  • Rickenbacker all the way

  • CORRECTION... Geddy used his '72 Jazz on this track. I agree that it does sound like a Ric, but, using the right gear like I do with my Geddy Jazz, I can get that same Ric-sound. He also used the Jazz on Tom Sawyer, YYZ, and Vital signs from the Moving Pictures album. He used a Ric on the rest of the tracks.

  • I only have to learn 1 more minute of the song-3 then hopefully I'll do a cover :D

  • heavy compression...like 5:1 and 10ms attack, 250ms release...holy fuck

  • you can hear his mistakes in the solo and where he "punched" in to try to fix it...way cool.

  • The bass is WAY too under-appreciated

  • Do I hear Entwistle influence in his sound and playing?

  • @GVike More than likely.

  • Mistake. It can only be the Rick bass...sounds kinda Chris Squire so it makes sense to me..Miced cab..fet47/SSL pre/1176 comp/pultec eqp1a/..ehhh..to TAPE.Hurray for tape.20 years from now no computer recorded/ protools record will be recalled because the old sessions wont boot on a new computer and popular music today lacks the shelf life and musicianship of bands like Rush or the Police

  • @CmathTV yup this is a ricky, very distinctive tone eh?

  • @CmathTV

right, doesn't sound like a fender jazz bass, the crunchy tone is too clean and well controlled, it doesn't "blat" on the low notes like fender basses often do - nice sound - wonder why Lee switched to Fender -

  • 3 people don't have the capacity to hear this awesomeness

  • @Esperant3 three persons :)

  • Thanks

  • My guess here...Rick Bass>amp>FETU47mic>SSL4000Console Preamp/EQ>1176 compressor>Pultec EQP-1a EQ> Studer tape machine.No D.I.

  • how do u get the bass track to be turned up?

  • 1:29 can someone tab this part? It's a variation of the bass riff

  • I read an interview once where he says that this song is "pure Ricky" and that in fact, TS is the first one the JB is played on.

Being an owner of one of each, this guitar distorts like my 4003S.

  • I read an interview once where he says that this song is "pure Ricky" and that in fact, TS is the first one the JB is played on.

  • Geddy Lee is very crazy, in the studio Tom Sawyer is with the Jazz, but in the music video is a Rickenbacker, the same happens with limelight

  • @Shadic159 For the music videos Geddy played the exact opposite bass that he used to record each song on Moving Pictures, except for the Vital Signs video.

  • @1325ACO yeah, i know it

  • Geddy is actually using his Jazz bass in this song. You can watch the official video, he is using his jazz.

  • one question is this the J-bass or the RIC?

  • How can there be 2 dislikes? Were those by accident?

  • Geddy is rocking ! Listen to the bass pulsing, roaring and breathing fire ! Damn !

  • This isn't Geddy, but certainly a good approximation of his lines on Limelight. If you listen closely to the recording Moving Pictures there are some different fills and stuff used, but I like this one too. And it has more of Geddy's modern heavy sound. Nice!

  • @ledboots2112 sorry, but your wrong! The absolutely IS Geddy's actual bass track from the song.

  • Rickenbacker no doubt! :D

  • No better rock bass player.....................

  • @Donniemeboy Don't get me wrong - this is not at all meant as a knock on the Gedmeister.... I love Ged's playing and Rush's music - all eras and incarnations of it, from the mid 70's all the way through to the present, I''m eagerly awaiting Clockwork Angels. But I gotta throw my two cents out there, and say that Billy Sheehan is probably a more technically skilled bassist.

But who cares? Geddy (co)-writes much more artful music IMO.

  • @ihateonlinepoker I think Geddy is better than Sheehan. Here's why. Sheehan can play fast, but he has no soul to his playing. I feel like Geddy wraps himself around each song and fills in the space between the guitar and drums just so that his basslines have the power to make or break songs. My opinion. I love Sheehan too, though, don't get me wrong.

  • @irishbug14 I agree with you... musically I think Geddy is light years beyond Sheehan. What I mean by technical skill, is that if like they had a duel or some such nonsense like that, IMO Billy would have the edge. He's faster, and flashier and can pull off all sortsa crazy shit... but again, who cares? That stuff doesn't necessarily always result in quality music.

Geddy could fart a good tune and I wouldn't be shocked.

  • i cant exactly tell if he's using the rickenbacker or his J bass....?

  • @MegaScreamingbanshee rickenbacker

  • @MegaScreamingbanshee That's the Jazz Bass.

  • Geddy Lee-3 my idol!!! I am a 15 year old bassist and I have been playing for a year. My goal is to get this WHOLE song down(: I have three minutes down so far!! Wish me luck :D. LONG LIVE RUSH!!!!!

