Great video quality. I am surprised the helmsman is not clipped on. With mounting seas, a MOB would be difficult to spot especially as it would take precious minutes to turn the yacht around and difficult if the crew on board have limited heavy weather experience.
It's always better to avoid them - it isn't a pleasent environment to be in!
The biggest risk would be losing your mast which is why you run before the wind on a "broad reach" such that the wind is almost directly behind you. I wasn't worried about the boat at all, ripping sails and falling overboard are bigger dangers.
We were heading east - from the Caribean back to England. The video was taken end of May or the beginning of June (we arrived back in the UK 8th June 2007).
Yes, absolutely. We were running before the wind which makes it a whole lot less frantic. Scary when we were pushed/blown side on - then you were reminded of just how windy it was. We were well out to sea, so the waves were big "rollers" rather than being choppy. A force 8 in the English Channel (for example) is lot rougher!
We're about to do this trip as well from Bermuda to Europe also in a Sun Odyssey - although a 45.2 - wondering what sail configuration you had up (if you remember) - the boat seems to be nice and steady - not rolling too much given the confused sea state and cross swells. Nice Vid!
what I like about the video is how he was able to capture the noise of the sea. In most of these videos all you hear is the wind on the microphone. Great vid!
Good job , looks like fun. Also the clip is 1:09, the comment about looking behind you all the time is frankly bollox, he's not reversing his car. It takes cajones to sail in seas like this and more importantly experience, this man is doing a good job on that swell.
Good clip but... while sailing downwind he should be looking back very often! And he isn't looking at all! How can he sail well without searching the danger which comes from the back of the yacht?!
I'm not talking about the wave which is actually under the yacht. I'm talking about the wave which is about to cover the yacht and when you have to set your yacht perpendicularly to the wave. If you don't do this, a wave can put the yacht upside down or make it balancing too much and break the mast. This is actually the biggest danger so it's better to wacht your back when the wind is blowing from there.
It is never totally completely black so you can still see the waves to some degree. However, you are re-acting to what the boat is doing, not what the waves look like - you feel it. Obviously it is more difficult at night though, because you can be taken by surprise.
Oh be quite. Everyone almost, on this site just spews out their opinions in hopes of getting attention. YOU post a video of you doing the same thing then talk... other than that you're just the fat ass on the couch during a football game spouting off what the Q-B should have done!
Wind was definely force 8 (35 knots+). We were running before it (i.e. wind behind us - a "broad reach") as is the accepted method in such situations, which is why the wind looks less dramatic than it would if it were across our bow. We were doing something like 15 knots water speed as the boat surfed down the waves. Trust me, when we were turned side-on by a wave (and my pour helming) the full force of the wind was very much in evidence.
even if it wasn t a force 8, I bet most of you guys haven t even been on the Atlantic, so "sddingsdale", don t worry, it s great video.
on a atlantic force 8, I d probably wish to be on a different boat ;-)
sail safe and keep life belted ;-)

Beaufort Scale Force 8:
Moderately high waves with breaking crests forming spindrift. Streaks of foam.

I read your comment and thought you must be wrong - but it certainly appears that you are right: I wasn't clipped on. Shame on me!

Is a boat like this built for thes kind of conditions or is it better to stay away from them?

Does the wheel turn a rudder or a sail? Yes, this is a nice video.

Once I got the hang of sailing at night I actually preferred it. Your eyes can play tricks and mess with your concentration, but "feel" is true.

No horizon? What do you expect 700 miles from land? To be honest I only posted the video to share it with friends.
