  • After watching this on tv back in '77, I started speaking like Beverley at school. Yes I was a total fruitcake!

  • This is so dramatic play really it gives me a heart attac....

  • does anyone know where i can watch this online for free?

  • she dance like shit, song is great :p

  • Alison steadman is a fantastic actress

  • Abigail's Party is the most excruciatingly uncomfortable thing I have ever watched, and that's why it is such a work of art.

Alison Steadman belongs in the same esteemed category as that other great British actress Maggie Smith.

  • She is pure genius!!

  • just discovered this movie-amazing

  • Fabulous

  • Still remember when this when it went out Prime Time on the the BBC. It made your toes curl and was like watching a car crash in slow motion. Fine writing as always by Mike Leigh and superb acting by his then wife Alison Steadman. A classic for sure. Great Post.

  • It is a send up of the seventies lower middle class. Although the location isn't specified, you can imagine it's some Barratt housing estate on the edge of town where the residents drive company Ford Cortinas, read the Daily Express, mostly vote Tory and holiday in Greece.

  • The quiet girl Sue (Harriet Reynolds) died young, 46 she was, bless her.

  • This play is harder to watch than 2 girls 1 cup.

  • A classic piece of British black comedy from the days when UK TV was capable of airing quality plays and drama rather than the complete rubbish that is aired today and isn't even worth a mention.

  • @maxiboy666

Like who will remember The Biggest Loser in 34 years time, and who could sit through a re run of Big Brother.

  • having friends around for drinks is always a problem

  • beverly i love you

  • it is indeed a pity he is so fat

  • there's something really hot about Tony and the way the actor delivers his performance!

  • what on earth has classism got to do with emotion

  • Sheer genius

  • watched it last night and couldn't understand the point of it

  • I'm sorry, I really wanted to find this funny because I love Alison Steadman but it's just not funny. Maybe I need to see the whole thing ?

  • @Iceblooo believe me in 1975 this was original and became an icon for the gay community of the time.its a classic observation of the aspiring working class pre thatcher who unleashed that devil in many of us.its funny and tragic.

  • Alison is one of the best actresses in the English speaking world

  • this has to go down in history as one of the best examples of pure genius - this is why they invented the term 'cult-classic'

  • I would get up and dance with her, after a few party 7's though.

Imagine making love to this, know what i mean? LOL.

  • best comedy

  • I rented this on VHS (back in the 90s) and my brothers came in and were all 'what's this pretentious arty shit?' - and yet after 2 minutes they were captivated! :-)

  • What a classic love mike leigh he knows what works!!!

  • Timeless !! Who hasnt been to a terrible party where u just want to go home.

  • I know someone who can do an impression of Bev....... ooohhh errr

  • hell is beverleys living room

  • she is hot

  • what was the song that was playing before this? I'ts not on the vid but anyone whos seen it will know which one I mean. Its another Demis song.

  • @Barrera21 ,hi,you wont believe this, first i played the film in my bedroom, computers next door in my daughters room, waiting for the first record to be played, after about an hour i heard the song and then realised what a fool i was, cause i couldve gone on to e bay for the album tracks, anyhoo i did this, got it ,and its lost in a dream

  • Alison Steadman is so brilliant in this! :)

  • Has anyone uploaded the whole thing?

  • @FieldHockey007 buy the DVD, it's not that expensive and the quality much better that youtube :)

  • Im doing this as my drama peice in school, i have to play beverly lol. shes such an interesting charecter to play.

  • speechless!!

  • Another classic line - "I've got very beautiful lips".

    I love this play.

  • Brilliant.

  • Hard to believe watching this again now that her roles in this and Nuts in May were less than a year appart !

Mike Leighs latest film about British Eccentricity is on Channel 4 next week at 9pm Sunday "happy go lucky" .

+ Victoria Drake is a must see , at least someones keeping the British movie industry going with real stories .

    Love his movies.

Fish Tank is another great British movie.

  • Another little drink Sue? Alison is the cream of British Acting Talent

  • pure class.....alison is unique....and in nuts in may she is welll....dont get me started ...lol

  • A Joy to watch, anything by Mike Leigh I find fascinating, the Man has this amazing ability to put together a range of characters who ultimately rub each other up the wrong way and it normaly ends in Bloodshed. FAB writing.

  • Does anybody know where I can watch the whole thing online? nowhere seems to have it.

  • It's agony to watch a mismatch of people trying to "fit in"...lt makes me squirm to watch this.

  • I love the dress, would like to own one like this.Gooooooorgeous

  • "Ang, Imagine making love to this, do you know what i mean." lol.

    Alison Steadmans finest moment.

  • I've just watched the play completely till the end and for the first time. I'm feeling terribly DIZZY!! You always go "hahaha!...Oh bloody hell...hehehe...heeelp!"

  • I can't watch this. It's so uncomfortable haha

  • I actually feel amused and relieved when I watch it, because it shows me that other people see the awkwardness of people trying to impress each other and fit in to some preconceived notion of some mass-marketed ideal....it shows me that I'm not alone in my feeling of being in a human version of "Animal Kingdom" sometimes...

  • Hello John...long time no see!! Remember you from Stockwell Manor School.......what a dump!!! You did ok though and so did I.

  • I recently played sue in a schoolplay and I felt really miserable XD

  • I just sat through a schoolplay where Sue looked miserable and I think you should be proud, you are still in character....! well done. It isn't an easy part to play.

  • Thank you =)

  • 'Ever and ever, forever and ever you'll be my dream,

My symphony, my own lover's theme.

Ever and ever, forever and ever my destiny

Will follow you eternally...' Ange... imagine making love to this, you know what i mean? great....

  • I know, we'll all get pissed. Yeahhh, that's it, lovely!!

  • I came from a generation of disaffeceted late 1970's youth that rejected middle class pretentiousness, only to aspire to it in our 30's...then go back to living on a council estate in middle age.lollol

  • Isn't that rose west in the white top?

  • Possibly. Rose was a right party animal.

  • Oh gosh, I've played Beverly, and this scene was so funny. Alison Steadman is a goddess!

  • bloody classic comedy...alison steadman is a legend!!!

    xxx

  • I haven't seen this as it was on before I was born. But I have to agree Alison Steadman is a legend. I saw her in the Alan Bennet play Enjoy recently and she was amazing.

  • @goswellings absolutely. brilliant performance.!!

  • We all like Demis Roussos

  • Classic.

  • But he doesn't sound it when you hear him!
