That might be just a story, but i think, even though the song has a religious (gospel) style, it doesn't necessarily have a religious meaning. That is, he is not literally talking about The Virgin Mary. Of course I'm not Paul McCartney so I'm not the absolute authority on what the song is saying. :)

I think you'll find the WW2 reference is due to the fact that he grew up living in Liverpool, England, as a kid which was bombed the hell out of in WW2 by the Nazis. Many people were killed by bombing on the home land every night and the country was broke; what got them through it was music and humor. On top of that the UK has been a victim of terrorism for years from the Irish Republican Army so we know what it's like to be under the fear of attack every day by one group of extremists.
