Deep down I always knew that my addictions were symptoms of a physical disorder in the brain yet society believes that we are just weak or bad people. Mate puts everything I instinctively knew into words.
You really dont need to gamble on sports anymore! I use software that tells me which bets to place with the bookies to take advantage or arbitrage... get the details in my channel.
Just finished reading the book, and it was brilliant. Compelling argument backed up by research data and good dose of common sense aswell. A great man.
Humiliations, spankings and beatings, slaps in the face, betrayal, sexual exploitation, derision, neglect, etc. are all forms of mistreatment, because they injure the integrity and dignity of a child, even if their consequences are not visible right away.
However, as adults, most abused children will suffer, and let others suffer, from these injuries.
Thanks b0dhisattvah, I was almost convinced by this eloquent and extremely accomplished professional doctor. Thank god for the internet, or people like you would never be able to tell me the truth.
@b0dhisattvah Just the counter. The current system keeps many people as "perpetual patients". What he is advocating is healing the whole reason why people turn to drugs in the first place, while this may take more work (therapy and the like), steel is tempered through flames
The Interviewer represents the ignorance in society today. It's not a surprise that the "media" hires people that fall into their "world views" and "value systems" I hope more people (especially parents) are educated on how important child development really is. We are in the beginning on opening our eyes to root causes of society's problems. Its a matter on how fast the majority can be properly educated for the betterment of humanity instead of self interest.
No wonder why Dr Gabor answered all the interviewer´s biased questions patiently. He has been doing that for so long, besides he really knows what he is saying.
He is definitely a pioneer, and I respect him very much. He is of Iranian descent though, so i can't help but wonder how he got the name Gabor Mate. Maybe he picked it out of a hat! Regardless, he's a genius. I'm buying the book tonight.
I am not saying that I am doing really well I am saying that I am doing what I am doing. YOU tell him. This is so interesting. I love how he has a passion to help. I am so happy for YOUTUBE that I can be exposed to videos like this. Thank you for the post.
I simply love the intelligence, the compassion and the deep understanding that this man has ~Dr. Gabor Mate. Google up on him and learn from him, especially if you are into recovery from one forms of addiction or another or someone you love is suffering.
His book that is mentioned in this video is eloquently written, a must read! I wasn't impressed with the interviewer in this video, Dr. Mate deserves to be interviewed by more intelligent people. He handels this interviewer with the patience of a saint. Please take the time to read his book, it's well worth it.
Yes, the interviewer is awful, doing everything he can to put down the very people that the great doctor spends his life helping in the most brilliant and compassionate way. The bit where he says 'but they're so manipulative' or something was the worst. Love Dr Mate though.
@Redchick1111 The interviewer is EXCEPTIONAL by US standards where we are subject to a barrage of non sense, mindless, disgusting propaganda and puerile gossip.
What keen insight and what a wonderfully concise explanation of the factors contributing to dysfunctional behaviours. I agree wholeheartedly in what Dr. Mate says. His thoughts dovetail perfectly with the approach that I take in my talks. Bless him for his fine work in Vancouver and for spreading this significant information worldwide.
You cannot help but like this guy or at least respect what he says. He seems blatantly honest. Less than 5 percent of town down east siders overcome their addictions. I also like the distinction between obsession and passion. However, as in my life, these two can blend together.
It must be weird, totally weird, interviewing Mate. For one thing, he does not smile. He is really matter of fact.
Gabor Mate is an interesting character, great for a character study.
Outstanding. It was interesting to see the interviewer trot out ALL the standard arguments so quickly. I think there are about five of these held in society...he had them all. None of them hold any water and Mate addressed the myths elegantly and with credibility. Thanks so much for posting this!
Thank you very, very much for posting this. I so wish that I had heard some of this invaluable information ten or so years ago. For those of you struggling with addiction issues please listen very carefully to this man and read his book on the topic ; "In the realm of hungery ghosts".
Dr. Maté, excellent psychology source...but the host there is a douche.

This is all just an excuse for wallowing and diverting blame. This guy is a fucking quack. If this guy had his way, we'd all be perpetual patients.
