What a great idea. Fats was dedicated to keeping New Orleansmusic in the streets where it belongs. I was priveliged to join the guys in Jackson Square and was looking forward to meeting up with him again when sadly he died just before I arrived back . What a great miss. Glad to know Stackman still blowing a storm
Funny you should say that about a statue. I thought the same thing the first time I saw this photo [taken by my daughter-in-law]. I thought a bronze statue of tuba holding his real old sousaphone and sitting on a real bench in jackson Square. It would be one of the most talked about features in a city full of talked about features. Thanx for you comment.
Tuba Fats! A great friend to everybody! A heart as big as those HUGE hands that seem to be hiding the makeshift dairy tubing neck he was using at the time. "He isn't very materialistic, but he a great guy" said "manager" Walt Rose of Louisiana Loomworks who looked out for Tuba just 'cause he LIKED him! At Jazz Fest 95, Tuba was using a horn with a broken second valve stem, TAPED TO HIS FINGER! This picture should be a statue! He was ALWAYS there unless he had a gig. Miss ya, Tuba!
