It's a compelling speech, even for someone predisposed to be critical. But she seems to want Muslims to speak out as Muslims (eg. To oppose the war because the war involves their co-religionists,) and yet not be criticised for that very reasoning. She promotes communalism, sectarianism, by asking people to act, not as people, but as part of an identity-group.
Reading these posts is interesting. On the one hand, there is criticism of reactionary Islamists, which is a pleasant surprise. On the other, there's the claim that criticism of Islam per se amounts to racism - though, presumably, only if you're of a non-Muslim background. I hear humanists critiscise Christianity all the time, and while I don't much like it I fail to see why Islam should be beyond criticism.
I cannot be bothered watching this, but just to pick up on one or two recent comments, you don't have to be Islamic to have a judgment of Homosexuality.
Btw. islamophobia doesn't focus on the SKIN colors of the people it's criticizing, but cultural aspects. Therefore, racism is not necessarily involved. But it's sometimes coupled with racist, neo-nazi views.
Sure, islamophobia does not *perport* to be about race, but I think it is, because everyone in the world knows that muslims are predominantly arabs and africans, not white europeans, and everyone knows that racism has been discredited as an ideology, so of course people like to think that their fear and loathing for muslims has nothing to do with race, but it is telling how many people who are islamophobic also have a profound distaste for people they deem to be different from them.
Now of course people shouldn't be attacked or discrimated against for simply being Muslims !!! I have not, nor would ever defend such behaviour!
But it's perfectly legitimate to debate Islam, and some of the extreme reactionary, homophobic and sexist statements within the Koran and Hadiths that Mullahs in the middle east use to oppress their people ever more.
You are so desperate to appear "anti-racist" that you have completely lost track of the subject. You need to stop being so scared.
You are the one who is scared, my friend. You are the islamophobe, not me. You may say that you are not discriminating, but that is a lie. You are here on a video about not discriminating against BRITISH muslims, ranting about the evils of sharia law. Again, I would remind you that the only islamic countries where sharia law is used in an oppressive fashion are fascist dictatorships, and you think it's all about religion? And furthermore you think this has relevance to the topic at hand?
Ok, I will grant that it is possible to find fault with many islamic countries, where the government uses sharia law and brute force to oppress the population. It does not necessarily mean you are a racist or a bigot to take issue with the many human rights abuses and abuse of women in some of these countries, but it is very important to criticize the regimes and people involved, and not to do exactly what they would like you to do, and that is to give them a pass and blame their religion.
What do you mean you will "grant" me that it is possible to find fault with many Islamic Countries ? I don't need to be granted that obvious right ! What do you possibly mean that it "does not necessarily mean you are a racist of a bigot to take issue with the human rights abuses"?! How can you be a racist or a bigot for discussing human rights abuses ! In Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia and Iran, you receive the death penalty for leaving the religion of Islam, and homosexuals are....
I was not talking to you, you disgusting bigot. I was talking to someone else who is more reasonable and who actually seemed to be making legitimate criticisms. You are just demonizing muslims on a video about not abusing muslims because of their religion. It does not matter to you that the places where these abuses are taking place are fascist dictatorships, the only thing that matters to you is that you must justify your hate for people who aren't like you.
Crikey that's 3 posts of bile. I suspected you were the type that resorts to childish, ignorant insults. And out it came - the chant of Islamaphobe. How pathetic you are. I looked at your profile - 38 years old, I honestly thought it would have been 16.
If you manage to construe that criticism of Sharia Law, is "demonising" Muslims, and "islamophobic", then it is you that is the disgusting bigot.
I really pity you, because at 38 years old, you sound just like a confused 16 year old.
You don't get it, do you? What does your criticism of saudi arabia and certain other arab governments have to do with this subject? Could you tell me that? Here's a thought, why don't you go to a video about the holocaust and start issuing blanket condemnations of judaism or judaic law? I'm sure you could find something bad in there somewhere to condemn, and see how people react. Israel is currently committing war crimes against palestinians, would you like to blame that on their religion?
