Man, Fred really made it happen on that tune, which is really hard both because of the tempo and because of the configuration. Without a drum, it's really easy to loose sense of time and the solo can very easily wear out of energy and loose "tightness". But he just kept it there, always taking creative and melodic turns. A true master.
that piano is a Yamaha U-7 ...well accepted as one of , if not the best , verticals ever manufactured. Inarguably the most precise workmanship... this is not an opinion
Wonderful insight. Phrases like "Emotional Rhythm" are a great way to describe the pace and place of playing a ballad with intensity and sustain. This is an important discussion.
Very interesting and entertaining. I enjoyed it, thanks for posting. It was also a surprise to see Fred Hersch playing on (what looked and sounded like) an old upright piano.
thank you so much for posting this....such generous insights into fertile music minds. all the comments, no matter how seemingly mundane, made me relax, and feel welcome to trust my understanding of jazz...and so made me love it even more.
Yeah, it would have been nice if, during the 6 minutes of racketeering, resume reading, and name dropping, they had just called in a piano tuner instead! Or better yet, moved the performance to somewhere with a grand piano and enough space to actually have a drummer present.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the discussion and thank you for posting so much interesting content.
Kenny G has seen this once
