Thank G-d for video footage and the technology, i.e., cd/tape/vinyl, that keeps the talented Mr. Wilson "alive" in memory. He was super-talented, and I had the pleasure of seeing him perform live many, many times since the 1950's when he began with The Dominoes that also featured Clyde McPhatter in the quintet. He was always the 'ladies man' and was shot by a disgruntled lover in a Central Park area hotel where he was staying during the 1960's.
GREAT PERFORMER. HAD A MASSIVE HEART ATTACK ONSTAGE SOON AFTER THIS. NEVER RECOVERED. ELVIS PRESLEY DID INDEED PAY HIS HOSPITAL BILLS.BOTH DIED MUCH TOO YOUNG.
JACKIE WILSON! Amazing Singer, Dancer, Showman! Jackie had it all! Great soulful
voice, incredible dance moves, and great stage presence. He was really hot stuff in the 1960's and deservedly so! Jackie's Talent was Great; sadly his life was cut short by violence! But we will all remember him!!
I have several albums by Jackie Wilson. This guy's range and versitility was unmatched...light opera, soul, rock and roll, pop, blues, etc. Listen to his soulful rendition of "Danny Boy"...packed full of falsetto. Then listen to his delivery on "Night". He sings it strictly by "scale". That last note... bam!, right from the diaphram. You're hearing this from a big Elvis fan....but, you just have to tell it like it is. Jackie Wilson was the greatest "popular" vocalist to merge from the 1950s.
@MIKEY12324 Absolutely! the sheer power and passion that he packed into a song was unmatched if you ever get a chance check out his very last recording "Nobody But You" he performed it if it were his personal testimony he himself said and i quote " this is the best album that i have ever recorded"
I'll take this over rap and hip hop any day. This was singing and great uplifting lyrics and a compelling beat. Suit306 is right -- if you don't want to get up and dance after hearing this song you are dead.
@whitechicuva Yes he did he was perpetual motion floating and dancing all around the around the stage he said in interviews that he got his dance moves i think from the boxing ring being he was an amateur boxer
"This fella, this next fella's... Got no problem the way he moves on stage - he's never gonna have an energy crisis. And I understand he's a good friend of yours, so I'd like you to introduce him, ok?"
"Yeah he certainly is. He's one of the greatest ladies and gentlemen: Jackie Wilson"
Jackie was one hell of a performer. His style was truly ORIGINAL! Yes, he was admired by his peers like James Brown, Elvis and Michael Jackson. Like them, his influence will be felt for generations to come.
Jackie is a legend but i see the comments below that whenever there's a black rockn roll legend they dis Elvis! The King opened black music to a wider audience, he was born in mississipi, raised with blacks singn gospel, dressed black style, greased & dyed his hair black, had a black soul & thats all he knew, Elvis was a dear close friend of Jackie, the 2 had a great respect for each other, jackie said " as far as music is concerned, elvis picked up from me, as much as i picked up from him"
According to Wikipedia, Presley actually dubbed Wilson "the black Elvis" the two greatly admired each other and were really good friends. Quote from Jackie Wilson: “A lot of people have accused Elvis of stealing the black man’s music, when in fact, almost every black solo entertainer copied his stage mannerisms from Elvis.” ..."However, unlike Presley, Jackie, incredibly, could somersault backward in mid air, and land into a split on cue, just one of many dynamic dance moves he was famous for"
I think "Black Elvis" (no disrespect) is an insult to Jackie Wilson. Elvis lived and went to church with blacks in Mississippi and learned to dance and sing like them. Michael Jackson studies dancing with Jackie Wilson. I can see similar moves there but not Elvis.
"Black Elvis"? Schitt -- Elvis spent most of his life trying to be the "White Jackie." There's a famous story of him talking about seeing Jackie perform one of his own hits in Vegas, and almost slinking to the floor and hiding under the table after witnessing how Jackie turned it into a house-wrecking tour de force.
By the way, no disrespect to Elvis -- Not sure, but I've read it many places, that Elvis actually paid Jackie's hospital bills and helped keep him alive during his later years.
