Survival rates for POWs in German hands were MUCH higher than anybody unfortunate to be captured by the Japanese. The Pacific War was considered more vicious for that reason , no mercy for the merciless.
Actually, The Russians participated in a great many manslaughters, the Americans killed a few innocents as well. No one's hands were clean in that war.

Thank you, I pray we'll never know the hell you visited to keep us free, but thank you.
NWM11Bravo!!! Thats what the US has done for 50 years, "We will not fight back", look what it has cost us. We aren't fighting any country anymore, we are fighting "terrorists", they have no country, no borders, they kill at will all over the world. 11Bravo is Infantry, maybe you need to re-think your thoughts or are you wishing to be infantry. The United States is sick of the useless and senseless murder of our citizens, here and abroad. Thank GOD for GW Bush.
"We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air. We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing-grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender!"
NWM11 bravo YOU CAN'T END WARS. WW1 the War to end all wars was the nick name of it. an ppl belived it. then WW2 came. as said in the Art of war when in Peace Prepare for war. we are humans have emotion called hate. your in a dream an wars will always go on it's what the Human race know's best.
politics is a man made illusion. Any war that comes as a result of it is also an illusion.
an illusion we are made to think is real and important. ITS BULLSHIT
fuck the tribunal..fuck the lawyers...you gonna let yourself get blowen to peaces because of some stupid policy created by a group of corrupt assholes in order form them to control your life...literally in control of your life..They only have to say its war time...and you will die in combat..mental and physical wise.
No, an era like WW2 will NEVER arise again. Any sense of honor or nobility is long gone. Nations lack the nobility of conventional warfare. In fact the last conventional war was the Korean War. Now no one has the bravery to fight face to face anymore! At least the Nazis and Japs fought face to face on the battlefield. Nowadays we deal with men with no sense of honor like the "Vietcong" or"Taliban".
They say the generation of WWII was the bravest. I believe they are no diffrent then any other generation they just anwsered the call. As we would today. I think if something arised like this again we would see the same things happening again, with the same valor.
I am very appreciative of the bravery these men had. It takes more than guts to walk into a life and death situation like Iwo Jima. It takes more than guts to keep on fighting when you see the men to your left and right die. Truly, just as it was explained so long ago, for the men on iwo jima, uncommon valor was a common virtue.
My great uncle Pvt. Harvey V. Stute was killed at the age of 19 on Iwo Jima two week after the raising of the flag. He was part of a three man mortar crew and a japanese artillery shell killed him instantly. He was in the 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines, Fifth Marine Division.
The recordings were from a live radio broadcast directly from the battle. I found maybe 5 somewhat connected audio clips about it. I think that all together, the clips were about 2 hours long. I had to shift through them all and cut out little clips to make the reporter's words coherent, concise, and fit the pictures being displayed. (They had some random news too from other parts of the war.) Sorry, but I don't have the links any more (I used Google though). :( Good luck with your project!
listen here. both japs and us fought very hard. we just fought better. and we both had limited amo. but the good part is that it is all over and hitler is dead, and we droped the atom bomb on there butts.
Had it not been for Joe Resenthal and his famous photograph, the well known monument of Iwo Jima would have never been built. None of those soldiers would have earned any more regocnition than that of an average serviceman. Instead, the men who were actually responsible for the capture of Suribachi remain unknown to most Americans.
The famous picture of the American flag going up on Mt. Suribachi was only the second flag to be put up. The first one was taken down because it was to small and so that the commander could send it back to Washington.
much more than the defenders, but the Japanese had the advantage, being dug into bunkers, I was actually responding to a person who claimed there were only 1200 Japanese, while there were over 21000
i only had the chance to see iwo on documentaries and i agree that both sides fought heroically. Both sides have my respect, however i think that the Japanese were better warriors spiritually!
i wouldn't say they were, if anything attacking a foreign island with no real idea of where the enemy is dug in requires more courage than sitting in a cave waiting to commit suicide does.
what about this? fighting from a cave, with limited supplies, knowing that they wont return home cause they are surrounded by an enemy who is advanced in every way (personnel, ammo, support)
yes..hiding behind well prepared positions they had months to prep..and what of 18 year old Marines jumping into japanese machine gun and mortar fire who would never go home?..if you think since the Japanese were out-numbered and trapped that they were more "spiritual" that is rather naive.both sides risked just as much, it is a fallacy to assume either ones more "spiritual"..I still stand by my opinion that the attackers where more brave.
first of all i said that both sides have my respect. You say "hiding" but i guess you know the difference of hiding/covering specially under a bombing and hey relax. i am not trying to change your opinion :)
haha I am relaxed, sorry for the tone there. Believe me both have my respect too, but as a Marine myself, its just nature for me to support my forefathers. I can only imagine what that must have been like for all involved, and on a side note I got to train a little with Japanese troops, and can say that they are very good men, and am glad Japan is our ally now. peace.
i was in army too (national service) but never went so far! we disagreed below but i agree with peace. hopefuly this kind of disaster will never happen again!
I agree. I am a former Marine myself (90-95) and was stationed at Camp Hansen, and then Fuji. We also trained with the JSDF & they are good soldiers. We had a difficult time fighting against an enemy we couldn't see and literally knew the island inside and out. We had no cover and Iwo's volcanic ash was difficult to walk in and dig.
it was good, but in the text, u refer to it as "D-day", although iwo jima WAS as d-day, when u simply refer to it as "d-day", most ppl would assume u are refering to the invasion of normandy france
March 26, 1945, after 31-day battle that pitted some 100,000 U.S. troops against 21,200 Japanese. Some 6,821 Americans were killed; only 1,033 Japanese survived. - Washington post dot com
Beautiful music, really gave me the chills, God bless all the men who gave the ultimate sacrifice, whichever side, for what they believed was something righteous enough to give there lives.....
This is the only one battle where I wished Japanese victory because they were better in theory...they just needed more man and it was first battle on the real japanese teritory

