Alan Mclay want's to REMOVE sand to make tetrapods? Gee, lowering the beach and making it more susceptible to waves/tides sounds like a great idea! All throughout this video tourism is mentioned. Sorry, but a coastline full of tetrapods is not a tourist attraction. Lose lose situation.
Since cadastral surveying in the 1870s Beach Road has eroded around 60 m; and Kakanui over 100 m. I love the road but retaining it is not sustainable.
People need to open their eyes to the greater picture.
Great video. It really seems a case of the Waitaki District Council being short sighted and complacent about it's precious environment. It needs protecting now to ensure future generations are able to access this incredible coastline in the future. So too for the visitors to the area who generate so much income.
How many times is SH1 closed and this is a diversion. Not to mention , the Wainak to Ommers section being the best driving road in NZ, truly a pleasureable piece.
Locals have been trying to turn back the sea in North Otago since Victorian times. There has been millions spent on the Oamaru Harbour breakwater and it still gets breached on a regular basis. If there is a cure for erosion from the sea it hasn't been found yet!
Spending millions of dollars on a few acres of remote farm land. Meanwhile....a few kilometers north the victorian heritage town of Oamaru remains unprotected. We have already seen a business fall into the sea recently, next it will be a major employer, or someones home, or Waitaki Boys. If we need to spend on saving something thats where we need to spend the money.

Trust Alan McLay to say "It's all there for the taking".
Please don't spend any of my rate money trying to hold back erosion on this road.
If you want to save this road make it a toll road so it can pay for its self.