@serpico56 and let's not forget jackie and elvis was great friends,,,,and fans of one another,,,and if folks would watch elvis performing return to sender they'll see,,,,i love it,,,from his hair to his clothes and his dancing they'll see and love it more

u r waste time trying 2 tell people that elvis stole jackie moves,, it was well known by all in the 50th and 60th. by the way elvis great great grandmother was black look at his mother her skin tone and texture of hair. it is hush thing everyone in TN knows it
@quaqua112606 That is true. Presley has Black,Jewish, and Scottish ancestry. A lot of people know his Scottish ancestry, but most people do not know about his Black and Jewish ancestry.
You write me about a statement a man or a group may have said under duress.? Remember it was the 50's and 60's. Hmm I wonder "if" one is told that should one not give praise to the "present king of rock", one would not get to perform-what would one do? Oh ah a "RACIST"- your accusation if not worth a responce.
You Xenophobic nut's It's a fact Elvis was a blonde haired blue eyed white boy. The media did not do "anything positive for colored people. The best example to show you is the fact's today about Mark Twain his books had the word "-IGGER all through it but now they want to re-write it to show it had no such word in it. Ok he may have been called the the 'Black Elvis' or whatever title u may want to give him, but he was better known as "Mr Excitement" and he sure could out dance and out sing Elvis any day... when Jackie did a show no no act ever wanted to follow him he was an extraordinary hell of an entertainer!
@keithchanner "A lot of people have accused Elvis of stealing the black man's music, when in fact, almost every black solo entertainer copied his stage mannerisms from Elvis." - JACKIE WILSON
@keithchanner And he sure could out dance and out sing Elvis any day... HA HA HA HA HA,more please,so funny, now go out side and give your head a severe shake you daft tit,ha ha ha ha...
@keithchanner But that was also true of Elvis. No one ever wanted to do a show after E and no one ever did. Lets make a Top of the Bill : 7pm comes Tom Jones. 9pm comes Elvis; 11pm comes Jackie Wilson ? I don`t think so !
@keithchanner i like jackie as well, he's one of my favs, he could out dance elvis yes, though out sing no...elvis was known for a deep bass-baritone singer and a tenor voice of 3 especially in his later years.
No other POP singer could match Presleys unique voice only Roy Orbison can level or had a better voice (presley & others said he's the greatest voice ever heard) as a complete artist Elvis is KING.
Wilson is MrSoul & friend a close friend of Presley, they had a huge amount of respect
hey mdhombre...that is what jackie wilson was refered to in his prime...the black elvis....that is historical fact you dumb ass.....all you write is spiteful crap...get a grip man.
@peterlines1 ...Ok ok ok another piece of shit writes as if they know the truth. Ok mr/ms Dumb ass a historical lie is more like it, but hell if you wish to belive the crap your mom and dad gave you, I have no problem with what you belive is the truth.
People can't you see? Ooop's I almost forgot mom / dad did not tell you the truth as others knew just by watchinh. Poor Elvis copied every move, sideburn ,outfits almost everything from Jackie Wilson. You see we or rather our folks "HATED" the fact that people of his color did much better than they were given credit for. So perhaps Elvis paid his hospital bill, hell he should.
@mdhombre Your ignorance and prejudice is nauseating. I can get along with people of any color. However you are obviously a -igger. At least you talk like one.
@myluv4elvis Oh my did I stike a KKK bone? Oh and the word -igger was from the poor crackers in the south that could not pronouce the latin word NEGRO. Now the word prejudice never can be attributed to people of color . Why? They have no money own no company own no business' they can not hire or fire anyone. Prejudice...Cmon man. Ignorance-- could be but until proof of your view is proven then what we have here is a failure to agree. The question really is "can color of along with you
@mdhombre Actually if you were not so racist, you would know Jackie Wilson said and I quote "“A lot of people have accused Elvis of stealing the black man’s music, when in fact, almost every black solo entertainer copied his stage mannerisms from Elvis.”
