  • Cracker- the band- have a song called James River. Everyone should check that out as well. Its depressing but great!

  • Words cant say enough about this song. I live in Richmond va and fish regularly on the James River. Its now my anthem song every early morning i hit the road headn to the river believe its playin the whole way there.

  • Richmond was founded as a trading post at the fall line on the James River. After the Civil War, former slaves found hard and dangerous work as boatmen moving tobacco and wheat from Lynchburg down to the Richmond docks. This work ended with the building of the railroad which runs along the river. A statue of a boatsman is on Brown's Island in Richmond.

  • I live in roanoke, and the james river is fucking awesome. OLD crow is fucking awesome... Thank you for making songs like this that i can get stoned to and float down a river and love every fucking minute of it. Old crow = Badthefuckass!

  • @2009dannyw I'm assuming you never read Atlas Shrugged. If that's what would make you happy, earn it. Against all the unfairness, because that's what our world is. It's a beautiful struggle

  • Moving cargo by river is making a huge comeback. If the subject of this song had just held on for 160 years or so, everything would have turned out just fine!

  • @EGrdneck

I'm currently living in Marion, it's a nice town but it's just not home for me. I've got a great job keeping me here for now, I think I'll be moving back to Virginia before too long.

  • I grew up in 804, nothing like it. Everyone talks about Alabama and Tenn, those boys have never seen Tobacco fields like the ones I grew up on.

Im in western North Carolina now, I miss Diniwiddie County what an awesome place to live.

  • good road trip music!!

  • theres no need to be rude- if u dont like it dont listen and dont bother to waste your time commenting

  • The railroad industry destroyed the river transport industry in the late 1800s. The small time farmer was able to transport his crops to Richmond on a Bateaux riverboat and sell it at farming markets. This song goes hand in hand with John Henry.

  • DEY TUK OUR JERBS

  • lmao

  • @hnorto ive never heard it said better! lol

  • @hnorto These were men born into slavery. Progress freed them, and then another type of progress took their livelihood.

  • @wdxb93f Den DEY DURKA DUR

  • I would be happy on 20 grand a year but the damn yankee boss keeps cutting hours because he can't take summer weather!

  • Awesome band just saw a few weeks ago. Goochland VA on down the james to Richmond Town.

  • This song is just great!

  • these guys are entertainers.

  • Just drove by last Sunday. Headed back 2 land o' pine next Wednesday. Thanx 4 wonderful cruisin tunes 2 enjoy & sing along 2!!! <3

  • I love 1:16.

  • agreed

  • @GanjikaAranyaka yes sir i agree

  • powhatan VA floatin on down to richmond town

  • Why do people use the word "progress" as an excuse for taking people's livelihoods away. It is such a load of right wing shit

  • you mean left wing

  • No you know exactly what I mean. It's always well off people and management bastards who think it's OK to cost people jobs for the sake of more money. These people use the word progress when they really mean profit.

  • Now tell me this, if you owned a company that wasn't doing so hot, and you had a chance to make it one of the biggest companys in the world. But it would cost all your workers their jobs. You were only making lets say 80,000 a year, but now if you sell you can make 2 million a year, i'd sure do it!

  • Like many people I'd be more than happy if I was on 80,000 a year. An employer has a duty of care toward his workers and that includes not making them jobless for the sake of greed

  • Why's that? Because I'm not a money grabbing bastard?

  • @AegeanProphet Your a douchebag?

  • @MattMonzo1991 well put

  • @2009dannyw forget the slave labor a run back to the forrests

  • @justinge999 I've had this opportunity and passed on it. Why? Because human lives and connections to other human beings mean more to me than any amount of money.

The fact that you throw this scenario out as if no one could disagree with you is just disgusting. You can't take money with you when you die, and you only need so much to get there.

  • @justinge999 That is called greed, my friend. You, as a business person are willing to sacrifice all your hard working employees just to make more money. No, if 80 grand a year isn't enough, fold up and go home. It's not worth selling out for more money. You are talking about people's lives, not just numbers. Maybe you, your father, brother or mother losing their job. Is it worth it then? If so, you have sold your soul to the devil.

  • And you would be called a whore because you put money before everything else in life. Actually, I am sure there is a better term for you but I can't think of it at this minute. Some help here--what is he??

  • @joelunchbox1 I do believe you could use the word greedy, Or to describe someone who has no money and never will... Poor.

  • great song ! = ]

  • OCMS FTW

  • I love this. It is touching my soul.

  • My FAVORITE OCMS song...just fantastic....so much soul in that song.

  • SCCCCCCCCCRRAMMMMMMMM!!!!

  • well that's very nice of you

  • Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this song is about the riverboat workers back in the 1800's when industrialization came through and trains took away their work. Great song from a great band.

  • Correct, amazing songs, almost brings tears to my eyes thinking about these men whose livelihoods were destroyed by the cruel and heartless march of progress.

  • Couldn't have said it better myself. I feel like I'm one of them when listening to this song. Takes me back in time.

  • it shouldnt. creative destruction is necessary in all industries. why drag a wagon when you can haul a semi truck?

sorry just got out of microeconomics lol

    OCMS = heaven

  • this is my favorite ocms song, and i love ocms...so that's saying a whole lot.

  • I was looking after JAMES RIVERS and his song "Jammin with J.R but I find this great song!
