Still remember when this when it went out Prime Time on the the BBC. It made your toes curl and was like watching a car crash in slow motion. Fine writing as always by Mike Leigh and superb acting by his then wife Alison Steadman. A classic for sure. Great Post.
It is a send up of the seventies lower middle class. Although the location isn't specified, you can imagine it's some Barratt housing estate on the edge of town where the residents drive company Ford Cortinas, read the Daily Express, mostly vote Tory and holiday in Greece.
A classic piece of British black comedy from the days when UK TV was capable of airing quality plays and drama rather than the complete rubbish that is aired today and isn't even worth a mention.
@Iceblooo believe me in 1975 this was original and became an icon for the gay community of the time.its a classic observation of the aspiring working class pre thatcher who unleashed that devil in many of us.its funny and tragic.
I rented this on VHS (back in the 90s) and my brothers came in and were all 'what's this pretentious arty shit?' - and yet after 2 minutes they were captivated! :-)
@Barrera21 ,hi,you wont believe this, first i played the film in my bedroom, computers next door in my daughters room, waiting for the first record to be played, after about an hour i heard the song and then realised what a fool i was, cause i couldve gone on to e bay for the album tracks, anyhoo i did this, got it ,and its lost in a dream
A Joy to watch, anything by Mike Leigh I find fascinating, the Man has this amazing ability to put together a range of characters who ultimately rub each other up the wrong way and it normaly ends in Bloodshed. FAB writing.
I've just watched the play completely till the end and for the first time. I'm feeling terribly DIZZY!! You always go "hahaha!...Oh bloody hell...hehehe...heeelp!"
I actually feel amused and relieved when I watch it, because it shows me that other people see the awkwardness of people trying to impress each other and fit in to some preconceived notion of some mass-marketed ideal....it shows me that I'm not alone in my feeling of being in a human version of "Animal Kingdom" sometimes...
I just sat through a schoolplay where Sue looked miserable and I think you should be proud, you are still in character....! well done. It isn't an easy part to play.
I came from a generation of disaffeceted late 1970's youth that rejected middle class pretentiousness, only to aspire to it in our 30's...then go back to living on a council estate in middle age.lollol
I haven't seen this as it was on before I was born. But I have to agree Alison Steadman is a legend. I saw her in the Alan Bennet play Enjoy recently and she was amazing.
After watching this on tv back in '77, I started speaking like Beverley at school. Yes I was a total fruitcake!

Abigail's Party is the most excruciatingly uncomfortable thing I have ever watched, and that's why it is such a work of art.
Alison Steadman belongs in the same esteemed category as that other great British actress Maggie Smith.

this has to go down in history as one of the best examples of pure genius - this is why they invented the term 'cult-classic'

Hard to believe watching this again now that her roles in this and Nuts in May were less than a year appart !
Mike Leighs latest film about British Eccentricity is on Channel 4 next week at 9pm Sunday "happy go lucky" .
+ Victoria Drake is a must see , at least someones keeping the British movie industry going with real stories .
Love his movies.
Fish Tank is another great British movie.