@peterlines1 I read all the SHIT you write you clerly have NO SENCE of true history. Loo NUT if anything it would be the White Jackie Wilson. DAMN you are either just STUPID or a Racist I think both.
@mdhombre Look you ass' think , no think, well in the 50's & 60's most if not all music the your parent's listen to was similar to "Pat Boone. Bing Crosby, Rick Nelson, ect. so by chance you think that now the "blue eyed" soul brother (lmfao) just miraculously had a sound? You say I'm stupid & a racist "REALLY". Oh and santa does exist.
Yes he did knock these two songs out of the ball park , could'nt have said it better..!! and from the reaction of the audience to just his opening line to "Lonely Teardrops" My heart is crying crying lonely teardrops" there was immediate applause although it was an oldie 50's song
Jackie really knocked these two songs out of the park......two comments....one, were they too cheap to pay for back up singers? Ridiculous....and second....his second song was an "oldie", a 50's song that must have sounded ancient to the 70's hippie audience.....RIP JW
A year later, Jackie would suffer a heart attack on stage, his life was spared but the lack of oxygen to his brain while he was being revived left him in a coma that he would never recover from. He died in 1984 at a nursing home 8 years after he fell into his coma.
With all of the so-called docu-drama movies (Ray, La-Bamba, Lyman, Dream Girls, etc) they've made over the past twenty-five years, I fail to understand why a movie has yet to be to be made with an unbelieveable story, about an unbelieveable talent, with an unbelieveable voice, wrapped up in an unbelieveable tradgedy no screen write could ever devise. WHY NOT? For all the money Gordy made off of Wilson, HE (alone) should do it. Or maybe Nate Tarnabaums family? RIP great one!
I saw Jackie live at the Zanzibar Club in Nassau in 1960. As one of the few white patrons to experience this force of nature in this setting was truely magical moment.
@aschneider40205 u are quite fortunate to have seen him live in 1960 in the Bahamas,! also i talked with someone who saw him perform around that same time in Kingston Jamaica at a venue called the Carib Club and he said all the jamaicans were amazed at his performance " he moved like he had on skates", and was so light on his feet..!!
aMAZING HOW LIGHT ON HIS FEET THIS 41 YEAR OLD MAN IS, JUST A YEAR FROM HIS TRADGEDY. ALL YOU CURRENT LIPSYNCHING STARS OF TODAY TAKE A LESSON FROM THIS MAN. HE REALLY WAS MR. EXCITEMENT, JUMPING JACKIE WILSON.
im doing a research project on jackie and i was just wondering if there is any footage of his performance in the latin casino when he suffered a heart attack
Jackie Wilson was spotted by Elvis in a vegas club doing a imitaion of Elvis singing Paralize and if u dont believe that then buy the Million Dollar Quartet album and u can hear ELVIS describe Jackie himself he loved both Jackie and James Brown and can be heard talking about the godfather of soul on ELVIS radio get your facts straight thats also why James Brown was the first to arrive at Graceland before the service try listening to the George Klien show he knew Elvis better than anyone
I read that Jackie Wilson was buried in a pauper's grave unmarked after 1,500 people attended his funeral. Could this be true?! It was also a surprise to me that he lay in a coma for 9 years from his heart attack and head injury then died. I always thought he died from being shot (he survived that, I later found). Couldn't someone have given him an honorable burial?!
@gentleradical Yes, also fans and friends raised money for a proper grave and marker besides his mother and and after his heart attack i heard that Stevie Wonder gave $10,000 towards his medical expenses
It was Elvis Presley (very typical behavior for him to pay random peoples' medical bills, pay complete strangers' mortgages, give cars and motorcycles to people, give the rings off his fingers to strangers, etc...) who paid (at least part of) Jackie Wilson's final medical expenses. Elvis also gave the largest donation to the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, among other things.
