i liked your story because i think i feel similar to you - a lot my friends are online.. :/ and i fell for someone online and they visited earlier this year me. unfortunately things didn't work out.. BUT no one got suspected of being a terrorist. XD

Hey, i just saw your story on australian story about half hour ago . I cant believe how stupid and unfair it was what happened. anyways i hope everything is good with -Shannon- was it?. okies Bye

yooo, i just got told about this and i fliped because shit bro, the egsact same thing just happend to my Australian Alien KidCrusher... Rapper from Down Under Booked by the Insane Clown Posse to perform in Columbus Ohio, got interrogated for 5 Hours by the Minneapolis Boarder Control over the way they were dressed, figured we were druggies.
Kicked us around, laughed at our accent, spittin in our face,, then not sending us home the way we went, but all the way around the world. check my vids
It's insane to judge people for how they look or dress. My travel agent gave me the advice to go to the states wearing a suit next time because the chances of getting in are better. What a joke.
Dude I know exactly how you feel.....The exactly the same thing happened to me and some friends a few weeks ago when heading to the UK from Brisbane. We were stopped at Heathrow because we were a band and there was a confusion with visas and were denied entry into the UK, detained for 7 hours and had all the same searches, scans, questions etc etc, and sent straight back home with security escorts and got our passports returned when we arrived back in Brisbane. Takes a little bit comprehend hey!
It's a little piece of hell ain't it? And to think I used to be pissed off when I drove to the bank and it had just closed so I had to drive home again. Puts things in perspective.
Yeah man. And what totally sucks is there is no room for negotiation, compromise or compassion. They treat us like animals. I'm all for security and searching people etc for legitimate reasons but what ever happened to "innocent until proven guilty"? They treat us as guilty immediately and even if proven innocent we're still monitored and kept under suspicion! WTF??
They're our Buddies those Americans, lol. I can see why Peter Garrett wants to allow more USA Military Bases here, then we'd be safe, you never know where the threats gunna come from. I mean when I see your vids i don't see you as a threat, but hey I'm just an average guy not some one who's trained in these matters, that's why we need these folks to keep us safe and tell us what and who to be scared from. I'm being ironic.
Talk about massive over reaction by Airport security! Unfortunately that become a more common trait. It might have helped going through Los Angeles instead of Detroit.
hey i watched ur story on Australien story last night and it sux that that happened to u, thnx to terrorists innocent ppl have to suffer like tighter security and in ur case being suspected as a suspicious person its soooo unfair
Saw your segment on the abc, and I was absolutely shocked at how you were treated by the american security forces. I'm from brissie too, but I'll think twice before travelling to america now.
It seems that the concept of america as the home of the free is pretty much dead, they have fallen to exactly the sort of tyranny that their wise founding fathers warned about.
saw Aus story, my sympathy and good luck. had similar in 1990's travelling, argued and goons came from everywhere, escorted like a crim back to plane, banned few years, NOW really dig USA, get past the goons and USA and its people arereallythe greatest of friends, cool it for a little. PS U should have said yes I am FBI and the fools would have escorted U to your friend, no ? asked.
i saw you story and confirms my view that american authorities are paranoid. they like to tell other countries what they can or cannot do, but their own society is the most decadant since the roman empire. there doesnt seem much differance between china and america at this point.
Avoid the US altogether - they put macho idiots in border security that let thru real terrorists but hold up all little old ladies and cool dudes like you chasin a little romance. You were cool on Australian story.
iam watching the australian story now and i fell your pain cause i had a girlfriends from 1 hour and half from me. bit different but i had never seen her only on myspace
Hey I just saw you on Australian Story, I'm sorry you had to go through that, it's dumbfounding that even after they have checked everything and called your contacts and found nothing wrong, they still felt the need to deport you.
Wow - this honestly amazes me. I've recently started saving for a trip to America - I've wanted to visit for as long as I can remember - with the intention of doing it solo - Now I'm worried that a potentially dream holiday could be ruined like yours was. America has taken their border security way too far and last thing I feel like doing is saving thousands and thousands of dollars only to have it wasted. Wake up US Government!
That is freakin retarded. As an American, it's kind of shameful. They won't Australians in, but we have thousands of ILLEGAL immigrants all over the US? WTF? I'm sorry man. Better luck next time. Wouldn't blame you if you didn't even want to come back here!
Yeah, the american system of trying to keep the country safe is really really fucked up. And the bad part is, it's mostly fake. But the worst part of it all is, practically anyone can walk through the Canadian-US border to the north freely, and they will never have to go through what you had to go through. There are roads that connect the US and Canada, too. The US Patriot Act needs some serious changes to it. Yes, it does add some protection, but it also protects us from the the wrong people.
I don't believe all americans are bad, they just seem to have a limited understanding of their government(i use this word loosly) and the world/solar system. It is a shame this happened to you Daniel, but im sure you have learned greatly from this experience and with the knowledge you have gained you can educate others.
If this kind of injustice can occur now i wonder what awaits under the N.A.U.
What a great comment. I'm inclined to agree with you about Americans having a limited understanding of their own government and what is going on around the world. It's not entirely their fault though since their media is one of the most "boxed in" and government controlled on the planet. I have learned much from this experience.
