The music is awesome!!!! Perfect for Star Trek. And even better while Sulu backs her right out the door!!!! The Search for Spock is my favorite original Star Trek movie
The beggining strings are copied directly from Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, Act 1, scenes 6 and 7 (the fight). I love this piece, but I bet James Horner was looking for an excuse to steal that one
interesting!! the first 20 seconds have a very very close resemblance to the ballet music from Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet - only with the violin scrambling even faster.
This is probably one of the best film scores of all time, twok comes second, especially the part when the legendary kirk goes warp speed! I never understood why he didn't get nominated for any awards for his ST scores?
I must have seen this movie a hundred times. You notice the music somewhat, but this video without the words and only the music, shows what a genius James Horner is.
Absolutely love scottys facial expression as kirk issues the warp speed order, right after hes warned hel be demoted. This scene sums up everything thats sacred about Star Trek-a chemistry among characters and, in turn, actors that can only be achieved by working together for 40 years. I fear the new crop will struggle to attain this cameradery. In a strange way that gives me comfort.
This entire section was great! I love this part of the movie. Just really fills me with excitment! Kirk saying "The answer is no we are therefore going anyway."
Ever been to a Star Trek All Night Marathon in a cinema? I have, I watched from the first movie to Star Trek - The Undiscovered Country. It was fantastic, lots of fellow trekkies emerged the next afternoon blinking at the sunlight, tired but happily Treked out. If there's one thing I'd love to do before I shuck off this mortal coil, it would be to organise a Trek Marathon for charity at a good cinema. How many films can you watch at one go without falling asleep? ; )
@LoriCiani I have... and it was wonderful. Truth be told i was pretty treked out by number 4 and by the end of 6 i was well over it... but I'd do it again :)
@timefilm Not in cinema, but back when Star Trek VI first came out on VHS, we had an all-night Trek party where we watched the 6 films. Pizza, Root Beer and Star Trek-it doesn't get any better than that for me and my friends back then!
@vp21ct ...Let's say...I took cat naps during that one. Well, by that point the matchstick eyelid supports kept failing and the caffine feed had lost it's buzz. : D
Look for videos on youtube under Empire Leicester Square laser show or visit Freds channel fp70e hes the former projectionist of UCI and has some fine videos
The THX laser show video is must rare one when sitting in at Empire 20 years ago that sadly was retired around late 1990s some say it broke down and was too costly to replace the cold laser machine.
Enough to still remember it from 20 years agothis was like benchmark JBL THX certification that was not even second to none, there wasnt another single large cinema in the UK at the time that, could even equal the Empire.
Another thing, Im still tripping of the Dolby mix on Bluray today its as close to the 70mm Dolby experience 20 years ago. I urge most of you kiddies if you see Star Trek playing in 70mm at special showing thou very rare today, Id beam your butts over there at warp speed, especially in a THX certified cinema.
The part were Sulu flips the security guard over, even that came in like a HUGE JOLT SLAM in the Empire that kinder felt real. The music beating deeply at 0:39 was like pumping effect on my body.
The stealing the Enterprise in 70mm THX at the Empire just went nuts fucking sheer total nuts on the bass and sub bass track that pressed into my body and the space dock doors SLAM KICK opening was like the real thing! It sounded so believable. The score following the Enterprise has she backed outwards just SLAMED into my chest and stomach with sharp within the 40Hz range. It was clarity that would beat most home theatre basements many times over.
You have no idea but after seeing Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 70mm six-track Dolby stereo SR (SS) JBL THX! I booked a ticket for October 8th 1989 when I saw Star Trek marathon being advertised at the box office after I saw first showing "Last Crusade" which I saw twice second viewing I saw for free because I travailed all the way from Bournemouth to London, plus I was trainee projectionist for UCI at the time.
Ticket only cost £10.00 pounds now you work that out for 5 Star Trek films in not just any THX the THX at the Empire was like seating near to loudspeaker that is playing mildly yet feeling the detail strengths of the frequency response 20 metes back!
Each Star Trek film score at the Empire Leicester Square Star Trek marathon Sunday October 8th 1989 in 70mm got punchier and punchier with wild dynamic range that was full blast octave to octave without lacking any strength just mighty powerful chest thumping clarity that went beyond the lowest rumbling soundtrack. Wow well not forget that JBL 13KW THX 70mm Dolby stereo experience, it was out of this world!
James Horner is one of the great geniuses of film music. I can always tell his scores because he has a definitive style. Other great film music composers are John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith (RIP), Danny Elfman, Lalo Schifrin, Michael Kamen...I could go on...check these guys out! They all have material on YouTube!
No, the ship WAS 20 years old in trek 3. the ship in star trek 1 was a re-fit of the old ship, and thus it was all new. it had new nacelles and a fully re-furbished inside. It was to be retired to make way for a more advanced fleet of new ships.
agreed, Horner was an absolute genius with his scores for ST 2 and ST 3; every moment was spot on musically and gave meaning to what was happening on screen!!