And the one that got shot in the motel was Sam Cooke. :'(
@nileqt1987 Yes Elvis was quite generous i had heard that he was, and according to an article in Ebony Magazine in 1960 Jackie lost about $7000 in jewelry at his many live performances from his screaming fans tearing away at his clothes while he was onstage on the floor singing drenched in sweat like he had been in a rainstorm...!! Jackie also gave $5000 to civil rights organizations like the NAACP
@jfkcamelot ...Sorry, the medallion he is wearing was not from Elvis. Jackie & Elvis met for the first time in June 1966 at "The Trip" a club where Jackie was performing in Los Angeles. They became very close friends and would often get together when they were performing in Vegas. As to James Brown, Elvis and he were NOT great friends...James might have thought they were, but Elvis didn't!
all 3 reasons you state are legit, iam. sadly, #1 is probably the main reason jackie never got his due. as long as people wiith a head on their shoulder understand jackie's greatness, that will have to suffice...
i know not many will agree with me, but jackie was in the same ballpark, as an adult, to michael....if you add michael's jackson 5 days, that might put him over the top.....when i first turned my wife on to the late, great jackie i told her i could never understand why elvis was a god, and most people didn't even hear of jackie. she said maybe it was because elvis had a lot more sex appeal...if that's the reason, most people are even stupider than i thought...
Jackie's AMAZING and under-rated for sure. I love his songs, he's got a good # of them...but come on man Elvis Presley! The man was absolutely amazing! His versatility is what I think most people loved about him and his amazingly caring personality. Unlike many artists, he could go from signing country, rock and roll to gospel to R&B to ballads...the man BLED music. He is the ONLY artist ever to be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame, Gospel Hall AND Country Hall! He also was friends with Jackie
I'd say that Jackie Wilson was--technically speaking--a better singer than Michael Jackson. Elvis is more famous than Jackie because: (1) he was white in a racist industry; (2) he preceded Jackie by a couple of years--Jackie was still with Billy Ward and the Dominoes when Elvis scored his biggest hits; and (3) because the period between the initial explosion of rock'n'roll and the British invasion has often been critically slighted, so many of its performers have been neglected and dismissed.
@iamanatullah You hit it right on the HEAD. I was "on the air" all through those days. I wish todays kids could see JACKIE WILSON. REAL TALENT one of BERRY GORDY'S first stars.
Absolutely!! ... also he was a major influence on Michael Jackson, some of you may remember the tribute he paid to him at the Grammy awards in Feb 84, a few weeks after he passed away
This clip was taken from his 1974 appearance on NBC's "The Midnight Special." This may possibly be the last known video clip of WIlson..before his massive heart attack and collapse leaving him in a coma until his death in 1984.
Yes that is true i certainly agree. and i would like to see a live version of "Its All Over" from that same album. the 1975 PBS special may be the one he did with Della Reese in Idyillwild Michigan. also there is the appearance he made on Soul Train in the early 70's
Yeah, those last 2 albums contained some great Soul Music, I love "Don't you know I love you" from the Beautiful Day LP
I wish someone would compile the ultimate JW box set complete with a bonus DVD of everything that exists of him on video - the Shindig performances, Ed Sullivan and all of those 70's appearances like Mike Douglas, PBS etc etc...
I'm ashamed to say this, because I'm a professional musician myself, but I'm not familaiar with Jackies newer or "other stuff". I'm only familiar with his greatest hits, but I understand what your saying. I don't think the guy got all the credit he deserved. Marc.
I just had a conversation with an old friend of mine who actually saw Sam Cook live, and he doesn't really care for Jackie Wilson, but to me, Jackie "had the goods", no matter what people think of him, the guy "really was", Mr. Excitement (at least in my eyes). Marc Trainor.
I agree with you that Sam "had the best voice", and also was a really, really good entertainer. Jackie to me had kind of his own "nitch" if you will, and to me that was the moves in his dancing and his charisma in terms of just "being exciting on stage". That's how I see it at least. Marc.
In terms of technique, Wilson was more technically gifted than Cooke. Jackie does things in "Danny Boy" and "Night" that were beyond Cooke's vocal range. But both are great singers, regardless of technique.
