good lesson. best one i've found on youtube. but i still dont get if the first chord is a 4 on the A string or a 5. because the 4 sounds all weird and cool but it sounds good with the D as well. does anyone know for sure?

Yeah, he's playin' it right, don't watch any others on here, they're all wrong!

1st finger 5th string 2nd fret

Pinky (get it?) 4th string 5th fret

and Tremolo effect and you're all set!

@scoby1knoby I gota agree with the 4th fret, the 5th fret would mean you are playing the same note as the adjacent open G string. But dont take my word for it, take it from the man himself.