People need to realize that we can end war.
WE can end it if everybody realizes that we are all one human being.
We are being tricked by our leaders to kill each other....no soldier in the trenches wants to kill people...many just want family and peace.
but we let our selfs get tricked into attacking one another...that creates the hate and desire for revenge.
We are one...nobody has to fight.
Everybody could just say...NO I WILL NOT.
what are the leaders going to do about it?
cry like babys?

Sadly alot of people I grew up with have no idea...They simply have no clue about this.
if is wasnt for movies ...hardly any body would know about all of this.
It sucks because rap or rock stars have
become the heroes of today for this generation.
They get payed recognition, respect and MONEY they (in my opinion) do not deserve.
This latest generation of kids are forgetting this. The only thing that matters to them are who's on TV or in their ipods

politics is a man made illusion.
ITS BULLSHIT.

What is it when a peple do not fight for their Blood and Soil?
Charles A. Lindbergh Speech Sept. 11, 1941
Nationsnotregimes 3 years ago
No, an era like WW2 will NEVER arise again. Any sense of honor or nobility is long gone. Nations lack the nobility of conventional warfare. In fact the last conventional war was the Korean War. Now no one has the bravery to fight face to face anymore! At least the Nazis and Japs fought face to face on the battlefield. Nowadays we deal with men with no sense of honor like the "Vietcong" or"Taliban".

They say the generation of WWII was the bravest. I believe they are no diffrent then any other generation they just anwsered the call. As we would today. I think if something arised like this again we would see the same things happening again, with the same valor.
kewlboy567 3 years ago
I am very appreciative of the bravery these men had. It takes more than guts to walk into a life and death situation like Iwo Jima. It takes more than guts to keep on fighting when you see the men to your left and right die. Truly, just as it was explained so long ago, for the men on iwo jima, uncommon valor was a common virtue.

