  • great movie! Seen it hundreds of times!

  • This really makes me appreciate CGI.

  • How did I get here from fightingdreamerspro?

  • THAT IS ONE HELL ACID TRIP

  • I'm rather interested now, I think I may have seen this movie somewhere before, but I could never remember the name of it. Thank you most kindly for showing me this.

  • althought this movie looks nowadays kind of fake and even its asthetics seems not atractive, i found it important as a piece of art and one of the pioneers of visual effects.

  • I have to write a movie review.. I dont know if I can say WTF in my review..

  • When i was little, and i went to my grandmother, i always wanted to see this movie, she was the only one i knew who had it on a ( old) videotape :)

I'm form the n=Netherlands, so i didn't understand what was said in the movie, but i liked it alot :P

    ( i'm 15 now)

  • Somewhere in Hollywood, some studio exec is watching this and wondering how to remake it using nothing but CGI.

  • i have this on dvd, have to watch when high enough

  • Fraggle Rock meets Lord of the Rings meets Labyrinth

  • Fucking idiotic 5 year olds, they don't understand how classic movies started everything.

  • opinions on taking mushrooms/acid for a first time viewing? pretty intense methinks

  • I'm 13 and I own and love this movie, so all those people saying my generation doesn't know a good movie. I'm living proof.

  • I love this movie!

  • I feel sorry for the new generation of kids, they have all these lame computer movies while we all got these great, terrifying puppet movies.

  • I love this Film! Or we say in german: Großes Kino!

  • Stop trying to compare cgi to this. This was 1982 for god sake. I must admit this movie kinda scared me as a kid, ill have to watch it again to bring back the memories.

  • puppets still have there place although it may be in history it still has an allure to some people, the skill in puppetry can not be ignored, however it is agreeable to say that CGI and HGR have both started to take the stage more in gaming and most definitly movies. its a hard one but gotta love where it all came from, go dance magic + david bowie =D

  • FREAKY FLICK!

  • this movie gives me NIGHTMARES!

  • @phlegmilyb OK

  • @MrFoster27 as a kid it was lol because of the creatures.

  • this movie is soooo creepy

  • 1:54 I had no idea Carla Bruni was starring in this...

  • amazing movie

  • Wow I got here by reading a Rayman 2: The Great Escape interview.

  • I wanna be like Kira, i wanna call out animals, i wanna have wings, and i want a boyfriend like Jen.

  • Best.Film.Ever!

    And that's coming from a 13 year old :O

  • Fake and gay.

  • God i remeber this movie so much i was so little my aunt showed it to me at that time it scared the hell out of me but now it makes me reminisce of how good it was to be a child:)

  • This movie looks awesome!

    I'm about to watch it.

It would be kind of cool to see a remake in CG though right? :p lol

  • Wow I cant beleive I found it, I watched part of this film once when I was about 6 years old i think, unfortunately I forgot the name and thus could not see it again, every so often this film would pop in my head and I would try to see if i could remember the name, and now with some help from my friend google I found it again, the fact that I was still trying to find out what the film was called, 16 years after having seen half of it, should be an indication of how awsome this film really is =)

  • I remember seeing this in the theatre! What a wonderful movie!!

  • this film is so fuckin awesome!

  • My boyfriend wants to force me to watch this..

    Help.

  • @AbbieWithRadiance watch it!.....it will change your life

  • lol this looks awesome :D

  • wel the movie is good but i wouldnt say the best .... but you got to place these things in the time they belong

if bought/seen it recently for the first time on psp umd and i must say i enjoyed it ... there may have been more action/ fighting from the gelfling side and a part 2 may have been nice .....

  • Such memories of excitment and terror.

  • With all due respect to James Cameron, AVATAR comes in second to THE DARK CRYSTAL by my reckoning.

  • I loved this when I was a kid and I still do - only now my own kids enjoy it with me.