DrLemur - The bottom line is that those who refused your entry are aliens, why did you not go to the Indians? the land belongs to them. You are most welcome to come to Cape Town. I am a descendant of the KhoiSan/Dutch/French, I am more proud of my KhoiSan ancestry than the other. If you are worried that a "black" or "white" person may refuse your entry, then reply to this comment at least a week before landing in Cape Town.
i feel so sorry for you!!! I KNOW Canada will be better!!! Where do you plan on going?? Depending on where you land I'm sure i could help you out and tell/show you where to go!!!
you know im not sure if your from america or not, but, even in the war, if we see someone with a gun, we dont shoot until they shoot first, so if a muslim were to enter our country, who is not a citizen, we dont open fire on them just because they wear certain clothes and have a beard...get your facts straight, the government we have isnt the best, it wont destroy the planet...
Yet another ignorant person making untrue generalizations based on assumptions from media, conspiracy theory articles/videos on the 'net, etc.
If we had "valid excuses to shoot" people there'd be no prisons in the U.S. as we'd just be vigilantes, taking care of criminals ourselves rather than giving fair trials AND letting myriads of guilty people walk. ETC., shall I go on?
Make statements based on facts; there are enough of those.
Bloody shattered mate...it just boggles the mind. Yanks have lost their mind, with their bumper-sticker 'war on terror' 'homeland security' mentality. A nation led by boneheads.
Our customs have always been really nice to me and rational and I've never had any bad experiences but I figured maybe it was because I'm an Australian citizen and wondered how they would treat those that are not. They seem respectful from what I've seen on border patrol anyway.
Dude I don't know you too well but I did find out about the incident through Blunty & I sincerely would like to apologize on behalf of my country that's completly disrespectful, uncalled for & you seem like a cool-cat so it especially shouldn't have happened to you :P
I really do undertand how important that trip was to you man & I can't imagine what you went through but as we say in America "Fuck that noise!" lol.
I'm not saying my government is much better. No government should act wrongly towards any person.. Plus I would rather America had a show where their CBP officers were filmed.. at least they would be held accountable to someone.. even if it is just a stupid tv show..
It makes me sad how Americans will always refer to 9/11 when their actions are being questioned. It was a tragedy, yes. And no, it didn't happen to ME or to "my people". But that's no excuse to judge innocent people for no reason. And how many terrorist have an Australian accent? It's so messed up. I really hope you get to see America some day. More than just a prison cell.
I researched it in the sense that I covered all the bases and made sure I did and had everything that was required according to my government before departing Australia.
Your Making this Worse for Yourself trust me I know ,,Drop it the more you try to drum up support the more they have on you, ASIO Has a FILE on you ,Pull your videos now
They just have to track your IP address and find you in Melbourne...
Ha you think they don't already know all my details from when I was detained? I've done nothing wrong and I never did anything wrong. Too many people know that already. You really think the only thing I've been doing all this time is complaining on You Tube. Keep watching this space brother.
I'm actually really, really looking forward to your coming back to America, when you do, or at least hearing about it. It will be a triumphant moment, and a reassuring one.
farmerbob96: According to Wikipedia, Australia's the only continent without squirrels. A person should be able to see squirrels before they die, don't you think? :-)
They sure are cute little critters, and they inhabit any place they can find a tree. Outside my home office window and patio are a bunch of trees, so I get to watch squirrels running around and chasing each other from time to time. They sure are cute little buggers! :-)
I don't know how well they multiply, but I'd imagine they have an active love life, given all the squirrels I see around. :-)
Frankly, I can't believe there aren't any squirrels there, given how they're everywhere else on earth, and given how easily they adapt to their environment (e.g., can live in peoples' backyards, small city parks, even the trees along a city block).
I wonder if there's some sort of conspiracy to keep them out? Maybe they eat Vegemite and are a threat! :-)
Hahaha -- yeah, but don't laugh: I read that they're developing remote-controlled robots that look like small animals and insects to perform spying and other nefarious tasks. So I wouldn't be surprised if there were spy-squirrels one day, innocently perching on branches outside peoples' houses....
Sure buddy, I'm from Detroit and have friends who work at Metro for Homeland Security. I'm sure they were picking on you for no reason. They said let's Fuck with this guy and not let him in. Maybe you should be honest and tell what's in your past or who you associate with on the internet. Something came up as a red flag. Where were you going in MI?
What kinda excuse is that?! "let's Fuck with this guy and not let him in"??? Not only unprofessional, it's sheer malelovent stupidity and arrogance. Are you proud of your friends as being bullies to legitimate visitors? What's the point of this gentleman being honest, if your friends PRE-JUDGED him, and aribtrarily decided his fate?
Sorry mate, Homeland Security is fucking bollocks. It's like Dad's Army with with less comedic blundering and more xenophobia!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You've missed the point. Homeland Security Agents don't pick on people for no reason. This guy has something that he's not sharing with you. Why would they interogate someone for four hours? Because they're bored? They have a chain of command that they must answer to. Everyone that is detained has to meet a certain threat level. Don't blame the U.S., it's usually the country they come from that gives the tip. Blame the Australian government. DrLemur isn't telling you the whole truth.
