  • sobbing every fuckin time

  • is the full opera available or did they just recorded this aria?

  • I believe this was performed on the Bell Telephone Hour show.

  • Nice pants...

  • he made me cry, absolutely the best performance ever. the best.

  • The best ever performance of the role. And the best voice for this role.

  • ¡¡¡FRANCO CORELLI GRANDE MAESTRO BRAVO!!!

  • Holy shit! Power! Passion! Effortless! What artistry!

Pretty much like how I sound in the shower (and I am operating under the burden of having to squeeze the pit orchestra in the bathroom with me). Anyhow, this was superb. Bravo Mr. Corelli; thanks Vaimusic.

  • Franco Corelli all day BITCHES!!

  • I will NOT be caught dead singing this

  • SUPER FRANCO FOREVER

  • grande

  • Look how big his fucking hands are!

  • THE BEST CAVARADOSSI!!! GRANDE MAESTRO CORELLI!!!!

  • is this italian?

  • Wow,he is the loudest and most dramatic tennor I have ever heard, the power of his voice is not possable. Is it real?

  • @sabbath7081 no its not real they used their digital equipment in the recording studio to make it sound like that lol

  • @Mikee1da The recording was made in the 60-s. No digital equipment was used at that time.

  • @tehen162 haha I know I was being sarcastic :]

  • A huge voice! A tremendous stage presence! Heart rending passion! Isn't this what grand opera is all about? Franco Corelli was a giant among singers. Look around you! Can you see anyone like him, anywhere?.

  • I only will say a name: Miguel Fleta. If you listen to him, you will ear Mario Cavaradossi with angel's voice. The best "E lucevan le stelle" of history is Fleta.

  • at 0.02 that little fart is part of the orchestra

  • VAI you could have done a much better job of transferring this video. The color and image quality it terrible!!

  • @marchesano

    Who cares!

Just close your eyes and listen to the greatest voice ever!

    RPG

  • VAI youcould have done a much better job of transferring this video. The color and image quality it terrible!!

  • Great Cavaradossi,great voice,powerfull!

  • bravooooooooo. He is the better

  • Troppo bello per essere vero !!

  • YOU KNOW WHEN SOME PIECE OF ART IS UNREACHABLE

  • HE IS BEYOND COMPARE!!!

  • You have no heart if this doesn't make you cry.

  • This will never be surpassed. What a talant this man had.

  • VERY Cool Video ~ Hearty Congratulations! Perhaps You & Your Viewers Would Also Enjoy Watching On You Tube: 1st Lesson FREE !

  • I can't choose between Caruso, Bjorling, or Corelli. They are my favorites for different reasons. Sure, I like Pavarotti and a few other great tenors, but not quite as much as these three giants.

  • I prefer caruso's rendition of this (his diminuendo is unsurpassed in all other recordings I heard) in terms of technique, and I prefer Domingo's Cavaradossi mostly because Corelli is a bit "too in your face" for my liking...amazing rendition though :)

  • He's not corelli.... he is Mario Cavaradossi!!!!

  • I recently heard E lucevan le stelle with Franco Corelli, Mario Lanza and Luciano Pavarotti, and I definitely prefer Corelli's version.

He's so dramatic when he performs his roles...

  • How in the hell do 12 people NOT like this?

  • @jontew

I do'nt no, maybe there names "is" bieber (!!! ha,ha,ha)

  • @jontew Dear Jon,

the reason is that not all people like the tenor dramatico, but prefer the lyric or spinto tenor in this role, however the 'hero'tenor should sound like this and correli is absolutely top!

  • @jontew It surpassess me! I have no idea.

  • He's in a class of his own. No other before or after him can compare.

  • @aforwood1 You have spoken the truth!

  • he is as usual amazing

  • So great to see him singing. He has everything.

  • Breathtaking! Kievest said it best! Corelli lives forever!

  • Seen this done before but never as good as this, Corelli is one of the greeatest Tenors of all time.

  • The most beautiful thing happened ever in the opera world!

  • Awesome singing and look at the larynx low, lower, Corelli!

  • one of my favorite tenors, for certain.

  • magnificent

  • Haldirzam.

  • There is no "greatest tenor of all times".