Plus, the original Enterprise was old when Kirk originally captained it in the original series. It was established that another man (Pike) was captain of the ship for probably at least 5 years if not more. Roddenberry also suggested there was a captain even before HIM. So already the enterprise was older when Kirk first had it, then add the years in between the series and the films (Kirk as captain and then becoming admiral) and the number starts to get up there.
In fact, you can even look around and see it is suggested that the Enterprise (including its pre-refit days) is far older than 20 years. It may be even closer to 40. The admiral may have used 20 as that had been about the amount of years that passed since the production of the original series and this film. So it's not really clear what exact age the enterprise is at this point but it is likely more than 20 years. Keep in mind that even US navy vessels are designed and built to last MANY years.
The Refit was significant though, a complete redesign, it was effectively a new ship internally as well as structurally. I think the admiral's suggestion of the ship being 20 years old was effectively meaningless because i don't think any of the original design remained.
No, Roddenberry objected to the animated show being canon, so it isn't. Of course, if something from the cartoon is used in a live action show or movie...then it becomes canon!
@planetiowa - Well ill tell you something about Roddenberry, rest his soul, the man wanted ALL trek to be like 'the cage' and 'star trek 1'. He wasn't happy with the direction of trek 2 and even had issues with trek 6. He created next gen to get his ideals back. The animated series was produced and written by trek writers and featured original cast voices - to me, it's canon enough in it's own right
Gene believed that only he could cast a "Trek" show. As far as canon goes, Roddenberry didn't like things in the animated show, such as the oxygen-providing forcefields. He felt the backward-aging people weren't believable, either.
Horner's music is IMO, the best scores out of all the movies. It goes beyond just having a theme song, the music tells a story, and engages you in it as the listener.
heh and the officer kirk talked with in spacedock thinks the NCC-1701A is 20 years old lolz i mean does that also mean most of the other versions of the Enteprise (including the ST11 version) are around that age too?
The NCC-1701A is NOT 20 years old. In fact, it is never mentioned in the films where the ship came from or how old it is, whether it was simply an existing ship that was renamed or an entirely new one. The ship in this film, however, is not technically the A. It is supposed to the be the same ship from the original series that had been "upgraded" so to speak. The A looks like this ship because it was cheaper to reuse the "refitted" model.
New ranking after having seen 11: 2,8,6,4,3,7,11,10,9,1,5. 11 was not Star Trek. It was full of action and nice special effects that appeal to the general public, but you can only explain away so many inaccuracies with the altered timeline. Leonard Nimoy and the bad guy were good. But Spock's love interest with Uhura? Chekov present from the beginning? Kirk going from academy grad to Captain in 1 movie, leapfrogging Spock, Sulu, Chekov, and Uhura who were already part of the crew? Please!
You know what ST1 was good a bit slow but it was good, as for ST5 man just get off of Shatner's ass already move on if you know anything about star trek than you would know that it was paramount's fault for cutting Shatner's budget he did not get the help he needed like nimoy did. ILM was busy so Shatner had to use a Lesser special effects team. The Original ST movies were 100% better than the crappy next Generation films. And the next generation had more money to mess with.....
true lolz but the original star trek movies missed out some stuff lolz :) like the ablity for TOS constitutions and possibly TMP to perform saucer seperations like the TNG ships lolz.
The scene in ST6 leaving spacedock at one-quarter impulse power was also scored very well. But I agree Horner can make watching paint dry or water boil exciting.
Trek 1 is possibly the greatest sci-fi film compared to the likes of '2001' ... but sure it's a dull trek film actioner. as for trek 5. it's really not THAT bad. it's just badly directed and cheaply made. the original script and the novel are amazing!
I appreciate your comments. I've seen both 1 & 5 several times. There are things I like about them. 1 is too long and boring - it's just not my taste. 1's soundtrack was excellent. I was really disappointed in 5 - many many mistakes and inconsistencies, and as you know the special effects were not done by ILM (at the time, ILM was the only good choice for a space movie). Also, when you look for God led by some crazy half-brother of Spock who never existed before, and you don't find God...
I've always preferred Horner's Star Trek to Goldsmith or Courage. Everyone remembers his stellar work on Khan but his work on III is really underrated. Thank you for posting.
6:22, the BEST PART EVER. It just sounds like a defiant/proud "HA HA" to everyone from the Enterprise. I remember, as a little kid, rewinding the VHS dozens of times just to listen to that part. Gives me shivers up me spine.
Wow what can I say, though I prefer Wrath of Khan, this soundtrack still has those Horner elements that make you stand up and listen.. I love your work timefilm... much appreciated...
I overwhelmingly agree with your opinion on Horner's contribution to this film. Thank you for posting these timefilm! Shows you how much the music can add to the scene!

Only James Horner could make one-quarter impulse power so exciting!!

3:58 sends shivers down my spine. The reversing through the bay doors part is brilliant. Horner is a legend.