  • IM PROUD TO BE 14 YRS. OLD AND STILL LOVING THIS MOVIE.My parents were only around my age when this came out.I wasn't even thought of at ALL.I love this movie.Compared to the effect now, yeah it wasnt that good in that department. But is has a great story line, really creative, and it JUST PLAIN ROCKS!

  • does anyone know the name about a kid in Scotland (i think) about witches and dwarves. I can't remember much about it. A late 80's, early 90's movie

it was a movie for kids but very dark.

  • Kira looks like Lacus from Gundam Seed.

  • I would NOT say "the best ever!" blablabla...

But the Dark Crystal was well done. It was a good story, was ahead of its time in many ways, and I enjoyed it.

  • I haven't seen this movie in years but I think that modern audiences might prefer 'Avatar' or 'How to Train your Dragon'. Its good that lots of people are nostalgic though!

  • This movie is amazing. Geez everyone calm down. Who gives a fly harbrace about wether the effects are good or bad. Its funny because its weird and was obviously inspired by illegal and controlled chemicals. Its better than all of the remake/sequel grammared shit hollywoods force feeds us today

  • wow, i loved this movie when i was a kid.this and labyrinth made my childhood. and by the way....E.T. too :-)

  • There is no film that is better than this, nor will it be, nothing can beat it.. ever!

  • How to Train Your Dragon.

Your pro-cosmetic arguments are now invalid. Have a nice day.

  • always loved this movie! it was the first movie that my mom bought for me! even tho i was born 10 years later xD im about to watch it again after maybe 13 years. i never understood it, now i will

  • when i was little this movie was awesome but scared the shit out of me D:

  • Saw this movie at our local theater on my 10th birthday, best muppet movie ever made. Period. The scene when the skylight opened up in the lab and you saw the three suns getting ready to align,to focus the power of the dark crystal, that was truly awesome.

  • happy belated birthday mr. henson

  • happy belated 75th jim henson....

  • Are you sure, Tary Gilliam was not involved?

  • ohmygod! i used to love watching this movie! although it did freak the hell outta me! those bird creatures kept me awake at night! haha, i still have it on video somewhere!

  • Good Movie1

  • Thumbs up if your a girl.

  • i havent seen the movie since i was maybe 3, and the reason why is because it freaked the hell out of me at that age. so i think i may not see it anytime soon.lol i'm 18 now

  • I loveee this movie. :D

  • looks terrifying

  • 18 Now and been in love with the movie ever since the first time i saw it when i was like 5. The memories

  • Another reason why I'm proud to be an 80's baby. I must say that Robot Chicken ruined this for me because whenever I see even a small clip from the movie, I think about that damn song & start laughing my ass off.

  • Spoiler Alert: How long does it take for the Mystics to get to the castle? THE WHOLE FUCKING MOVIE!

  • I love this movie, it used to scare me so much when I was a kid!

  • @MultiPosts the only thing that scaried me as a kid was the garthem.

  • @mOsherfr3ak69 Nope, he didn't. But I hope he does. Since he liked The Neverending Story, I bet he would like this one.

  • Comment removed

  • I would love it if the Nostalgia Critic reviews this.

  • What age would be appropriate to give it to my niece if it is nightmare inducing?.....also Labyrinth...

  • staring MICHAL JACKSON

  • A time when there was no cheap ugly CG.

  • haha this and the labyrinth used to scare me as a kid, but now i love them both so much lol

  • Probably one of the greatest movies Jim Henson has ever made!!!

Jim Henson and Frank Oz were absolute geniuses!!!

You will never see movies like these ever again thanks to Hollywood for

destroying the entertainment industries with their stupid remakes and

    their candy-coated CGI bullshit!!

  • Shit! I just found the movie that gave me nightmares for weeks as a kid! Thanks! lol

  • HOLY FCKIN SHT THAT MUFCKA SCARY AND UGLY AS MY SHT!!!

  • I watched this movie when it came out. I couldn't remember the name of it after all these yrs. Just watched it today, Jim Hensons best!!

