you!!!!

  • jealous mutants

  • Hey khan, i know you get a lot of messages on youtube and you probably don't read them all, but, if you do read this, can u make a more complex version of DNA structure and all?

  • Khan, you forget about gene separator

  • thank you.

  • why cant u be my teacher :[ ?

  • i am going ever where i can warning others about doctors that care little if any about their patients and what we went throw because of to of these doctors

  • I always love your videos! However, I am concerned about your over simplification of the process of Translation. You did not include a ribosome at all in the process, and made it seem as though the tRNAs line up next to each other on the mRNA strand, causing the polypeptide to form, which is not quite how it truly happens.

  • @camronjstanley I think what he has here is a pretty good start. For an introduction to translation, I would not want to overwhelm students with concepts like the peptidyl-tRNA binding site and the aminoacyl-tRNA complex binding site. I think the particulars of any concept are always easier to understand once you've got a basic understanding of that concept.

  • I always love your videos! However, I am concerned about your over simplification of the process of Translation. You did not include a ribosome at all in the process, and made it seem as though the tRNAs line up next to each other on the mRNA strand, causing the polypeptide to form, which is not quite how it truly happens.

  • AP exam for me tomorrow, hopefully this will save me =)

  • I'm still waiting for a logical explanation on how DNA and an RNA Polymerase ribosome exist and function coherently through evolution......... Can ANYBODY explain it??

  • @silentonall logic and evolution dont really go together mate

  • @silentonall and H20z1 "I can't think of how two particular kinds of molecules might have come about to be the language of life, and none of the entry-level biology students who are watching this video will tell me, so all life must have been created by a trans-dimensional, omnipotent, omniscient intelligence who somehow couldn't create a system of life that wasn't laughably inefficient and cumbersome." Nice "logic." Really, though, wikipedia has like four plausible theories on abiogenesis.

  • @silentonall Read a book

  • This is, without any doubt, the BEST and most useful channel on youtube. EVERYONE should be subscribed to you, and everyone should watch your videos...these are the types of video that should be "most viewed" on youtube. Its just amazing how easy it is to learn stuff from you... what i would learn in 1-2 hours from a book, i learn in 20 mins from one of your videos. Excellent! Thank you so much!

  • Your videos are so helpful!! My teacher knows what he's talking about, he just doesn't know how to teach it and therefore I don't understand But in your videos i do. Thanks! :)

  • Forget the university, if anyone told me he had watched all of this guys videos, I'd hire him before he could say deoxyribonuclein.

  • omg... I cannot learn from anyone besides you, I am bout to cry, thank you so much!

  • thank you so much.

  • thaks billions sal u are the best

  • Traditionally there are 20 amino acids (imagine 20 alphabetical letters) and from these amino acids when combined in a specific sequence they make different kinds of proteins, such as when letters are combined they make different kinds of words. Lately however, there has been introduced 2 more amino acids to the amino acid family, which makes it 22.However, the universal amino acids found in proteins are 20, the rest are either found in eukaryotes or prokaryotes or may be nonproteinogenic.

  • If you have something good to say, it takes exactly 28:05 minutes to say it...

  • Please help me clarify a question :

when mRNA and other proteins can come out through the nuclear pore and many nuclear specific protein can enter from cytosol to nucleus then why DNA can not come out of nuclear pore?

  • @malaytri1 I think its because DNA doesnt have to come out of the nucleus, instead it just "makes" a "copy" of itself.

  • If mRNA attaches itself to the DNA, what is RNA?!?!?!?!

  • very helpful (: Thanks

  • Khan i think you should make a video for Digestive System, thank you for your great videos