..actually read my post, you would have said that I am completely against discriminating against Muslims, for no reason than that they are Muslims.
Sadly it's people like you who completely devalue the word "Islamaphobic", because you really don't have any idea what it actually means, you just throw it at anyone like a child calls someone in an argument "gay" - it simply becomes a meaningless childish phrase.
I am completely against the parts of the Koran and Hadiths that are sexist...
Well then, my friend, you're commenting in the WRONG place. Your simple condemnations of sharia law might be totally valid in some places, let's say if there's a video about sharia law, or a video about how great saudi arabia is, then you go right ahead and post your criticisms and no one will think ill of you -- but when you post such remarks in response to the simple statement that muslims should not be discriminated against, then your true motives are exposed.
No, I never forgot that. I don't have to sit by and be silent while someone comments on a video about discriminating against muslims by demonizing them and trying to prove that sharia law is evil and is taking over britain. I would not want someone demonizing me that way if I was a minority in a country that had a rising right wing movement, would you? I think you would want someone like me to stand up and defend you before it's too late.
And by the way, you can call names all you want, but you have yet to answer any of my questions to you, why is that? Can't you just admit that you don't like muslims because of their religion, or condemn islamophobia and discrimination against muslims in britain, which is all this video is really about! They're not advocating sharia law, they're advocating treating muslims in a humane way, and apparently you have a problem with that.
...discriminatory and homophobic, and any sane thinking person would be too. I would be against the same parts whatever belief / religion they may be part of.
Unfortunately, for uneducated people like you, you are completely unequipped mentally to seperate the two, and instead resort to ludicrous name calling to mask the fact that you simply cannot have a proper debate on the subject.
As I said before,I really pity you, given you are 38 years old, yet sound just like a child.
Not ALL muslims should be defended, such as the reactionary islamists. Doing so would just be cultural relativism and political correctness, fueling more rightwing fires than already. We've already seen the consequences of the left's lack of will to recognize the reactionism in many islamic currents and feudalistic middle east village cultures.
You had better be careful, however, to criticize actions and attitudes, and not religions and races. It is certainly a good idea to point out the dangers of extremism, but you should never say or imply in any way that there is something wrong with islam because some muslims are extremists, or say (like I have heard many people say) that tolerant, reasonable muslims simply don't understand their own religion.
Races!?? Where am I criticizing races in that post?
Since I started my post stating not all muslims should be defended, it presupposes I don't view all muslims as reactionary either.
I would say that the basis of Islam is extremely reactionary though. And that is due to the lack of reformation of the Quran. The Quran is on the same stage as the Bible's old testamente.
That does, however, not mean peaceful muslims are deluded. There are muslims seeking reformation of the Quran, like reformislam
Sure, sharia law as it is written is outdated, it's 1400 years old! There are laws on the books all over the US that are almost as backward, and they usually are not enforced, and in any somewhat modern islamic country, the more draconian laws (which were actually quite liberal for their time -- 1400 years ago) are not enforced. No one is going to chop your hand off for stealing in turkey, for instance.
I don't think its amazing, I think it's filled with self-indulgent anger, designed to satisfy an audience who simply want to be told how oppressed they are.
She's only saying that hating muslims because of their religion is wrong! What's so wrong with that? Muslims in britain are not trying to impose sharia law on anyone, they're not trying to punish people for not being muslims, they just want the same chance at a decent life that you have. Why can't you bring yourself to simply state that they should not be attacked or discriminated against simply because they are muslims?
....relentlessly persecuted by the state. It is illegal to be homosexual. Just those two things alone, the complete lack of religious freedom and complete lack of freedom for sexuality should be outright condemned by all right-thinking people.
Unfortunately, they get these rules from Sharia Law, which is drawn from the Koran and the Hadiths. These medievil, backwards, oppressive laws are set in stone, and the religious leaders in these countries force this Islamic law upon their people....