Wilson is MrSoul & friend a close friend of Presley, they had a huge amount of respect
kingofkingz1979 8 months ago
@kingofkingz1979 Don't forget Roy Hamilton who was Elvis favorite singer , Elvis was a huge fan of Roy

hey mdhombre...that is what jackie wilson was refered to in his prime...the black elvis....that is historical fact you dumb ass.....all you write is spiteful crap...get a grip man.
peterlines1 1 year ago
@peterlines1 ...Ok ok ok another piece of shit writes as if they know the truth. Ok mr/ms Dumb ass a historical lie is more like it, but hell if you wish to belive the crap your mom and dad gave you, I have no problem with what you belive is the truth.
mdhombre 1 year ago
Thats true you're absolutely correct
keithchanner 1 year ago
People can't you see? Ooop's I almost forgot mom / dad did not tell you the truth as others knew just by watchinh. Poor Elvis copied every move, sideburn ,outfits almost everything from Jackie Wilson. You see we or rather our folks "HATED" the fact that people of his color did much better than they were given credit for. So perhaps Elvis paid his hospital bill, hell he should.
mdhombre 1 year ago
@mdhombre Your ignorance and prejudice is nauseating. I can get along with people of any color. However you are obviously a -igger. At least you talk like one.
myluv4elvis 1 year ago
@myluv4elvis Oh my did I stike a KKK bone? Oh and the word -igger was from the poor crackers in the south that could not pronouce the latin word NEGRO. Now the word prejudice never can be attributed to people of color . Why? They have no money own no company own no business' they can not hire or fire anyone. Prejudice...Cmon man. Ignorance-- could be but until proof of your view is proven then what we have here is a failure to agree. The question really is "can color of along with you
mdhombre 1 year ago
@mdhombre Actually if you were not so racist, you would know Jackie Wilson said and I quote "“A lot of people have accused Elvis of stealing the black man’s music, when in fact, almost every black solo entertainer copied his stage mannerisms from Elvis.”

Bing Crosby, Rick Nelson, ect. so by chance you think that now the "blue eyed" soul brother (lmfao) just miraculously had a sound? You say I'm stupid & a racist "REALLY". Oh and santa does exist.

Yes he did knock these two songs out of the ball park , could'nt have said it better..!! and from the reaction of the audience to just his opening line to "Lonely Teardrops" My heart is crying crying lonely teardrops" there was immediate applause although it was an oldie 50's song
keithchanner 1 year ago 2

It has stayed with me all my life. . .

Jackie Wilson was spotted by Elvis in a vegas club doing a imitaion of Elvis singing Paralize and if u dont believe that then buy the Million Dollar Quartet album and u can hear ELVIS describe Jackie himself he loved both Jackie and James Brown and can be heard talking about the godfather of soul on ELVIS radio get your facts straight thats also why James Brown was the first to arrive at Graceland before the service try listening to the George Klien show he knew Elvis better than anyone
mavericklemieux 1 year ago
I read that Jackie Wilson was buried in a pauper's grave unmarked after 1,500 people attended his funeral. Could this be true?! It was also a surprise to me that he lay in a coma for 9 years from his heart attack and head injury then died. I always thought he died from being shot (he survived that, I later found). Couldn't someone have given him an honorable burial?!
gentleradical 1 year ago
@gentleradical Yes, also fans and friends raised money for a proper grave and marker besides his mother and and after his heart attack i heard that Stevie Wonder gave $10,000 towards his medical expenses
keithchanner 1 year ago
It was Elvis Presley (very typical behavior for him to pay random peoples' medical bills, pay complete strangers' mortgages, give cars and motorcycles to people, give the rings off his fingers to strangers, etc...) who paid (at least part of) Jackie Wilson's final medical expenses. Elvis also gave the largest donation to the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor, among other things.