  • This movie scared the SHIT out of my when I was little, but when I watched it again years later, I absolutely loved it. The concept artistry is quite beautiful and lovely.

  • Watched it N times and still awesome

  • This movie is well made for its time period, but do not show it to young children. It is terrifying and serves many nightmares quality fodder for the next several years.

  • @NeverIsASuicideWord AGREED!! This movie scared the bejesus out of me when I was little and I couldn't even tell you why...it just did.

  • good movie really weird i loved it!

  • I'm 35 and I STILL love this movie.

  • I saw this in school when I was 11 and it scared me so bad. this is the first time I can actually watch the trailer. Never planning on watching the movie again, though.

  • I have only love for anything by Jim Henson and Frank Oz

  • this was a great movie :D

it had everything!! including funny looking dinosaur humanoid like walking old guys :D Awesome!!

  • See Hollywood? This is why you can learn from the 80s.

You cannot beat cosmetics with computer graphics.

Stop being lazy, stop making shit.

  • @YTCENS0R But instead they steal from the 80's to make remakes and add the shitty CGI. It's a shame and that is why i will always go back to the originals instead

  • @YTCENS0R WOW those cosmetics look like SHIT!!!!!

  • @omaraty008 Grew-up on LOTRs? Bless.

  • @YTCENS0R Are kids that young learning to speak? Oh lord kids really need to stop making kids! I grew up watching these movies too (this and Labyrinth) though we own Dark Crystal so I watched it a lot more. Unsurprisingly I have a creature in my own novel that seems to have been inspired by all these hunchbacked draconic creatures.

  • @YTCENS0R Yeah, more realistic looking creatures = better selling of the effect.

whether its CGI or not,it doesn't matter as long they achieve the desired effect. and it seems CGI is the best way to do it and that's why the industry moved on from cosmetics.

The facial expressions of Gollum alone is better than anything seen in the the 80's.

It facilitates how the character shows emotion and delivers the lines in a more convincing way.

Cosmetics and anematronics are dead, deal with it.

  • @YTCENS0R you only hang on to movies like this because of how it made you feel when you saw them as a kid.

the tech used here is outdated and irrelevant.

Art has improved and any self respecting artist would be ashamed to produce a 2011 movie with characters like these made with cosmetics and anematronics.

    This is just inferior.

    in every way.

Just look at the lip sync.

    and it looks FAKE!!!!

CGI is more realistic more than any of this.

  • @omaraty008

I disagree. Look at Jabba the Hutt from Return of the Jedi. He still looks better than 99% of the CGI characters that are made today.

  • @ikdusVictor90 Are you fucking mental!

  • @omaraty008 Yes lets consider that of which is "irrelevant"; where you keep preaching at people's opinion's as if you're going to convince us and convert~

But to feed your ill-informed agenda: try consider what you can & can't touch, & the fucking irony of your last line.

After: sit your inexperienced mug infront of 1984's Day of the Dead, Dead Alive, Evil Dead 2, or any other pre-95 flick, then try the resurrection of zombie flicks: Resident Evil, & convince us why THAT shite is superior.

  • @YTCENS0R IT IS!!! FUCK YOUR 80'S CRAP! ALL OF IT!

  • @YTCENS0R everything looks fake and doll like.

and NO its not part of the "magic" or any of that crap.

its simply outdated technologies used before CGI broke into the scene.

and now it took over for a reason.

    superiority.

  • I saw this this when I was like 5 and loved it ever since

  • 0:55 lmao..wtf?

  • i watched all saw parts, silent hill and so on but this movie scares me :-/

  • I'm 19 now and I still love this movie! It's so dorky for a girl to like it, but I do! I grew up with it and I loved that it scared my little sister :D

  • @applebloooom Not dorky for a girl to like it!

  • @applebloooom

This was my favorite movie when I was little. I haven't seen it in years, since I was at least 4, So i don't remember any of it.

