Yeah I'm living in germany right now. The germans unlike some of their neighbors (the netherlands, denmark) would much rather have it dubbed than subtitled.
Nationalism is not the motivation for the dubbing, its the widespread of the language. The most people in Europe speak native German (approx 100 Million), Spanish and Portugese are common in South America...
There would be no use to take the costs of dubbing for 16 Million Dutch oder 8 Million Czech...
i think for a movie like this, it would have made sense to use everyone's native language. hans landa in german is brilliant. however, I was disappointed with the americans speaking german ...
I found the american actors german very impresive, especially since there was really only one american actress speaking german (as far as I can remeber). Obwohl dass ich kein deuscher bin, merke ich schon wie gut die deutsch könnte :)

@McMammut how does it even make sense? the first scene with the basterds has a translator because that one german soldier doesn't speak english. does this mean that in the german version everyone is speaking german the whole time? if this is true then using a translator would look RIDICULOUS!!! also, when landa is speaking german, did they use his real voice? if so, wouldn't it be weird to hear 2 different people speaking for the same person? the whole thing sounds incredibly stupid...

@Killerkarpfen1990 i can't speak for all "english speaking people", but i often watch foreign films and ALWAYS prefer the subtitles over of dubbed versions. i just think the films much more authentic that way. normally it wouldn't be much of an issue if the film is done entirely in one language, but i really think it fucks it up for a movie like this. like you said they had to change the script for it to make sense, and that is tampering with art (especially when its a tarantino movie!).

If you watch the original and the dub you don't really see a difference other then just you understand your language better of course. Actors have the same dubbing voice every time so the dubbers know how to speak their charackters. So we don't really ruin it, we just make it possible that people not speaking english can enjoy the movie properly. Many germans can speak english but some don't.

There is indeed an actual benefit to not having a dubbing industry: it helps people learn languages, especially English since that's the original language of most movies in our "Kinos" anyway.
Fun Fact: In the past dubbing was also often used to censor movies and/or distort their message.

Anyway why is everybody so pissed? If you want to watch it in English then set the language to Enlish. If you want to watch in German or French then do so. @luarionte That's how the German film distribution industry works. Everything dubbed for the simpletons, robbing the viewer of the film's true character. Can't believe they dubbed this one though, given the switches between languages is suhc a key part of the film.

@luarionte Everything is getting dubbed in Germany. It sucks - especially in this case. Although it's good in the beginning when he talks first French and then English to the French guy whereas in the German version they're actually talking French at first and then switch over to German which is far more realistic. Why would they be talking English - makes no sense ;)

Well i haven't seen this particular movie in German yet but usually they just say "Do you speak any other languages than English?" in German. Which is one of the reasons why i cant stand to watch dubbed movies.
unlike other countrys, germany has excellent voice actors. In some cases - e.g. old Eddie Murphy films i even prefer the dubbed version, simply because the voice dubbing is more fun for me as german to hear. Most of the hollywood stars got a personal voice acting double who always dubs him/her. And i guess most of the germans are happy with that, otherwise they wouldnt go to the cinema.
It doesent mather how good the voice actors are, It just isnt their voices. I understand German and yes, they "dubb" bether than other countries, but that actually just makes it more pathetic.
In some cases you are right, it isnt always possible for a voice actor to transmit the actual mood of a character. But as i mentioned, in some (rare) cases voice acting may add precious and funny components which may be a reason to prefer that particular dubbed version. It isnt pathetic when a voice actor tries to perfectly adjust his voice to resonate with the character/the actor. It s genious. And it is a matter of taste if one prefers the tone of that dubbing-voice or Brad Pitts own voice.
But why dont then make your own movie, where the person talking, is the person you hear? An actor is more than just an apperance and a voice is more than a sound. This is what you have to understand.
I watched this (and most of the other american movies) in original and dubbed version. Conclusion: imho they are both good. If acting loses all purpose when it is dubbed, how can it be that both original and dubbed version had a similar overall impression on me? And to finish the discussion about how good or bad dubbing is: There's no accounting for taste.
Why they had the same impression on you? Many people(especially germans on vacations) Can not see the difference between a real watch and a crappy fake. Thats why. I agree there is no accuounting for taste, but maybe with the right information, you and others will be guided to have a bether understanding of the world around you.

You cant generally say that a film loses it s spirit when it is dubbed. For german cinema watchers, this voice of brad pitt IS his voice, since we know that voice from the beginning of brad pitts cinema career. Imho, most of the dubbed voices perfectly fit and dont destroy the atmosphere of the film in any way.

i saw this movie in Berlin, the biggest town in Germany, luckily for me and my friends, the theathre only showed movie in their original form, but i guess that is only very few places they do that..

there are only two women in the whole film (exept for the woman working ind the bar.. but she did not talk in german).
these women were: Diane Kruger, who is german, and Mélanie Laurent, who is french and who did not speak german in the film neither!

1.they somehow changed the dialogue so that it makes sense in the context. didn't notice watching it the first time
2.waltz did his own voice in german
3.only the english parts are dubbed for some reason
4.i would also have liked it better if they just left everything the way it was, but, notice that to change it wasn't decided by "the germans"

The dubbed version of a movie is always worse than the subtitled original.
You just get used to the dubs if they are all that is offered in your country.
When I was growing up there was virtually no alternative to the dubs.
Since I have started watching only subbed versions of foreign movies I actually notice how bad the German dubs are!