    Please enjoy them all!

But personally I think the era with Bjorling, di Stefano, Gigli, Corelli, Josef Schmidt is a very, very hard act to follow. - Even to this day, tenors can only hope to come close to them. To surpass them is simly impossible!!

  • @maxhansendk Don't forget Mario del Monaco, Alfredo Kraus, and Fritz Wunderlich(died before his prime)

  • My first opera experience in 1963!

  • @63oldgymrat That must have been a hard act to follow! I'm so jealous! ;-)

  • very strong manly tenor voice.

  • Corelli bellissima voce ,che Artista ! Sublime Ineguagliabile !

  • Thee greatest tenor ever bar none!

  • ¡¡¡GREAT BRAVO MAESTRO FRANCO CORELLI!! The Best Tenor of the 20th century and still is, never surpassed, not even matched. Never a deasafinada note, do not strip the voice, or sustained high notes and passed them to diminuendos beautifully sustained and all that perfection in a beautiful and powerful voice, also a great figura.Pero as "everything is in the vineyard of the Lord "Some people say they prefer to Domingo and he has a fault that express.

  • i love this tenor

  • I like to say that younger, modern singers are better than singers of the past, because performance standards have improved markedly over the years.

But after listening to this, I'm so moved, that I'll just shut up.

  • @ybravura

All the modern day tenors almost all song alike..what a bs standard for singer opera today...even the yeller Lanza is far better than anyone today..who is considered good

  • @mactopolis

    sound alike

  • @mactopolis Calling Lanza a YELLER is not really accurate. He sings NON TI scordar di me with some piano parts a Vuchella & countless other songs and arias in good taste. Lanza also achieved greatness wthout even trying and was blessed with a beautiful quality of voice with wonderful hi-note facility. No one sang american songs like Lanza. When the likes of Domingo & Carreras attempted them from time to time , they did sound ridiculous.Try Carreras Be My Love.I hope it doesnt make you naucious.

  • Just love this man!!

  • chilling.

  • This is the best version I ever heard.

  • This is the best ever done.

  • Corelli e' passione, drammaticita', lamento, visione, Corelli e' tutto.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @mrsdarcy123 ABSOLUTAMENTE!HE IS A GOD OF OPERA!

  • of course is enrico, sure.

  • yo sin dudarlo un segundo ,, franco corelli

  • It's not Mario Caruso, but ENRICO Caruso.

  • MARIO Caruso? Who is he?

  • my god... he nearly dies xD

    remarkable indeed

  • the greatest tenor who ever lived without a doubt

  • Stupendo!!

  • this man has passion.

  • ...I love Franco Corelli...

  • Incredible!

  • I wish Donald Braswell would record this aria

Franco Corelli was a mentor of Donalds in Italy

and Donald did sing this Aria before the accident in 1995 that took away his voice.... DB has a new CD

coming out soon. Its strange how much they look alike too.

    Ann

  • One of the best and realistic opera of Puccini , Corelli is passion , drama , tecnic and vision.

  • Epico, Magnanimo, Imposible...

  • Timeless! What a nostalgic voice, very unique. I saw him live when I was 6 or 7 years old in Rome with Mirella Freni. My Mama was studying in Rome on a scholarship at the Santa Cecilia Academy. She took me to the Opera every time she could and I have loved it ever since. Besides Pavarotti, Mario del Monaco and Corelli are one of my favorite tenors.

  • Remembers me Caruso. How amazing!

  • he is much better

  • Caruso. Undoubtedly.

  • James Bond singing opera!! lol!!!

  • The top of his voice is incredibly thrilling.

  • Magnifico

  • !!!BRAVO GRAN MAESTRO FRANCO CORELLI!!!

  • Corelli's voice was custom made to sing

Puccini!! We are enveloped in an

    emotional Niagra Falls! Passion, artistic

    phrasing, honest, comprehensible acting

and a powerful, unique voice make

    Corelli's performance unforgettable! Plus

the fact that he looks like a Roman god

on a furlow from Mount Olympus doesn't

    hurt. Thank you...spectacular!!

