i have an eee 701 running ubuntu netbook 10.04. compiz does not work at all, maybe its conflicting with another WM. im going to put 9.10 desktop on an SD card and boot that to see if it works. (is yours overclocked BTW)
I bought an Acer Aspire One here in canada for $280USD and it came with the Atom 1.6ghz processor, 1.5GB ram, and a 160GB HD, and the first thing I ever did was install Ubuntu 8.10 on it. I absolutely love the little thing, and if you're considering getting an Asus netbook, maybe give the Acer a look as well, theres plenty of reviews of both online.
actually, I think that there's a distro of ubuntu designed for the eee pc! as for drivers, it is so dang easy to get them it's pathetic. I just booted up to ubuntu for the first time about 3 months ago and one of the first things that popped up was 'restricted nvidia drivers available' it was so easy!
tmason, your doing to definitely love your eee pc. i got the 2gb surf a while ago, but with that 2gb i got rid of the lunix that came with it and replaced it with xubuntu (1.5gb required) giving me only 500mb but then i got an 8gb hc micro sd and a 320gb externel sata drive.
so from my original 2gb surf, i now have a new OS and 328.5gb (which is 328,500mb) which is freakin amazing!
anyway, your definately gonna love it. Just get creative and enjoy
wow! I've always been a windows user all my life, and only recently I've realised what I'm missing out on. As my parents are getting me an Asus EEE Pc (8g) for my 18th I can't wait to try out all this different open source software! God, if I manage to run this on my eee pc my mates are going to be soooo jealous, can't wait! Goddamit why can't my b'day hurry up!
as soon as you get the eeepc, you will have to download a different linux distribution and upload that onto the machine. this person uses xubuntu. other common linux distros include: ubuntu, pclinux, opensuse and fedora. please seek more info online when u get it.
Yeah those EEEPC's are pretty nice i saw one a CES and it looked cool to bad it has a rwally low amount of hard disc space... and thank god compiz will run on oold PC's cause i got ubuntu 7.10 the other day and i have a PC from like 03'
I was thinking about buying a hp 12" ultra portable laptop for about a 1000$ for internet browsing a eBooks, but this thing seems to be a good alternative and since I already use Linux then it won't be a problem to me.
and this one comes with a solid state hard drive which means the hard drive is shock proof...Boot up time is less than 10 seconds...I can't pry this thing off my daughter's hands...well i did buy it for her I might buy one for myself it's crazy small
I was going to do a similar thing - I was going to wait a couple of weeks to see if an ultraportable mac is released, but decided it would be insane to spend £700+ on a fancy macbook when I could spend just £220 on this.
EeePC is fun. Worth while, and 400$, big deal. But you definately need a full desktop/laptop for long term use, as this tiy machine gts hard to work on.
There's a 10" version that will (hopefully) be released sometime this year (2008). If you're going to be doing a lot of reading and don't mind passing up the bag space, that's the way to go.
Thanks for the correction. I hadn't looked into it that carefully, but now that I have, you're absolutely right. 8.9" is just as good, if you ask me :)
Omg! i cant belive!!!! Small weak eeepc runs compiz fusion (560 ~ 900 mhz cpu, 512 mg ram O_o)!!!! is it fake? zomg! Now iam realy thinking about buying this device o.O
Awesome. Can't wait to get mine to try installing that. If the Asus alone doesn't make jaws drop, installing Xubuntu and compiz-fusion on it certainly should.
Hey thanks for the great video! Did you manage to resolve the battery and Wifi issues that Ubuntu /Xubuntu has with the EEE? From what I've heard Ubuntu decreases the EEE's battery life to less than 3 hours, and the built-in Atheros Wifi hardware is not supported by Ubuntu's current Kernel. Can you confirm that?
I left the standard Xandros install on the SSD (for fast boot access for email/web/etc). The compiz-fusion you see in the vid is running under Xubuntu on a 8Gb SD card that I can dual boot too when starting the eeepc
How did you do that i want to do it on mine

If you guys are impressed with this, you should see what kind of eye candy and power you get from a full desktop on a modern system running linux.

amazing that it runs so well on a machine with such low specs.

i'm new to linux, just installed ubuntu. this is my first time with linux.
will this be pretty hard to do if i go buy an eee pc with little linux knowledge? or are the drivers pretty easy to get?