You know, we could argue for ever about the policies of Homeland Security. The fact of the matter is that they deliberately mishandled THIS CASE, palmed off Dr Lemur with "oh, we're not sure. you might be a terrorist, but we're going to be a bunch of dicks and kick you out" and sent him packing.
If he were DEFINITELY a terrorist, he would have been deported and handed over to the Australian authorities.
America is becoming as insular as the USSR was. Same shit, different day.
I am telling the whole truth and if there is more there then they haven't told me because I'm unaware of it. I have a clean record. If you'd like to see the official report contact me privately and I'll send you a scanned copy.
Smittysniper: "Why would they interogate someone for four hours? Because they're bored?"
It's called "incompetence." Don't assume these people know what they're doing. They don't always. They're trained, and they're afraid of making mistakes, so they overreact to situations.
Consider the recent case of the woman who wasn't allowed to board an airplane with a nipple ring, even though she agreed to a visual inspection. They forced her to remove it before she could board. They later aplogized.
Well, at first they didn't. At first they said it was normal procedure and they acted appropriately. Then the woman got this high-powered lawyer who held a press conference and showed how needlessly painful they made her experience, etc. They still didn't apologize. But then, after a day or two, the higher-ups did. Just PR.
The point is that these people do act ridiculously at times because, well, they're just people, and they have to make judgment calls -- oftentimes wrong ones.
So true.. They are people and are not infallible. When mistakes are made they should be admitted to and then rectified. I'm not giving up until that happens.
Good for you! The problem is with bureaucracy -- the bigger it is, the more it protects itself against criticism, so as to protect and insulate itself. Right and wrong lose place to the self-protecting nature of the bureaucracy itself. And Homeland Security is one of the biggest bureaucracies around.
Which is not to say it's not possible. But don't expect to get far without a lawyer on your side, is all.
I can't say what yet publicly.. but don't worry. I have all the help I'm ever going to need on this one. :) If something can't be done with the amazing people and resources I've been offered so far then nothing ever will be done for people in similar situations to me. Trust me on that one.
Awesome! That's all I need to know, that at least you've found some help. Feel free to drop a note sometime, if you feel like it. My private e-mail address is on my YouTube channel. Good luck!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Do you know how many millions of travelers we have every day? If you had a problem, chances are there was a reason. Come clean you lying fuck. If not, tough break--nobody else has a problem.
If by nobody else you mean the dozens of others who have mailed me with similar and worse stories in the past few weeks then yeah.. nobody else has ever had a problem.. Lets all hold hands and bury our heads in the sand and pretend the world is a happy place where people are treated fairly.. douche..
elichans-While I do feel for DrLemur in what he had been put through and disagree completely with adinovo, I also can't stand people who make general assumptions about a group of people based on the acts of a few people within the group. Only if things were that simple, huh? Following my 'own' morals, I would say that such assumptions are wrong as well.
Eh, in order for you to appear on a watch list, there had to have been something(s) in your Australian arrest history for them to scrutinize. Sucks that you went through that, but if you have a history of arrests for protesing, or are vocal on the net about certain issues, well you get the direction I'm going in. You probably have the Australian government to thank for whatever they have included in your file that would have been red flagged by the USA hls branch. Cheers.
Actually no.. I'm not outspoken on any issues online and I have a clean record. Not even a speeding ticket. The thing that made them suspicious was an e-mail that mentioned box cutters that was a joke. I didn't even remember that I had received that e-mail. Was months old. There was no other evidence then this one e-mail to arouse suspicion.
Sorry bout this man raynabeth made me do it but your a cry baby boo hoo to bad so sad life goes on..... again not me her she twisted my arm on this one good luck with it though i feel for ya
I like raynabeth.. I just found it ever so slightly annoying to save for a year.. go all the way to America and then be sent home without getting to see the place. I'm sorry if it bothers people that I express that annoyance for a few minutes..
Yeah it's definitely a shame. Hopefully things will change someday. There is being careful.. and being stupid.. it's important to know the difference. Some people don't unfortunately.. and some officers shouldn't be in a job..
I'm so sorry you went through this. My country makes me so ashamed. I've been arrested here at a demonstration and it is bullshit. Glad you're home safe.
VK's right, you are hansome, and remind me of my son, Rustin. I went to this doctor once, who "checked" me, for what, I dont know...when I was preg- it felt HORRIBLE, and looking back, it was unneccesary- It leaves one with a violated feeling that lasts for, like, a couple hours!
For every Australian we keep out, we let in three Egyptians. Ha ha. I read Naomi Wolf's book, "The End of America, a Letter of Warning To a Young Patriot;" There's a Canadian fellow who was held and tortured a while before we let him go. Don't feel too bad, dude, there are 75,000 people who are on the terror watch list. Did you by any chance say anything derogatory about Dick Cheney while you were in customs? So sorry you were treated this way. It's not the way to treat our friends.
i don't know if this helps with the humor or not, it may be too soon. Two years ago the Chairman of Qantas was detained for interrogation at LA Intl Airport. She had drawings of airplane plans. That's why they detained her.
"The guy said 'Why have you got all of this?'" she told the Melbourne Herald Sun. "And I said, 'I'm the chairman of an airline. I'm the chairman of Qantas.' And he said to her, 'But you're a woman.'"