  • Dear Kievest. Could anyone extoll Corelli's virtues better than you just did? Beautiful description of the great talent of this remarkable tenor. If I could turn back time I'd plant myself right in the front row of this thrilling performance of this great aria. Bless Franco Corelli. Thanks to You Tube you'll never be forgotten.

  • @Kievest

    Nice comments....

Corelli was without a doubt the greatest of all Tenors....

I have studied the tenor voice for over 50 years and so I believe I am qualified in saying no-one comes close to his control, power, passion and finesse....

We are very privileged to see the dedication of this man and to hear his voice ...

    RPG

  • FRANCO CORELLI

    BRAVISSIMO!!!

The Heroic Tenor par Excellence, came to explore and develop all resources of his Beautiful Voice, the nuances between them diminuendo

almost impossible for the voices of great size.

The Romance and Courage that only he knew how to express.

    Single Master of expression!

  • Maravilloso

  • my god

its performances like these that really humble you

  • He's got such a thick, powerful voice. It's quite incredible to hear.

  • He was born under a solar eclipse

  • What the hell?!!

  • No other lyrical tenor has done it better than Corelli, before or after!

  • He is the best cavaradossi ever!

  • Nrobinsongs u are right. Donald Braswell's voice is close & looks like Corelli. Especially Donald's Tosca video. Done some reading this guy did study with Corelli.

  • I found another man that looks like Franco and has the same beautiful operatic sound that Corelli had. In fact, studied under Corelli. His name is Donald Braswell, check out his opera videos and tell what you think. The looks are overwhelming Corelli and so is the voice. Donald has some of his early performances on video on You Tube. Donald is much loved in Australia

  • Agree with Agorante. I haven't heard Corelli live but I've heard an earlier version of this recording. Still awesome though

  • This is not the way Corelli sang this aria when I heard him live. He did a big decrescendo on the high note in the middles. I think he must have heard the way Merli did it.

I just got Corelli's biography from Amazon today, I'll check.

  • As much Corelli as I've heard I missed this-it's great that material keeps showing up. I heard him in Tosca 12x live, and know many of the recordings. The famous diminuendo (hear the Parma one for endless breath, and it's a shock not hearing it ) became his standard way of doing it, and that is the way I heard it, and I suppose it had to do with his perfecting it, and having confidence-for when he did he threw it in everywhere. Di Stefano does a modified one-which may have been Corelli's source

  • Comment removed

  • with his looks,he could have made it big in Hollywood.

  • There will be Never another like him

a Heroic Tenor with the right mix of Drama, Romance Braveness Masterful depth of Feeling and Expression!!!

    BRAVISSIMO CARO MAESTRO FRANCO CORELLI!!!

  • name them

  • absolutely amazing

  • I actually saw (heard) him as Cavaradossi at the old Met...with Lucia Albanese as Tosca. It was her final performance at the Met. It was fantastic. And he was GORGEOUS. What a voice and SOOOO handsome.

  • Stop trying to score points off each other , sit back and enjoy this fantastic tenor.

  • are there any other videos with close ups of corelli singing in his prime and not just acting?

  • Yes, there are several: To lo sai, Cavalleria from 1961, La Boheme duett with Kirsten, Andrea Chenier duett with Tebaldi, the whole Forza and Neapolitan songs.

  • WOW!!!!! Love him!!!!

What a voice! What a beautiful man!!!

  • ¡¡¡MAGNIFICO CONCIERTO!!!

  • Looks and a voice to die for!

  • WOW

  • goodness that was intense

  • What an emotion... gave me goosebumps.

  • Del Monaco&Corelli ruled the dramatic&spinto repertoire back in 50s&60s.They didnt want to do any crossover performances like Pavarotti had done so frequently in the last 20 years of his career. They were the true opera superstars, earned that status through hard work, commitment to opera and dedication to their roles. Its appaling how many people today still consider Pav greatest ever, but in fact, his true legacy lies in popularisation of opera, not actual opera. He was all but done with opera in 80s

  • Corelli and Del Monaco sound and look like they did. I mean work hard. I suppose their interested promoters today have to work equally has hard. and to think Tower records has 20X more Caruso items than these two combined. It's appauling. Even in 2009. It must be that crossover stuff. That's the ticket.