  • @applebloooom It's not dorky don't be modest! The best shows are the ones that treat kids like adults, and the one that teaches them lessons. And I don't think it's completely nerdy to look back at lesson. Your not a loser if you want to go back and watch a few shows from your childhood, heck it's the cool thing to do!

  • they dont make movies like this anymore. Its a shame that the movie industry is just now "make a huge action movie with amazing cgi" or "romantic comedy number 99328531"

  • I have to say, the fact this is all puppets is probably the reason why this is one of my favorite films.

Of course, it was also the inspiration for the Wise Wizard in "Your Highness"...unfortuantely, so was that 'very special epsiode' of "Diff'rent Strokes"...

  • my parents told me i used to watch this all the time i didn't remember so i looked up the trailer then realized it's the nightmare i always have lol

  • Will this movie be interesting to children, age 4 and 8? I'm looking for something to entertain my cousins with.

  • My favorite movie when I was a child and still is today :) epic

  • i remember this movie, though i was born after it. i remember watching it over and over and over again when i was little, and it annoyed the shit outta my sisters lol

  • MmmmmH

    Jen: I'm searching (Vi)Agra

    Agra: Ge(y)fling, that can't be !?

  • this movie was 10 times better than any harry potter or lord of the rings.PURE CLASSIC CHILDHOOD ORIGINAL. Thanks Jim.

  • i've seen this so many times... awesome movie *)

  • Scariest damn movie ever.....

  • im 16, and this movie used to scare the living shit out of me.

  • @Duddett24 haha true

  • CGI? Special Effects? Who needs all that stuff when you got puppets. Michael Bay, James Cameron, and any others. Eat your heart out.

  • @View100 LOL Puppets look really really really bad and dorky for 2011, that's why they stopped using them.

  • The Dark Crystal: Journey to the Uncanny Valley

  • They should really remake this movie. I bet it would be super awesome!

  • @Aedahx is that really a wise idea? i mean, it's perfect the way it is...and remakes DO have a rather negative curse to them....it's like saying "REMAKE LABYRINTH"

  • @kilnorc I would like to see a labyrinth remake!!

  • this seems a very interesting movie, i've seen Labyrinth (yay david bowie yay) yesterday and i totally loved it! and since this is also with puppets... IT MIGHT BE AN AWESOME MOVIE! i'm going to search for it ^^ thanks for putting the trailer on! this showed me another great movie :3

  • Dude! I watched this when I was little, I had no idea what was going on, but it scared the crap outta me!

  • They dont make movies like this anymore.

  • This movie scared me to death when i was a kid. I was to scared to watch the whole thing. Years later, i did and it was an amazing movie. What a creative film!

  • I remember watching this when i was 4 and not having a fucking clue what it was about. I just knew it scared the shit out of me, and i liked it.

  • This movie scared the snot out of me when I was a kid. I loved it anyway.

  • ^^ i loved this movie when i was little id watch it over including the nightmare before christmas!

  • it's been forever since i have seen this!!!

  • someone must have been REALLY depressed to come up with this movie. *shudders* how about we all watch Treasure Planet? lol

  • creepy

  • I'd never be able to sit through this.

  • This movie ROCKS! It was cool when it came out back then, it still is to this day.

  • I loved this movie when I was a kid. Now, I enjoy watching it with my kids. One of the classics.

  • Creepy

  • 1:25 that lady character was also in Labrinth. She was the junk yard lady with all the junk pilled on her back.

  • This movie Scared me... O.O

  • Planet of the apes

  • Love love love love love love love love love love.... love love love love love love love love love love love love..... oh and love.

  • this movie looks interesting, don't think i ever saw it. if i had when i was a kid i probly would've been terrified, it looks super creepy. weird tho cuz i loved neverending story and other movies that have similar elements to dark crystal. maybe cuz it's all puppetness? but i love sesame street too. lol idk.