  • Actually he only used the Fender jazz bass to Track on certain songs. You can hear the difference. The Rick has a real metallic string buzz sound to it whereas the Jazz bass is a little smoother. Listen to Limelight.....That's the Jazz bass, also on YYZ it's used on the punch- ins for geddys solo parts. Interesting right?

  • @richardgrahamjr actually this is the rick

  • All you need to do to get this sound is use any Rickenbacker Bass from the seventies and play through two 15" speakers with at least 200+ watts of power and make sure the treble nob on the bass is turned up all the way and cut the bass tone nob down a bit! On certain parts Geddy used light chorus effects so a chorus pedal will help a bit depending on the song you are playing. Have fun chompin' at the bit Geddy lovers!

  • @richardgrahamjr Didn't Geddy track with a Jazz and play the Ricky live?

  • 8th notes sound like waves being made in pudding

  • SLAPP DA BASS MON!

  • i managed to come close to this tone on a 62ri jazz bass that was in gc one time. i wanted it because of that reason. alas i didnt have a spare $1000

  • this is goin to help me out so much! thanks. and rush is the greatest band in world history!

  • Geddy lookin' happy with his dawg.

  • @theamazingzivmaster Holy crap heres a dog tgere :O

  • i remember an interview where geddy said he used the ric on this song. he uses basically the same distortion throughout the whole record so it's hard to distinguish basses sometimes. honestly i've owned a ric and a few jazz basses, i can get this tone out of either, but i'm actually pretty sure this is the jazz

  • Uh..... And the Jazz bass has an obscene Mid-range.

  • Judging by the prominent low end, and somewhat muddy tone on this song I would say almost for certain he is using the Fender. Where as in YYZ you hear a thinner tone, with a lot of clarity and sustain. Along with a more evident pick attack. Which is a characteristic of Rickies.

  • @Raifo92 im pretty sure he is using more effect on his bass on yyz, atleast it sounds like it to me.

  • what amp is Geddy using?

  • It's easier (for me at least) to hear the kinship between Geddy and Entwhistle on the isolated tracks.

  • The most easily recognizable bass I've ever heard.

  • Slap a da BASS!

  • Amazing bass tone! I wish u'd tell us how you got this...

  • I love Geddy's playing SO fucking much. <3 C:

  • What tone!

  • Acgrt

  • Something is wrong by the end of the track it doesnt match the drum line

  • Amazing tone. I wonder how he gets it.

  • @jerrythepotato1919 Bass overdrive distortion pedal.

  • How did you isolate the bass track? did you use a software program or some clever EQ adjustments? It sounds awesome!

  • Comment removed

  • @bugnny He didn't use the Stein until Grace Under Pressure. You can definitely tell those tracks aren't Stein, as for them being Jazz, they all are except Losing It, which is the Ric. I don't know who told you otherwise.

  • I am a newcomer to the bass, but I want to learn this song more than any other. <3

It's just so awesome! Hell, it's Geddy Lee, how is not? ^_~

  • His Rick almost sounds exactly like a P Bass. I prefer the Signals tone to this tone though.

  • @CorvetteCoonass He used the Jazz bass on a lot of signals you can hear it REALLY well on countdown.

  • @Annonymus121 I always he used the Jazz Bass on Digital Man and New World Man. I've listened to that album so many times and I can say that the bass on Countdown is definitely the Rickenbacker. Just listen to Subdivisions and Analog Man, both use the Rickenbacker, the tone is exactly the same on Countdown.

  • @CorvetteCoonass Really, I always thought it sounded more like his Jazz..

  • @Annonymus121 Jazz Basses have a more scooped midrange when both pickups are used VS a Rickenbacker bridge going into a guitar amp. Since the pickups are spilt, the midrange on Rickenbacker comes out more than the Jazz.

  • he used ricky for both tom sawyer and limelight but i think he uses jazz p bass for yyz but i'm not sure

  • @zackjp Rick for limelight red barchetta and camera eye Jazz bass for the rest I think. I own a Jazz bass the sound is very distinct from a Ric MAN I WNAT A RIC

  • If you really want to get kinda close to that tone for this song, lower your action just a bit, turn up the treble, and hit the strings really, really hard lol.

  • @avebrian Any idiot could do that but without the right ax and gear you'd just have punk tone - fret noise, treble junk, no bottom

  • GOD Lee, Brazil loves you!!!

