  • kieron dyer followed in his footsteps and became a great player who was injured more then he played...... just like darren

  • I loved this team from 98, they carried on their great work from the Euro 96 tournament. A very strong team, and a pleasure to watch.

  • @peloquin1979 Despite being an Irish fan I always go for England as my 2nd team or my 1st team if Ireland (as normally) haven't qualified for the tournament.I loved the Euro 1996 team. The 1998 WC team would have been complete if Gazza had been included.

  • Totally underrated player. No coincidence that England had their best performances of the last 20 years when he was in the team. The Euro 96 and WC 98 squads were terrific.

  • my mate met him. Lad.

  • Christ above, what a goal. I'm a Spurs fan but he should have moved to Man United in 1995 for his own sake. Think of what he would have won. Instead he won one league cup medal.

  • Funny how we looked so much more dangerous in 98 than we do now.

  • @fujifour

Absolutely no question about it. That team had menace, poise, balance and creativity. So unlucky to meet Argentina so early, and to lose that game despite outplaying them for most of the match.

Consider also how few egotistical primadonnas were in that squad compared with the underperforming garbage of the last ten years.

  • @TitanFind I agree, it's a shame while the rest of the world developed their nations footballing prowess, we regressed and simply don't have the brains to keep up with the top teams. That said, our youth looks very promising. I cannot wait for Terry, Lampard, Gerrard, Ferdinand all to go. We need to concentrate on our youth, build teams from the base and then leave the seniors to set examples. English football really is in the gutter at the moment.

  • @fujifour

The four you mentioned, plus Ashley Cole, are the most guilty of the lot. No pride in playing for the shirt.

  • not bad,..from a player nickname 'sicknote'...but anderton in red hot form for england at euro 96 and france 98...the memory remains....good english player....

  • The last match Colombia...

  • Anderton look like a 32 year old women.

  • He had such a great strike. Great player.

  • aw yesssssssss remeber this goal,

    what a game lol

  • sick note

  • Good Luck Dazza, announced his retirement today.

  • Seconded. His best years were at Portsmouth and Tottenham, and a great goal in this world cup here that brings back lots of memories.

  • oh that Mondragon, I remember this match. It hurt me a lot lol. Last year of the great Valderrama, Freddy Rincon and Asprilla who didn't play. I will remember all my life when David Beckham hugged Carlos Valderrama in this match, both great players in each of their countries, in sign of recognition for being a great player. I followed beckham after that, and for me he's the best midfielder that england has gotten ever, and michael owen the best striker at least from that generation to these days

  • XD Best ever ? He's not even top 10 he is awful xD

  • As I remember the game if it wasn't for Mondragon pulling off some great saves it could have been 8-0.

  • true
