is that paraphen wax or however you spell it? thats what i have, and im afraid to heat it that way because it seems the wax is still directly on the burner even though theres 2 pans
But do us straight paraphen wax or a mixture of beeswax?
This is a great video for a man that has never done many arts and crafts things. How many hours does one of your small mason jar candles burn? If I knew that, I could determine how many I would need to have a three year supply. You did not cover the wicks or the silver in color wick weights at the bottom of the jars, in this video. If I glued the wick weights to bottom of the inside of the jar, would I be able to remove it so that I could clean and reuse the jar for future candles?
@1bornsurvivor You can heat the jars up and take the wick out....it's only hot glue holding the wick down. Looks to me like she used a 6 inch wick clip assembly and her supplies look like they are from Lone Star Candle Supply.
I have watched the other candle making video and I noticed that you use the same sized jars then too. It must work fine but do you have problems with the flame when the candle burns way down close to the bottom of the jar? Keep up the good work, I enjoy the videos.
What I like is the use of regular canning jars. This way you can put a lid on it and keep the fragrance fresh for a very long time. Also if it gets very hot and the was melts just a little the jar with a lid keep the wax from spilling and making a really big mess. It was a very good video.
I'm lazy about candles, rather than using wax, I just use oil, and pour in some scented oil with it...I've now collected several oil bottles that have pre-mixed scented oil ready to pour into whichever glass shape I figure will suit best.
Are those wired wicks? Generally if they don't have the wire, they'll just fall into the candle when they weaken from the hot wax being poured over them... For that reason, I do the popsicle stick thing before pouring when using unwired wicks. Clothespins work good too if they fit across the mouth of the container. I refill my own tall glass candles, like those religious ones you see... without the decor on the outside.
wow thats pretty cool, beats the crap out of buying expensive scented candles from the store. Where do you buy the wicks and scents from, like a craft store or something?
But mason jars can crack from heat, as well. I used to help my mom preserve all kinds of things in mason jars when I was growing up, and there was usually one that would crack, even though we would heat them all first in boiling water (both to sanitize the jars as well as to temper the glass). Anyhow, I really like your vids and have subbed to your channel :)
@survivalistboards A little bit of an old video, but it's important to note: It's not so much a matter of glass thickness.
Mason jars are made of soda-lime glass, which doesn't tolerate heat shock well. You may not have cracked any jars, but you may have stressed them. Just slowly warm them up to the same temperature as the wax before you pour and you'll prevent any problems.
well kev...it just seems a bit excessive for something that doesnt really relate to your mission of teaching survival...and why do u feel you need to record and upload kristey 3 different times making candles

Great woman to have made all these candles.
However... if she really wanted to impress us she should have done all this while bakin a pie. Come one now, we all know a woman has time on her hands and she's obviously next to the stove...
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but you may want to try using soy wax. It doesn't give off any soot or toxins like petroleum based waxes (parafin). Also much safer if anyone in the family has asthma as I do.
Would the tiny amount of toxins that come from the candles really effect anything at all? I mean, unless your face is right over the candles or you are burning a couple dozen of them, would it make any difference?
Yes it makes a very large difference for people with asthma. It's amazing how fast one scented or petro candles can take me from breathing fine to gasping for air! I like to burn candles I like the light they give off and I even make my own much the same way as shown in this video, except I use the soy granules :)
Candles are great gifts, as well as perfect for survival situations. A few things I have learned. 1. for survival you want them unscented, the many candles you burn during an emergency will quickly let the scents give you a headache! 2. lighter colored candles give brighter light, darker color candle burn longer. I don't know why it just is. 3. proper care of your wick length etc. will give you better light as well as heat. 4. don't freeze your candles. mail me for more! lol.
Thanks for the response. How do I make those candle cups that you can carry around then set on the table to read the Bible by candlelight ? The kind that men everywhere would like, if you know what I am talking about ? kinda like the handle of a tea cup but more round and goes on a stick welded onto a plate in a cup for the candle stick ? What are they called and how can make them please ?
They are called "chamber lamps" and you can either buy them for use, or if you are crafty make them. OR, you can do what I have done. look for a place you can buy pint jars with handles on them. Lehman's has them as does a lot of other places. pouring your candle in these, really helps keep the draft off.
A survivalist is bound to swear sometimes. Obviously she swore at the right time. I have a question. If the candles become hot, won't it cause the mason jar's glass to explode or what ? Are there better and more safer ways of making candles. If this was just me, I would have no problem but with the kids. I don't want them hurt. Thanks, very informative video.
@Strongliftweighter - that is why we use mason jars with thick glass. Jars made with thin glass are likely to break - or, when the wick is close to the glass.

Do you reuse those jars for candles? I heard that it's not good to reuse glass jars for candles because the repeated heating and cooling of the glass will weaken the glass. I'm wondering if I should reuse that jar I have or plant herbs in it.
what u need to try is get onbe coloer wax puting it into the jar but only fill it up lyk 1/4 the way let it dry and pore in a coloer on top of that do this as many times as one want try with diffrent coloers :)