  • 4:02 you can notice the "alternate ending" ghosted (but not removed) momentarily in the background from the original bass track. I remember reading Alex talking about "ghost noise" sections on Moving Pictures from some of the first instrument tracks recorded over for whatever reason. Just like there's vids on Youtube of Tom Sawyer with the original (cold, not fade) ending, I'd kill to hear some of the initial versions of the MP songs... this isolated track was humbling to hear, though. AWESOME.

  • @joshcop69 Not to sure what you mean by "ghost noise" I think you are talking about "print through" or "crosstalk". Crosstalk is from poorly aligned tape machines where the tracks "bleed" over to the next closest track. Print through happens from storing tape "front out" instead of "tails out". Literly printing the oxide on the oposite side of the tape.Led Zeps Black Dog,The Way down inside , Woman part is print through. That echo before Plant sings his line is printhrough. Wasnt meant to be.

  • @marcusdolby1 Thats cool! I didnt know that. But I think that you mean Whole Lotta Love. Not Black Dog.

  • @fasionroadkill You are 100% correct. I meant Whole lotta love. Thanks for correcting me.

  • @fasionroadkill You are 100% correct. I meant Whole lotta love. Thanks for correcting me.

  • @ 3:31 there's a skip

  • @rgct1972 - Good ol fashioned punch in. No digital safety nets back then. You actually needed to be able to play back then .. and write your own music.

  • I love that sound

  • COuld i get this exact sound on the signature jazz?

  • @ventor11225 he uses rotosound 66 roundwound swing strings and im not sure about pickup or amps.

  • @ventor11225 YES with the right pedals

  • Okay is this the Jazz or not? watch?v=EKpn0esJ73w

  • Thanks to you, I needed this so much. Some of those notes I just couldn't distinguish with the whole band. Now I hear my mistakes and the real part clearly.

  • OMG, Geddy is the best bass player alive. My all time biggest influence ever.

  • @LegoBricKing

He never had a 4003. He had 4001s, but this is his 72 Jazz Bass

Much as it kills me to say it

  • Pretty sure he played a Fender on this track. That "Ric" sound is easy to get on a Fender, just trick it out with ultra-light (.95-.40) roundwounds and dial the treble up and the bass down. Should work on a P or a J. If you have a J, dial down the back pickup as well.

  • He clearly uses the Fender Jazz in the vid. Don't know why people say it's a Rick. As much as I would like it to be :). THE best bass sound I have heard ...EVER.

  • Nope, it was the Rick.

    watch?v=Wma2NtQ1CIE

  • @cciemail Gee I guess the official Rush Limelight video is a lie then? Yeah right.

  • @Ronbo710

shit dude, are you that stupid? have you ever heard of lip syncing? he could be playing a ukelele in that video, and it doesn't mean anything. we were talking about the recording. I showed you the video of Geddy Lee clearly saying it was the Rick. Now stop acted like Mr. Know-It-All, when you don't know shit.

  • @cciemail You're actually the stupid one here. Geddy used a Rickenbacker from Fly by Night to Hemispheres. He used a Fender Jazz Bass for Permanent Waves to Signals, which includes Moving Pictures. The video you posted, he says he used a Jazz Bass. Stop screwing with yourself.

    Have a nice day

  • @funkydude734

    check it again, dumbshit.

    starting at 4:48

  • @funkydude734 Wait what did he use for Grace Under Pressure to Hold your Fire? I remember it was one of those Basses that didnt have a headstock.

  • @killeroforce Steinberger? :)

  • @funkydude734 Geddy said in an interview, red barchetta and limelight are the ricky where tom sawyer is the fender.

  • @funkydude734 Permanent Waves is entirely the Ric as well. Tom Sawyer is the very first song he actually recorded using the Jazz. Don't talk down to people till you get your own facts straight.

  • @funkydude734 lol you're retarded

  • @funkydude734 Well there your wrong, because he used both he's fender and Rickenbacker on moving pictures, for example, on the song Red barchetta, there he uses the Rickenbacker, and on Tom Sawyer, there you got the Fender ;)

  • @funkydude734 I'm 90% certain I've heard Geddy say in interviews that Permanent Waves was his Rick and Moving pictures was his Jazz with some Rick. Additionally, the "videos" for a few of the songs from Moving Pictures, filmed during the recording, show him using both.

  • @LeinadAffar For sure, Moving pictures he used both. You can hear the Fender on Tom Sawyer, and the Ricky on YYZ. Going by those two you might be able to differentiate the separate bass guitars on each track. That would be tricky though because SO much of his tone originates in his playing style.

  • @funkydude734 He used both ( dunno how to spell it ) the Ricky And the Jazz on Moving pictures ;)

  • @Ronbo710 he uses his jazz in the video but i saw in an interview about his bass pass he says he used the Ricky for Limelight and the Jazz on Tom Sawyer

  • Most people think he recorded this with his Rick 4001 but didn't he actual record this with his Fender?

