how would u position the people in the portrait. For Xmas my family comes together and there wil be around 12 of us total. How would i position people and where would i place the umbrella to get the most even amount of light across everyones face? Also GREAT VIDEO!!
Is it possible for you to record a 5min family portrait video, like fro's 5mins portraits? I think that would be great and very helpful for us. It'll also show us how to deal with a family :D Keep up the great vids!
ok, but when you take a photo like this where do you focus? cause there are so many ppl in the frame... lets say you have 3 rows like in your diagram, do you pick the middle person in the front row and focus on the persons eyes? or how do you do it? thanks!
@MrTmd747 sure that can work and the illustration was just for reference - not meant to be taken completely literally. ideally you want people bunched close together and maybe two rows. thanks
@MrTmd747 1. You want to be on "1 single focusing point" for this. 2. When so, the camera sets 1/3 on your side - and 2/3ds on the far side of this 1 point. 3. Adjust the hyperfocal plane, or your "focusdepth" so everyone is in focus and your fine. f/4-5.6 is good for 1-20 peops and smaller apertures for larger groups. Tha place to focus would thus be "1/3 into the group".
Really nice vid, i only have two question, if im working with the nikon CLS, should i use the built on flash as a little fill flash if i only have one off camera?
@lolcat23 you can use the built-on as either a fill or to trigger your off-camera flash or both. have a play with it to see what looks best. i do recommend dialing-down the built-on flash as you will get much nice light from the umbrella.
@GrafTrahula you can definitely give that a go. see if you can get the flash a foot or two from the ceiling and aim the diffuser so that it's pointing toward the group at an angle. that way the light will angle down toward the group. run a few test shots until you are satisfied with the results before you bring the whole group in for the photo.
number of ppl = 25... I hate doing family portriats. as soon as we're set up children start running around. T_T . Challenge accepted. thanks for the great advice
Haha gret video. I kinda saw the qoute "You guys a little bit about" commin' up. That sentence has been part of every video of yours until now. Keep up the good work m8.

Can a Gary Fong lightdome substitute for an umbrella? because I don't have an umbrella
TheIamfrustrated 2 months ago
@TheIamfrustrated i don't know if it would substitute, but it would certainly diffuse the light.

@AdamLernerPhoto alright, I should elaborate and say that I meant when taking a family portrait

Great helpful video! i have a question, as i dont have a off cam flash only my 35mm 1.8 and D7000...
should i try a smaller aperture with high ISO and not use the built in flash? or with poor ligth i should use it? even knowing that is not ideal...
this for a small group,less than 8.