WTF??

Saw your segment on the abc, and I was absolutely shocked at how you were treated by the american security forces. I'm from brissie too, but I'll think twice before travelling to america now.
It seems that the concept of america as the home of the free is pretty much dead, they have fallen to exactly the sort of tyranny that their wise founding fathers warned about.

Wake up US Government!
tter85 3 years ago
That is freakin retarded. As an American, it's kind of shameful. They won't Australians in, but we have thousands of ILLEGAL immigrants all over the US? WTF? I'm sorry man. Better luck next time. Wouldn't blame you if you didn't even want to come back here!
Bourne2bwild1989 3 years ago
Yeah, the american system of trying to keep the country safe is really really fucked up. And the bad part is, it's mostly fake. But the worst part of it all is, practically anyone can walk through the Canadian-US border to the north freely, and they will never have to go through what you had to go through. There are roads that connect the US and Canada, too. The US Patriot Act needs some serious changes to it. Yes, it does add some protection, but it also protects us from the the wrong people.
zachgband 3 years ago
I don't believe all americans are bad, they just seem to have a limited understanding of their government(i use this word loosly) and the world/solar system. It is a shame this happened to you Daniel, but im sure you have learned greatly from this experience and with the knowledge you have gained you can educate others.
If this kind of injustice can occur now i wonder what awaits under the N.A.U.
Pathogen82 3 years ago 2

Make statements based on facts; there are enough of those.

