  • Hi there,

Does anyone know: Is this a movie or the filming of a theatrical production? Thanks!

  • I saw this movie when I was 18 in 1962. Phaedra left a lovely lasting impression on a very impressionable person and I will always have a soft spot in my heart for this movie. Whether it was any good or not, it was certainly controversial and that scene before the fire and the rain pounding on the window panes was unbelievably sexy. That was then. Now, who cares.

  • Melina never acted the roles of the good girl or the virgin. In every role she took, she had claims as a woman presence.

The film "Phaedra" was the ultimate expression of that style.

  • @sitarcos

check out "Stella" too, by the same director. I think tha is the ultimate.

  • @vaskes123

I've watched "Stella" so many times. Stella is the ultimate female figure of freedom and independce. "Stella" was directed by Mihalis Kakogiannis, "Phaidra" was directed by Jules Dassin.

  • @sitarcos You are right, sitarcos, what was I thinking??? :)

  • Because of this beautiful movie, based on the ancient myth of queen Faedra, Melina visited the British Museum and got the idea of returning the Parthenon Marbles campaign.

  • This is in the 60's! whake up!

  • So? 60s, 00s whenever - what's the big deal?

  • They use to smoke in the 60's. It was a sign of liberation and enjoing life after the war.

Go put your stupid comments to other videos of stars smoking that time, James Din, Rita Hayworth and many more. You'll get your answers!

  • @sitarcos

James Dean was no longer alive by the beginning of the 60s.

  • Unclealand: Go rent NEVER ON SUNDAY and get your answer.

  • Wow.

  • Very nice indeed, thank you for this

  • Melina Mercouri invented the business of 'BEING GREEK'. She used that fact to the hilt. In this video you can almost see smoke coming out of the mouth of this beautiful 'GREEK' woman who later on lost her beautiful singing voice and life when her larynx and vocal chords were covered with tar from smoking.

  • That's the most useless comment I've ever read about Melina Mercouri.

  • Πες τα ρε sitarco...

  • Why? Shouldn't it be a lesson not to smoke?

  • Don't underestimate my intelligence, an anti-smoking message was not ur point.

And what's that ''being greek'' theory you developed?!? !!

I can't believe I'm talking this crap while watching this beautiful video.

  • Greeks seem to love to smoke more than anyone else. All they are is puff puff smoke smoke blow in your face with no consideration. This Mercouri biatch was no exception and even continued to smoke after diagnosis with lun cancer. Served her right really, I have no sympathy for such cases.

Roy Castle, on the other hand and who also died in 1994, was a very tragic case for whom we have a lot of sympathy and understanding.

  • Speaking for nations in general, accusing them etc is something that Nazis did.

I really don't care whom you like or not. I just don't need to be liked by people like you!

  • And oh! what a coincidence!! Nazis started the anti-smoking campaign.

And also they felt no sympathy.

  • So? I must be a Nazi even though I am a Jew? Get a grip. Let me guess, you smoke and are Greek - gosh, what a surprise! Don't you realise it may be bad for you? You may enbd up with lung cancer like that cocky cow Mercouri who like a typical Greek would blow, puff, smoke with no regard for others.

  • You are a clown,

  • Please stop talking dead people down, especially when they've been so loved by the whole nation. And please, get a life!

Do you think YouTube is the best place to start an anti-smoking campaign?

  • @JMR83 you're like an old woman fretting about stuff. silly old tart

  • Tony is classic..........the ledgend lives on yehooo!!!!!!!!;)xxxxxxxxxxxx

  • though i love this film, i think Perkins is totally miscast in it. it's hard to believe in their affair. oh well, ...

  • In order to believe in their affair, you need to acquaint yourself with the greek myth of Phaedra. The film is a retelling of the greek myth and Tony Perkins is just fabulous in his role.

  • of course i know that. it's hard to believe in their affair because Perkins is ***MISCAST*** (as i said).

  • Mercouri exudes sensuality, but she's much more sophisticated and tempestuous than one might expect; she brings a spontaneous complexity to the role that is refreshing. Perkins is appropriately tortured; his neurotic quality is expected, of course, but there's an intensity to it here that is beautiful, and his mad scene is exceptional. Equally important, there's a palpable chemistry between them, and the fireside seduction scene is one of the most erotic sequences ever caught on film.

  • yes, she's wonderful. re Perkins: yes, he's neorotic, and convincingly mad. but, for me, that's it. i just can't believe in the chemistry between them. nevertheless, the fireside scene is memorable, thanks to the director, cinematographer and (bless him!) Theodorakis.

  • Did you mean "Yey! Melina Merkouri was a great voice! It's kind of funny, how the other guy doesn't speak Greek." ?

  • Yeah.. I agree with you. That's what he probably meant!