  • Could you please do the tracks for The Analog Kid?

  • Something goes wrong at around 3:32. It's like it skips a bit. Was that on the game track or is it a transfer to YouTube glitch?

I was playing along and kept thinking I was messing up until I listened to the bass track!

  • I love hearing all the frett buzzing and fingers sliding across the strings. Let's you know it's a real person behind hat instrument, not like this overly digitized and computer-enhanced shit we have nowadays.

  • @Fenderjazz1987 I COULD NOT AGREE MORE

  • @Fenderjazz1987 Amen to that!

  • AWESOME!!

  • AWESOME!

  • Is there a way to repost this without the 3:30 glitch?

    Thanks!

  • It's a Rick! In the low notes Geddy plays here, you can subtly hear the essence of Chris Squire's classic picked Rickenbacker tone coming through all of Geddy's intense finger attack boinking. It's even easier to identify this characteristic in The Camera Eye. Then, listen to an isolated bass version of YYZ (which is unmistakably done on his Jazz bass).

  • Defintaely sounds like a Rick bass....

  • @basshead71 I think it sounds like a Ric, too, but I believe Ged said in an interview that it's the jazz bass. But maybe this makes an important point: the tone that really matters is in your head and your fingers; give me his gear, and I'll sound like me every time.

  • Bloody hell listen to that tone. Sounds like the Jazz to me. It's only when you hear Ged's bass isolated that you appreciate how much he brings to their sound.

  • @adam872 I'm gonna message you a 18 minute video of Geddy explaining all his basses and what albums which were used for my friend!

  • @snapascrew Thanks again for that. Interesting that he said "it was the Rick, I think" on Limelight. The two sound so similar on that record, but both are fantastic.

  • @snapascrew Can you message me that also Sorry to bother!

  • @Zeppelin211 no problem!

  • @snapascrew Adam can you send me the 18 min interviev please? I want to check it out....Never seen it. Thanks! my email is rgraham67@yahoo.com

  • the "glitch" at 3:30 might have just been a punch in where geddy corrected or changed a riff in the track.

  • this is geddy trust me. how could you mix this with anyone else? It's the Ged-ster. lol

  • i just can't get that geddy sound on my bass :( but i'm gonna get a ric soon :)

  • I dont think this is Geddy playing, it dont sound like him

  • Sounds like him to me.

  • Pretty sure this is a Rock Band Isolated track. It's just not the best quality on Youtube.

  • @GiovaniB52 It is.

  • sorry Geddy but it does glitch at 3:30

  • Comment removed

  • don't use this one if you plan to play/record along with. It glitches at 3:30

  • ur an idiot

  • Is that Geddy's Puppy?

  • @SteveShivik

I believe that's Daisy, Terry Brown's cocker spaniel. I could be mistaken though.

  • Still! Geddy With a PUPPY!!!

  • cocker's love RUSH, just check out my channel to find out..lol!!! (for real though!).

  • geddy lee only used a jaco bass on malnar other than that he used mainly fender jazzes and ricks this is probably his rick

  • It sounds like a (at that time late model) Rickenbacker 4001.

  • @wado1942 If my memory serves me right. I think limelight was always played on his jazz bass.

  • how exactly do they record to make it so that other instruments bleed through the master tracks?

  • they might have recorded the same way steve albini does, where each player records there track seperately and then its put together to make the song.

  • Actually Albini seems to prefer tracking entire bands at once ("basics") with additional overdubs. Look it up.

  • that's also how almost all bands do it nowadays and it works out well

  • It may have been tracked all at once, or it could be headphone bleed. Some players dislike wearing headphones when tracking in the studio so they have a monitor speaker nearby and record.

Bleed is no big deal. Many classic tracks, especially from the 60's and 70's are going to be filled with bleed, mistakes and so on. Perfection can be the enemy of greatness.

  • shit ive been playing it a bit wrong

  • @vectron12 hahaha yea me too

  • haha cool...me too

  • holy crap how does he get his bass to sound like that???

  • Use a big amp and CRANK IT!

  • Lol, some people need to recognize.. that this is totally geddy. his sound that he has from his rick and his jazz, this is his rick. You can't mistaken this for anyone else. lol. It's him.

  • is this geddy lee? or is is someone who recorded it them self?

  • It's almost too spot on not to be him, I wanna say it is.

  • i dont really know, oh well

  • Comment removed

  • Can you put the guitar track as well?

  • Done. i uploaded it

  • AWESOME!