What a terrible battle! Marines and japaneses fought with bravery.
attela666 3 years ago 5
My great uncle Pvt. Harvey V. Stute was killed at the age of 19 on Iwo Jima two week after the raising of the flag. He was part of a three man mortar crew and a japanese artillery shell killed him instantly. He was in the 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines, Fifth Marine Division.

where did you get the person talking in the beggining of the video? pls. reply, cause we are doing the same topic for our project.
vergy4eyed 4 years ago
The recordings were from a live radio broadcast directly from the battle. I found maybe 5 somewhat connected audio clips about it. I think that all together, the clips were about 2 hours long. I had to shift through them all and cut out little clips to make the reporter's words coherent, concise, and fit the pictures being displayed. (They had some random news too from other parts of the war.) Sorry, but I don't have the links any more (I used Google though). :( Good luck with your project!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
The fact is that more than 26,000 Marines lost their lives on Iwo Jima, not 6,821. Thats incorrect. know the facts.
dagreatdesil 4 years ago
Know the facts - A casualty is not a death.
Casualty - loss in numerical strength through any cause, as death, !! wounds, sickness, capture, or desertion !!
As i said before
Of the 26,000 casualties, there were 6,800 deaths.
Get your shit straight

its a brand new museum and absolutly beutiful!
PadawanOsswe 4 years ago
Had it not been for Joe Resenthal and his famous photograph, the well known monument of Iwo Jima would have never been built. None of those soldiers would have earned any more regocnition than that of an average serviceman. Instead, the men who were actually responsible for the capture of Suribachi remain unknown to most Americans.
ntlr 4 years ago
Marines, not soldiers....we claim the title of United States Marines.
wernox87 4 years ago
The famous picture of the American flag going up on Mt. Suribachi was only the second flag to be put up. The first one was taken down because it was to small and so that the commander could send it back to Washington.

ntlr i hate to say but there wasn't 22083 japanese there was somewhere in 1200 of them i hate to burst your research
thisisgonnasuck 4 years ago
how do you figure that??...there were over 21 thousand defenders,..look it up.
hurk31 4 years ago
and how many attackers?
decasgr 4 years ago
much more than the defenders, but the Japanese had the advantage, being dug into bunkers, I was actually responding to a person who claimed there were only 1200 Japanese, while there were over 21000
hurk31 4 years ago
thanks for answer. however i disagree about he advantage because Japanese had reduced supplies and many leaks!
anyway, respect to both sides who fought heroically!
decasgr 4 years ago
yes no doubt the Americans held an advantage in men and supplies
to both sides respect for heroic fighting..seeing the island myself back in 04, still gives goosebumps as to what went on there.
hurk31 4 years ago
i only had the chance to see iwo on documentaries and i agree that both sides fought heroically. Both sides have my respect, however i think that the Japanese were better warriors spiritually!
decasgr 4 years ago
i wouldn't say they were, if anything attacking a foreign island with no real idea of where the enemy is dug in requires more courage than sitting in a cave waiting to commit suicide does.
hurk31 4 years ago
sitting in the cave?
what about this? fighting from a cave, with limited supplies, knowing that they wont return home cause they are surrounded by an enemy who is advanced in every way (personnel, ammo, support)
decasgr 4 years ago
yes..hiding behind well prepared positions they had months to prep..and what of 18 year old Marines jumping into japanese machine gun and mortar fire who would never go home?..if you think since the Japanese were out-numbered and trapped that they were more "spiritual" that is rather naive.both sides risked just as much, it is a fallacy to assume either ones more "spiritual"..I still stand by my opinion that the attackers where more brave.
hurk31 4 years ago
first of all i said that both sides have my respect. You say "hiding" but i guess you know the difference of hiding/covering specially under a bombing and hey relax. i am not trying to change your opinion :)
decasgr 4 years ago
haha I am relaxed, sorry for the tone there. Believe me both have my respect too, but as a Marine myself, its just nature for me to support my forefathers. I can only imagine what that must have been like for all involved, and on a side note I got to train a little with Japanese troops, and can say that they are very good men, and am glad Japan is our ally now. peace.
hurk31 4 years ago 2
i was in army too (national service) but never went so far! we disagreed below but i agree with peace. hopefuly this kind of disaster will never happen again!
decasgr 4 years ago
