  • I agree with your point about word of mouth.. In fact, we're going to start mentioning in the persuasive message chapters in our texts that successful social media efforts are "virtual word of mouth conversations."

  • Yes, there is certainly "social" communication that lies outside the boundaries of electronic communication, but we use the term "social media" in the sense that students will encounter it on the job (and in the sense that it is used universally in business today), which is as a set of electronic communication tools.

  • Not all social media is electronic. It's been around since cave paintings, at least, and has survived for thousands of years as Word of Mouth.

    This kind of distinction can provide much more clarity for students on the difference between social media and electronic communication: the latter is a media category, while the former is a reason for communicating, and types of media have grown up around that reason.

    I do, however, appreciate your textbooks & switched to Excellence in BC last year.