There is indeed an actual benefit to not having a dubbing industry: it helps people learn languages, especially English since that's the original language of most movies in our "Kinos" anyway.
Fun Fact: In the past dubbing was also often used to censor movies and/or distort their message.

Anyway why is everybody so pissed? If you want to watch it in English then set the language to Enlish. If you want to watch in German or French then do so. Why complain about it, just do what you like and be happy that you have the CHOICE to to it. This is way too stupid to spend waste your time on complaining and so do I just quit this discussion once and for all. It's meaningless.

And landa's actor, Christoph Waltz is able to speak English and German, cause he is Austrian, so he speaks the English and German lines.

@luarionte Actually I was surprised to see that it was dubbed because the English was translated but the Frech was not, the German of course we didn't need to.
Then I thought.... "Maybe I should switch the language to Enlish and watch it with all 3 languages and not just German and French" but well I was too lazy.
But anyway you are right, normally they shouldn't have dubbed this movie but anyway we are so used to Brad's dub voice (alwys the same one) that it didn't matter which language it was

Although it's good in the beginning when he talks first French and then English to the French guy whereas in the German version they're actually talking French at first and then switch over to German which is far more realistic. Why would they be talking English - makes no sense ;)

I don't know but that is how it was explained in the movie and if you decide the French were German speakers then the scene would wctually make less sense because those hiding would of been alerted to the fact they had been discovered.

Actiually it makes more sense than the other way IMO.
It was in the German SS officers dossier that the Frenchman spoke English, there was nothing to suggest he spoke German. You may argue that the French were more likely to have German as a second language in the period but in that case switching from French to German would make the scene nonsensical as those hiding would be alerted to the fact they had been discovered since they understood Geman.
How does all that sound?

Well i haven't seen this particular movie in German yet but usually they just say "Do you speak any other languages than English?" in German. Which is one of the reasons why i cant stand to watch dubbed movies.

unlike other countrys, germany has excellent voice actors. In some cases - e.g. old Eddie Murphy films i even prefer the dubbed version, simply because the voice dubbing is more fun for me as german to hear. Most of the hollywood stars got a personal voice acting double who always dubs him/her. And i guess most of the germans are happy with that, otherwise they wouldnt go to the cinema.

In some cases you are right, it isnt always possible for a voice actor to transmit the actual mood of a character. But as i mentioned, in some (rare) cases voice acting may add precious and funny components which may be a reason to prefer that particular dubbed version. It isnt pathetic when a voice actor tries to perfectly adjust his voice to resonate with the character/the actor. It s genious. And it is a matter of taste if one prefers the tone of that dubbing-voice or Brad Pitts own voice.

I watched this (and most of the other american movies) in original and dubbed version. Conclusion: imho they are both good. If acting loses all purpose when it is dubbed, how can it be that both original and dubbed version had a similar overall impression on me? And to finish the discussion about how good or bad dubbing is: There's no accounting for taste.

Why they had the same impression on you? Many people(especially germans on vacations) Can not see the difference between a real watch and a crappy fake. Thats why. I agree there is no accuounting for taste, but maybe with the right information, you and others will be guided to have a bether understanding of the world around you.

@r2d2rx much of this film wouldn't make sense if it's dubbed. like i mentioned - using a translator looks really stupid when everyone is speaking german anyways. there are also a lot of times when someone asks "do you speak german" - and this way they are already speaking german! ABSURD!!! you also miss out on all the accents used by aldo and the "bear jew" which (aside from being funny) play a role in their horrible italian.

You cant generally say that a film loses it s spirit when it is dubbed. For german cinema watchers, this voice of brad pitt IS his voice, since we know that voice from the beginning of brad pitts cinema career. Imho, most of the dubbed voices perfectly fit and dont destroy the atmosphere of the film in any way.

Belive me, they dont fit, how can they?? Its not Brad Pitts voice, its some german guys voice. Brad Pitt and all the other actors you dubb are great artists, but sadly, you will never know. Watch ONE movie in its original language and you'll understand. I have spoken to german people who agrees with me, so atleast not all germans are retards. I dont understand french, but I wouldent dubb it. TEXT IT. Acting looses all purpose when its dubbed. Its disgusting.

I understand that. It's damn near impossible for non-germans to see that from your perspective though, but you've made a good point about the voice. Never really thought that you'd use the same Brad Pitt voice for every Brad Pitt movie (and so forth with other actors, of course).
But in my opinion, I can't stand watching a dubbed film or cartoon. It just doesn't *click*, unless you've been raised with them.

You must be joking. To even compare the artistic work of an actor in a movie with appearance, gestures and voice with an german voice actor in a record studio is just wrong.
Quentin handpicked Waltz for the Landa part because of his acting skill and voice, and you think it's okay to spoil that with dubbing? In my opinion it sounds more like it's a result of laciness to read the subtitles

Personally I much prefer subtitles. I'm not used to actually reading them, but I see them all the time since I live in a Spanish-speaking country.
It's not so bad once ou get used to it. In my opinion dubbed voices just destroy the atmosphere.
