Dear Jared Diamond: Europeans DID NOT INVENT guns, steel, the wheel, windmills, crossbows, writing, cannons, water wheels, chariots, agriculture, magnetic compass, printing press (Korea), algebra, geometry, maps, abacus, metal armor, metal swords, books, paper, money, sundial, flags, kites, metal helmets, measuring rulers and weights, guitar, bagpipes, harps, pottery wheel, sternpost rudder, lanteen sails, square ship hulls, pulleys, written laws, candles, castles, or the escapement mechanism!
I agree with DH. You should read his book. Your accusation of Eurocentric chauvanism on behalf a Dr. Diamond is without merit. Throughout his book Professor Diamond states that Eurasia (and that includes north Saharan Africa) formed a east-west cultural and geographic continuity that allowed crops and technology to be dispersed over a long distance. Far from disproving his thesis you have defended it. He asserts that much of the modern civilization came out of the fertile crescent.
Darwin has changed our society more than any other modern thinker. His ideas have ramifications that alter every branch of science and social evolution. I like the fact that you're expressing a love for his work. I only hope that we strive to discover more from his beautiful theory.
I recently realized to a fuller degree than I had, that I love reading his words because the his style of expressing himself, almost independent of the topic, displays a very human personality that is so likeable. Combining that recognition with a similar one I have had with some other authors suggests a video I plan to make, but unfortunately I won't be able to do it for a month or so. Thanks for commenting.
Darwin had some concepts of evolution wrong, mostly because he didn't have all the biochemical puzzle pieces needed to understand some advanced concepts. But his work is really great to lay the fundation of the whole evolutionary concept.
Thanks for commenting! Although he didn't get it all right, what he did get right is intuitively convincing to people such as myself who aren't professionals. I think that is the best part of it all.
You can't speak about evolution withouth knowing the new evolution theoryes derived from Daewin's one. It is obvious that you are going to find mistakes at Darwin's theory, i'm sorry to tell you but you are not the first one. Darwin was wrong becouse they didn't have enough thecnology. But know, whit genetic, there are no doubt about evolution.
I just saw that you have a Jared Diamond video as a favorite. When I get home (and can turn up the volume) I would really like to hear him "in person." If only he were running the world!
Even if I never heard him speak I would like to shake his hand. I have to disagree with you on one point though, I think we should take care not not to believe in a univocal representation of reason, especially when we agree with it. That said I think it would be nice to see at least the character of his ideas applied in terms of our foreign policy
I certainly did overstate it, didn't I? But it would be so nice to abdicate all responsibility for making decisions to someone else who seems to understand so much. There are no shortcuts here, however. Thanks for commenting!
Darwin was not an atheist, and many of the greatest scientific minds in the history of man were religious in some sense, from Maxwell to Einstein to Galileo. Logic and even language break down at the very beginning of the cosmos, therefore you cannot extrapolate empirical data to the question of a prime mover. People will *always* fill in this mystery with realms of meaning. You should read some Gould or Huxley.
I am going to hope you continue making videos, as I am now subscribing. You convey everything wonderfully, even explaining the jargon so everyone can understand the ideas. I hope a lot of people watch your videos.
As Dawkins has said, it's people like yourself that can help to change real opinions in America and boy is it needed! After Brasil come to Europe you'll be refreshed at the lack of religion
Are you really American? That's so hard to believe! Good to know there's still some poeple who can think in Morth America.. It really scares me to think that there's people in US who DON'T teach evolution.
Wow... I've actually only read "The origin of Species," the sixth edition. This was so interesting, and it's hard to believe internet videos can be this sophisticated, haha. I mean, just looking around on youtube... I'm on to watch the second one!!!

I don't think I said Darwin was an atheist. He was buried in Westminster Abbey and was a deacon of his church until he died.
You would probably be surprised at what I have read. I don't really think this comment has a great deal to do with this video.

If you don't mean Thomas H. Huxley, perhaps you should read some of his work.

True, it was a comment to a comment. I 5'd the video, in honesty.
