As you consider this video, and discuss it... please remember it is a gravesite for 28 of Americas finest sons. Brave men who gave their lives for our Freedom during the Cold War. Men such as these manned radar sites spanning the globe keeping a vigil on the Soviet Bear 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for over 40 years.
My Father was a Ground Electronics Maintenance man at Pt Arena ( LP 37 call sign Madam ) GATR building!
Great video, I was assigned to TT-4 on 8 Nov 1960 and never got to go out because of the evacuation and skeleton crew, I was sitting in the Barrecks listening to the radio when the news broke that the Tower went down. Shortly after the tower fell I was re-assigned to TT-3 and did a full tour. Agreat loss of lives, It still seems like yesterday.
@whindyriver You have my sincerest respect and admiration. You and your Texas Towers brothers are heroes. I retired from the US Air Force after 25 years of service but, none of them like those you served. I believe that what you experienced needs to be better publicized.
I was 14 yrs old when my mother's brother, my uncle Chester Cudnik who was a civilian diver, lost his life on the tower. I can still picture her crying when we heard the news. There was a song at the time," Daddy's Home", by Shep & The Limelights. Whenever it would play on the radio she mentioned that my cousins, Chester JR. & Diane, would not have their Daddy coming home. Very Sad. There was even a rumor that they hoped a Russian Sub might have picked them up and saved them.
I grew up near the jersey shore, and remember hearing this story as a kid, think it was one of those on the beach "gather round kids, I'll tell ya a story" things. Always gave me a chill to think of that crumpled wrecked tower out there under the dark waves.
I was 11 years old, and remember it clearly. Such a cold, dark, night to be thrown into mid-Atlantic.