Again, sharia law is only used in an oppressive fashion in fascist dictatorships. The muslim countries which have any degree of democracy do not use sharia law in a backward fashion. What you fail to comprehend is that islam is NOT set in stone, and it is NOT one little thing you can easily pass judgement on. What you also fail to comprehend is that demonizing the religion of any person is essentially the same as demonizing them, you can't hate a person's core beliefs without hating them.
Your repeated, insistent condemnations of the entire islamic faith, based on the actions of certain authoritarian governments (which could be overthrown by the people any time), and your insistence that all muslims are the same, and that islam is "set in stone" and somehow evil -- on a video about discrimination against british muslims -- make your true feelings clear. You are an islamophobic bigot, you hate and/or fear muslims, admit it, or go ahead and condemn islamophobia.
n8glenn, listen to yourself. It's becoming past a joke. You accuse me of "repeated, insistent condemnations of the entire islamic faith" - I have done no such thing, & it's comments like that just simply show you are completely inadequate at debating a subject like this.
You say that I insist that all Muslims are the same, which makes me wonder if you even bother reading what people write before you begin frothing at the mouth writing the same tired cliched boring drivel.
You aren't fooling anybody. You showed up on a video about discrimination against british muslims, repeatedly posting the same criticisms of sharia law, as if that had anything to do with the subject at hand. Why is it that when someone complains about discrimination against muslims, your natural response is to complain about sharia law? I know you won't answer that question, but I'll ask again anyway.
Actually my comment on this particular video was about this woman. She isn't simply saying "discrimination against Muslims is bad" - she embarked on a vicious attack on British society, portraying it as outright racist all across the board against Muslims. Her generalised, prejudiced attack on the whole fabric of our wonderfully tolerant society is disgraceful.
There are racist / prejudiced people in every kind of race / creed / group all across the world.
I think you're taking her comments a little too personally. She is not condemning british society, she's condemning the islamophobia and racism which IS becoming more prevalent, if the recent electoral victories of the BNP are any guide. It doesn't mean british people are bad, or that the entire british society is bad.
As someone who (a) lives in Britain, (b) grew up in a multi-racial, and multicultural area in Britain, and (c) has heard this woman speak many times before, I can assure you that the characteristics she applies to Britain are completely exaggerated, give a completely unfair portrayal, and is dangerous in that it tells one group of people things that are designed to enrage them.
I can assure you that she is not enraging muslims, the US is enraging muslims. If anything, she's giving lie to the idea that all westerners are the same and should be hated.
...is trying to slam down this false idea that British society is racist and bigotted.
Now it's people like her that will scream the word racism and islamophobe at someone who rightly criticises the sexist and homophobic parts within the teachings of Islam.
I simply state those parts of Islam that I find totally vile, to show that it is completely justified to be able to criticise Islam without being called a "racist" as ignorant people like this provocative woman would do.
Context is important, and we both know that there is no shortage of people criticizing islam and muslims. They are the most misunderstood and demonized group on the face of the earth! Again, she is not condemning britain, she is standing up for people who are regularly being attacked and ridiculed in the media and by government ministers. Again, if you want to go to a video about the holocaust and criticize the talmud, you'd better be careful, because context is important.
Do what you want, but don't ask me to approve of homosexuality. Homosexuality is disgusting and immoral. As Muslims we don't care what other people think about our beliefs. You can do and believe whatever you want, but it's really none of your business what other people believe.
Excellent analysis and statement of what needs to be done.
I am an atheist and anti-zionist. But will 100% defend Muslims and Jews against fascists, racism and media attempts to demonise them either because of Israeli or Islamist terrorism.
My disagreement with any religious bigotry is irrelavent in comparison to the much greater threat posed by racism. This divides us - it makes us all more vulnerable and is the life blood of the fascist BNP.
@mutattu I agree with you, racism sucks. People who make racist jokes around should be thankful because the Jews and Muslims just does peaceful assembly instead of insulting back.
Let me get this straight, you did not condemn the islamic faith? Does that mean that you think the islamic faith is ok? There's one more question you won't answer.