And the one that got shot in the motel was Sam Cooke. :'(
nileqt1987 1 year ago
@nileqt1987 Yes Elvis was quite generous i had heard that he was, and according to an article in Ebony Magazine in 1960 Jackie lost about $7000 in jewelry at his many live performances from his screaming fans tearing away at his clothes while he was onstage on the floor singing drenched in sweat like he had been in a rainstorm...!! Jackie also gave $5000 to civil rights organizations like the NAACP

Great footage!! After Jackie suffered a stroke the next year Elvis payed for his hospital bills.
The necklace Jackie is wearin' in this clip could well be a TCB necklace, the necklace Elvis gave to true friends of his.
Elvis and Jackie had met in August 1974 at the Hilton in Las Vegas- the same year this show was taped.
Elvis had great admiration for Jackie's singing skills.
jfkcamelot 1 year ago
@jfkcamelot ...Sorry, the medallion he is wearing was not from Elvis. Jackie & Elvis met for the first time in June 1966 at "The Trip" a club where Jackie was performing in Los Angeles. They became very close friends and would often get together when they were performing in Vegas. As to James Brown, Elvis and he were NOT great friends...James might have thought they were, but Elvis didn't!

Michael Jackson idolized both Jackie Wilson and James Brown. Jackie Wilson could work the stage back in the day at the Apollo Theater in NY.
DeeDee3331 2 years ago
i know not many will agree with me, but jackie was in the same ballpark, as an adult, to michael....if you add michael's jackson 5 days, that might put him over the top.....when i first turned my wife on to the late, great jackie i told her i could never understand why elvis was a god, and most people didn't even hear of jackie. she said maybe it was because elvis had a lot more sex appeal...if that's the reason, most people are even stupider than i thought...
skontch1 2 years ago 2

Sam Cooke was great, but NO ONE has an "edge" on Jackie Wilson...no one.
I would love to see a live version of "Because of You" from his 1973 Beautiful Day LP.
BTW - what other 1970's era footage exists of Jackie? I heard a 1975 PBS special aired.
quigz1968 2 years ago
Yes that is true i certainly agree. and i would like to see a live version of "Its All Over" from that same album. the 1975 PBS special may be the one he did with Della Reese in Idyillwild Michigan. also there is the appearance he made on Soul Train in the early 70's
keithchanner 2 years ago
Yeah, those last 2 albums contained some great Soul Music, I love "Don't you know I love you" from the Beautiful Day LP
I wish someone would compile the ultimate JW box set complete with a bonus DVD of everything that exists of him on video - the Shindig performances, Ed Sullivan and all of those 70's appearances like Mike Douglas, PBS etc etc...

It's a shame that, the few chances he got on telly in the 1970s he had to sing his olds rather then promote his current ones
flemit11 2 years ago
I'm ashamed to say this, because I'm a professional musician myself, but I'm not familaiar with Jackies newer or "other stuff". I'm only familiar with his greatest hits, but I understand what your saying. I don't think the guy got all the credit he deserved. Marc.
marcbonnie2008 2 years ago
I just had a conversation with an old friend of mine who actually saw Sam Cook live, and he doesn't really care for Jackie Wilson, but to me, Jackie "had the goods", no matter what people think of him, the guy "really was", Mr. Excitement (at least in my eyes). Marc Trainor.
marcbonnie2008 2 years ago 2
Sam Cooke is a soul singer exclusively, Jackie sings it more rock'n'roll. But I think that, vocally, Sam has the edge on him!
kensheebattousai 2 years ago
Agree with you friend. Sam Cooke had a great voice.
Jackie Wilson was most lively....he was a great singer too.
Good things don't last longer........
KAIROA 2 years ago
I agree with you that Sam "had the best voice", and also was a really, really good entertainer. Jackie to me had kind of his own "nitch" if you will, and to me that was the moves in his dancing and his charisma in terms of just "being exciting on stage". That's how I see it at least. Marc.
marcbonnie2008 2 years ago
@kensheebattousai
In terms of technique, Wilson was more technically gifted than Cooke. Jackie does things in "Danny Boy" and "Night" that were beyond Cooke's vocal range. But both are great singers, regardless of technique.