farmerbob96: According to Wikipedia, Australia's the only continent without squirrels. A person should be able to see squirrels before they die, don't you think? :-)
nrgins 3 years ago 2
I know I sure as hell would like to see a squirrel before I die nrgin :)
DrLemur 3 years ago
*sniff* well, I pray you do, DrLemur! :-)
They sure are cute little critters, and they inhabit any place they can find a tree. Outside my home office window and patio are a bunch of trees, so I get to watch squirrels running around and chasing each other from time to time. They sure are cute little buggers! :-)
nrgins 3 years ago
well post a mating couple over and i'll breed them up 8) do they multiply like rabbits?
farmerbob96 3 years ago
I don't know how well they multiply, but I'd imagine they have an active love life, given all the squirrels I see around. :-)
Frankly, I can't believe there aren't any squirrels there, given how they're everywhere else on earth, and given how easily they adapt to their environment (e.g., can live in peoples' backyards, small city parks, even the trees along a city block).
I wonder if there's some sort of conspiracy to keep them out? Maybe they eat Vegemite and are a threat! :-)
nrgins 3 years ago
Ah-ha Squirrels are behind al-queda, we aussies know what's what
farmerbob96 3 years ago 4

Smittysniper 3 years ago
What kinda excuse is that?! "let's Fuck with this guy and not let him in"??? Not only unprofessional, it's sheer malelovent stupidity and arrogance. Are you proud of your friends as being bullies to legitimate visitors? What's the point of this gentleman being honest, if your friends PRE-JUDGED him, and aribtrarily decided his fate?
Sorry mate, Homeland Security is fucking bollocks. It's like Dad's Army with with less comedic blundering and more xenophobia!
chumbayaa 3 years ago

You've missed the point. Homeland Security Agents don't pick on people for no reason. This guy has something that he's not sharing with you. Why would they interogate someone for four hours? Because they're bored? They have a chain of command that they must answer to. Everyone that is detained has to meet a certain threat level. Don't blame the U.S., it's usually the country they come from that gives the tip. Blame the Australian government. DrLemur isn't telling you the whole truth.
Smittysniper 3 years ago
You know, we could argue for ever about the policies of Homeland Security. The fact of the matter is that they deliberately mishandled THIS CASE, palmed off Dr Lemur with "oh, we're not sure. you might be a terrorist, but we're going to be a bunch of dicks and kick you out" and sent him packing.
If he were DEFINITELY a terrorist, he would have been deported and handed over to the Australian authorities.
America is becoming as insular as the USSR was. Same shit, different day.
chumbayaa 3 years ago 2
I am telling the whole truth and if there is more there then they haven't told me because I'm unaware of it. I have a clean record. If you'd like to see the official report contact me privately and I'll send you a scanned copy.
DrLemur 3 years ago
Smittysniper: "Why would they interogate someone for four hours? Because they're bored?"
It's called "incompetence." Don't assume these people know what they're doing. They don't always. They're trained, and they're afraid of making mistakes, so they overreact to situations.
Consider the recent case of the woman who wasn't allowed to board an airplane with a nipple ring, even though she agreed to a visual inspection. They forced her to remove it before she could board. They later aplogized.
nrgins 3 years ago 2
At least they apologized.. It's more then I got :)
DrLemur 3 years ago
Well, at first they didn't. At first they said it was normal procedure and they acted appropriately. Then the woman got this high-powered lawyer who held a press conference and showed how needlessly painful they made her experience, etc. They still didn't apologize. But then, after a day or two, the higher-ups did. Just PR.
The point is that these people do act ridiculously at times because, well, they're just people, and they have to make judgment calls -- oftentimes wrong ones.
nrgins 3 years ago
So true.. They are people and are not infallible. When mistakes are made they should be admitted to and then rectified. I'm not giving up until that happens.
DrLemur 3 years ago
Good for you! The problem is with bureaucracy -- the bigger it is, the more it protects itself against criticism, so as to protect and insulate itself. Right and wrong lose place to the self-protecting nature of the bureaucracy itself. And Homeland Security is one of the biggest bureaucracies around.
Which is not to say it's not possible. But don't expect to get far without a lawyer on your side, is all.
Speaking of which, any luck with the ACLU?
nrgins 3 years ago 2
I can't say what yet publicly.. but don't worry. I have all the help I'm ever going to need on this one. :) If something can't be done with the amazing people and resources I've been offered so far then nothing ever will be done for people in similar situations to me. Trust me on that one.

Cheers.

Don't feel too bad, dude, there are 75,000 people who are on the terror watch list. Did you by any chance say anything derogatory about Dick Cheney while you were in customs? i don't know if this helps with the humor or not, it may be too soon.
