Before Buddy pasted away he started playing any drums or cymbals that suited his fancy. The kit is a restored Radio King kit with 26" kick drum by the guy who owns the Eames drum company. I guess he like that Paiste ride cymbal ... its sounds sweet to me ... is it a Formula 602? Also Buddy always played what he wanted remember the Fibes snare drum on the cover of one of his 70's albums when he was a Slingerland endorser.
When I was a kid living in California I saw him perform live many times at Disneyland. He was the greatest inspiration. We still love you Buddy. Check out my tributes to him on here (a few short drum solos of mine). To all the rock drummers out there, don’t lose touch with the past. There are many things to learn from the rich heritage all those jazz drummers left us “back in the day”. Richard Gray
After some thought, it appears Buddy was urged to come out for an encore, even though he'd removed his sweat-soaked clothes. He appeared tired, breathy, and needed a drink of water, but he was willing to play "one more time..." and honor his recently departed friend, Count Basie. A class act even in a robe...
Basie died in April of 1984, so this must be shortly thereafter. I remember a story about Buddy getting to a job, but his luggage did not and he had to play out of "uniform" - not sure if this is the gig.
Plays the Hi-hats with such grace, time and feel...the best big band drummer, knows when to play only for the band...check him out with Harry's band back in 64...whole other style.
How many of you cahnz know who the bas player is huh?
-It's Dave Carpenter -look him up. RIP

I'm assuming this concert was sometime in 1984 (I guess right after Basie's death, in late April of that year).

What year was this? Seems to be around 1982 or so. I wonder what the story is regarding playing in a bathrobe.
