Even through Death and Decay there is and always has been a will to live on in some way....whether through our memories or the loving memorials dedicated to us marking our time in this world...but sadly, even they are not immune to the decay and being forgotten that eventually befalls us all....
I am sure your Friend will be more than pleased with His Memorial film- Do go back and make more.I love old cemeteries, but Highgate is the ''best'' I,ve seen so far.French cemeteries are quite different-the ''flaming torch held down'' in cast iron looked a French image-but probably fashions crossed the Channel.!
John Atchler was the person in the Horse With Bowed Head tomb at the beginning and end of this film-not Julius Beer-Jst googled-John Atcheler was Horse slaughterer to Queen Victoria, and Julius Beer has the huge tomb in the Lebanese Circle..It is a wonderful place, Unfortunately the ''Romantic'' Side of the cemetery is closed to new burials...I think all romantic people would like to be buried here, with Nature!
Just so peaceful and lovely to see Highgate again-was last there in the 1980's-glad to see the {Julius Beer?} tomb restored-[at the end, the tomb with the horse looking downward-Well done-very evocative.
@TheWingchundragon ...Oh, that sounds like a peaceful occupation, would like to work at Highgate, but Mother Nature is doing most of the work there.....
Why did annual cemetery cleaning day never become a part of the people in the locality of this cemetery. The condition of this cemetery shames those who bury their dead here.
The idea (when restoration of the cemetery commenced some 26 years back), was to reveal some aspects of the original architecture/arrangement of graves and to develop some areas as nature now intended. It's a question of taste as you correctly observe.
wonderfully atmospheric, the carving of the dog at the start is brilliant,,,,,it looks thin because its lost its master,,,,its face is full of grief and loss. brilliant work of a long dead craftsman,
absolutely spellbinding, these images leave an imprint on your very soul.......can you imagine being there.....its melancholic art,,,,beautiful, poignant yet disturbing ,unforgettable
I am fascinated by these old cemeteries. Just do not see these type of memorials in the cemeteries I am accustomed to. I suppose in todays money, these type stone memorials would be cost prohibitive for most people. There is something strangely haunting about these old cemeteries. Any one know the name of the music in this video??
@ambera15 - yes, we all die, that's the one inevitable fact that we all face one day & some of us get a shorter time than others. Where we end up though might not be a cemetery. If you choose cremation then you can have your ashes scattered wherever you wish. In regard to cemeteries, they may not be the happiest of places but what fascinates me with one as old as this one, is all the different stories each life could tell. You can imagine what their lives were like & take yourself back in time.
the magic and wonderment of death . we know we will all face it . the giant waiting room we call life will one day cease .and the above could be our final place of rest forever more .
I believe I paid four pounds to get in here, and yet it was worth it. You'll never again see this kind of a somber cemetery. But fascinating. Glad I wore tall boots for rain! the mud etc.....grass is always wet..you know England
I believe that was the Old Greyfriars Churchyard in Edinburgh,
For fourteen years the dead man's faithful dog kept constant watch and guard over the grave until his own death in 1872.
The famous Skye Terrier, Greyfriars Bobby was so devoted to his master John Gray, even in death, four 14 years Bobby lay on the grave only leaving for food...
The full account of the investigation at Highgate Cemetery and beyond can be bought online from Amazon or directly from its publisher Gothic Press. The book's title is "The Highgate Vampire" written by the author and exorcist Seán Manchester. This is a hardcover edition that is generously illustrated throughout with case file photographs taken at the time.
This is one of the most beautiful/evocative films I've ever seen.
BTW Felix Barkers book on Highgate (featuring the haunting photography of the late John Gay)
is entitled 'Highate Cemetery: Victorian Valhalla'. Last I heard, it was out of print, but copies were available(some online) secondhand; expect to pay at least £15.
My grandmother's funeral was at Highgate in 1984; the sense of Gothic tragedy was everywhere; fields of graves sprouting pernicious little tree saplings. They've since pruned the worst timber back to the bone (no joke intended), yet there's still an aura of Victorian history; some of the deceased would have recalled the infamous 'Ripper' of 1888; still others would have forever memorised their movements, when they learned of the Titanic's sinking in 1912.
Highgate Cemetery (founded in 1836) belongs to a group of cemeteries called the Magnificent Seven. It is the most beautiful and revered of all the Magnificent Seven.
Highgate has been allowed to keep all of its original charm and mystery, with some areas creepily overgrown. This creates an unexplainable atmosphere, mystery, a feeling of the unknown...♣

@TheTexn ...Let nature take its course...that people dying is part of nature, but nature is all about death and re-growth...
and I thought it was really interesting how there are trees growing through graves
I liked that, because there was no artificial pruning of things and making everything look perfect...
Some like it some do not ...

It's really far outside the main thorough fair in London. I had to take like 2 20 min Tubes to get there and then walk like a half hr.
Worth it though.