  • And I mean Caruso himself on Tower items not mixed in with fifteen other singers on an album.

  • That's definetely not true. Pavarotti's success is due to both opera talent and popularisation of opera, but one cannot deny that he was perhaps the greatest lyric tenor ever, although he was very suited for dramatic and spinto roles too.

As for dramatic and spinto operas, I do agree with you. MDM and FC RULE.

  • Yes Pavarotti was great in opera back in 60s&70s.However,starting from early 80s he gradually replaced stage with recitals, three tenors, charity concerts, not so charming performances with pop stars.Mass media hype&hysteria always followed it.All that doesnt bother me,what bothers me is popular opinion of Pav:Probably 99% of people dont know any other tenor except him. What I mean is that he's far from Pantheon of Opera,so to speak. Therefore his career is divided on 2 periods:Opera&recitals.

  • I didn't state Delmonoco or carrares so I'm not wrong. It is obvious that those singers continually sought 3rd party teaching. But not Gigli. Gigli said he learned every day by singing himself and Caruso was the same as was Martinelli. Besides record sales tell the story.

  • Are you really suggesting that Martinelli or Caruso both recorded at the beginning of the XX century sell more recordings than Corelli? This is certainly not the basis these singers can be compared on.

  • Yes I am suggesting that and I said GIGLI. Just as I'd say Ponselle, or Lanza. Marcello Giordano isn't a bully so I guess his sales in our new electronic media may not have beat Corelli. Who knows. But, the bully personality cannot be hidden from the final balance and sound of the voice. Having sales globally 70 years after you die is just no method to compare. Ha. Maybe I'll check who's name even shows up on the Met's historic timeline, online.

  • continued.. But if I need to find any more tenors who sing each note as if it's Otello I'll know who to contact. Obviously, if you're not looking back to "XX century" then we'll have to adjust for the present day people - who want loud voices, high Cs, action movies, monsters and casinos. All are attended in droves.

  • IL MITO IRRAGGIUNGIBILE

  • What an amazing tenor Franco was...I wish I knew which of the present day tenors he mentored. I know Andrea Bocelli is one and Texas Tenor Donald Braswell II is another. Donald has just begun a second singing career after an accident that took away his voice in 1995 Hear him on youtube.. Lenski's Aria, Cavaradosi Tosca and Averte Torto. Thank you Franco for passing on a wonderful legacy.

  • Neil Shicoff studied with him too. I notice occasional similarities in phrasing sometimes.

  • He was initially taking lessons and learned from Volpe. But, reaching a certain launch point in his mind and no longer wanting to wait, he stopped his lessons and, I guess took off.

  • That's not correct. Corelli studied with Lauri-Volpi from 1962. Corelli was a great star by then by his own efforts (his debut was in 1951) performing regularly at all the great opera houses of the world. He did not stop his lessons, as far as I know, he had been studying with LV until LV 's death.

  • Well if he 'did not stop his lessons' all that time, there we can see the difference between singers without hearing them. Surely, it is beyond imagination to invision Gigli, Martinelli, or Caruso "taking a lesson' from anyone at all except themselves for many, many years in their careers. But, I'm sure you're right about his being a great star and singing in all the great opera houses at that time. So did Beverly Sills.

  • Sorry, you are wrong, Gigli himself said that he never had stopped learning. Carreras appealed to Corelli for help at the peak of his carrier. Del Monaco learnt a lot even after he became a star and so on. Learning is not a shame you know, great singers learn throughout their life. LV dealt and tought about Corelli like a colleague and friend, calling him his heir, he tried to transmit his huge experience. They spent 1-4 weeks together every summer in LV house in Valencia (Burjasol).

  • great singers have so many colors to choose from that it is imperative they get feedback from other colleagues/teachers as to which (colors) are presentable in context to the style desired. True, they "own" their voice, both as teacher and student, but freedom needs confinement (license) as to style.

  • I love his voice, perfect singer!!!!

  • c'mon, guys. corelli is the ideal cavaradossi. the voice, the hurt sensuality, the looks. maybe gigli's was better, but then gigli was gigli. bjoerling had a beautiful voice (and arguably one of the best voice controls ever) but i'll put corelli ahead of him any time.