  • i loved this movie when i was growing up. i'm 19 & when i watch it now i have no idea how i wasn't scared out of my mind when i watched it then. it's so unbelievably creepy. but i still love it to this day.

  • we were clearing out our house and found this and i was curious what it was... googled it... and apparently (according to dad) i wanted to watch this...but when mum and dad put it on... i walked out.... i have to say.. it looks quite good

  • OMG i think Jen is hot

  • This movie was my absolute favorite when I was growing up. My dad bought it and i watched it over and over.

  • Look to all fo you who say this movie isnt shit, you obviously havent watched when you were a child! You missed out. Im 17 and i grew up watching this movie, my sister and I absoulutly loved it!! Brings back so many memories. It also looks completly different to me now than when it did when i was a child, i thought everything was sooooo real !!!

  • This looks incredibly creepy.

  • hehe you people are so disgustingly pathetic...make me sick fighting to argue what movies fit the title of "classics" You call each other narrow minded when in fact your all idiots. you're to stupid to realize that it doesn't matter what titles movies fit into be it "classic" "new age" whatever. its about watching a movie and enjoying it. your the kind of people that do good deeds just so they can say that they're good people. your filth

  • It's not because i am ''a child''

It's not because i want fake tits and CGI

But seriously this movie is shit.

  • @Kuriix im 16 and iv grown up with this movi its not shit and dont u ever say that

  • @TheGIRROX It's shit

  • @Kuriix I think you're shit, great unique and different movie.

  • @42wing there are much more and unique better movies out there with much better stories

  • @Kuriix

You do know this was made in the 80's right?

It is a great movie and it's original. So stfu and go watch something else if you hate it.

  • @Kuriix ur shit i bet u fukking luv Transformers tho that was shit this movi had a beautiful message about how tho ppl may hav diffrent ieas an diffrentbeliefs doesnt mean we hav to always fite about it so im not going to respond to u anymor u obviously dont see the beauty of the late Jim Henson's work u uncultured fool

  • @TheGIRROX This movie was shit and transformers was shit.

The labyrinth on the other hand was a beautifull movie.

and for an ''uncultured fool'' my english is allot better then yours.

Language is part of culture right?

  • @Kuriix oh look another case of the grammar police on the internet so tell me this 1 smartass do you always type and spell EVERYTHING completely correctly on the internet i highly doubt that if you and i were in a spelling competition you would beat me i dont go on the internet to spell correctly theres school for that dumbass

  • @TheGIRROX there is a distinct difference between spelling mistakes and typing like a retard '' fukkin luv'' and the lazyness which causes you to type the three letter word ''you'' as ''u'' does it strain you to type 2 more extra letters? it probably does just as it strains you to go and watch actual good movies instead of this old movie made by a man on crack.

there is no good storyline the characters are only half done and the plot is very common

  • @Kuriix u is shorter then you therefore it fits in the box more easily does it not your just one of those condescending morons who cant bear the fact that people actually go on the ineternet and don't spell correctly well I have this message for you and all others like you: PISS OFF now I will refrain from speaking to you as your lack of intelligence is beginning to give me a headache

  • @TheGIRROX have fun on your ''ineternet'' with your crap movie

  • @TheGIRROX the irony of your bad grammar and calling people morons confuses me.

  • @TheGIRROX Transformers is GREATER than this will ever be!

  • @omaraty008 Are you talking about Bay's TF movie that never happened in my mind, or the 1984 television show that ruled my childhood? either way, your wrong, however if your talkin about the TV show I won't flame you.

  • @dairyduck Bay's TF was AMAZING!

  • @omaraty008 i already dislike you ! besides that: you are full of crap. and on top of that: everything you say here is so obvious, dull and boring it almost saddens me that we belong to the same species ...

    good day sir !

  • @XXXSCHOBELXXX ALL THE MOVIES YOU HOLD DEAR ARE UTTER CRAP!

  • @omaraty008 oh hoh ! witty remark i must say ..t
