@chiefsroc You don't know me and you don't know how I was taught. We learned to spike any way that could get the spike down. I learned almost 20 years ago before faceshields and "palm up" spike setting.
Out of curiosity guys how much of your track is still held down by spikes most of the track in the UK has been converted to clips and spiking up is fortunately not so common. Bloody hard graft doing lengthman/track patrolling on spiked sections

@trackend Most of the track we work on is held down by spikes. We do have many switches that are held down by clips. And we do have some sections of concrete that is of course totally held down by clips. The companies are increasing the transition to concrete ties.
Need to hit it harder, 10 hits per spike after several hits setting the spike will wear you out before quiting time. I know, I have drove a lot of spikes. It's the least number of hits we always went for, but we were also fast windmilling
Nice I'm 18 and I'm laying some track for my dad and the first spike iv ever driven I broke the maul handle go figure lol but I got it fixed and I'm trying the learn this windmill technique without breaking it again or he will have my head
good windmilling ,but you were taught to set spike with palm facing it.
