Damn... That was exactly how I felt the last time I tried to take my life... My Mom+Dad and all 5 of my siblings never told me they loved me throughout all my life and I am 25 years old right now. So i lived all those years on my own... I did the exact same thing, stood on the edge of a cliff, contemplated life... then thought... I've suffered 1/4 of my life... and lived through it... if I live to be 100... I will, because... you're not worth it... you're not worth my life... I'll live it for me
I think anyone who comments negatively /argues about this scene should really reconsider. This is not about anything other then exploring the "meaning of it all". As a person who has "stood at the edge of the cliff" and asked the same question...this scene and indeed movie spoke volumes. NO ONE knows what is right or wrong, it is for each individual person to desipher for themselves. Glad the movie clip was put up, lovely. Thank you, I love the music too x
@project17productions he did turn his back on god before he saw the butterfly..THEN he came back to god... not everyones had that butterfly moment., and I don't care so much for the butterfly scene, and for those saying he cut off the best part where he sees the butterfly...Maybe this is the part that spoke to him, maybe he still feels abandonned...AND to be fair reincarnation isnt part of the Christian cycle..so it wouldn't be your all loving non compassionate let kids starve in africa god here
Way to go, cutting the clip to make Robin Williams look like he's completely turning his back on God in the scene... you left out the best part of the whole clip, when he sees the butterfly.
Now we all know, that this was cut just to let things seem that Robin Williams didn't think God was worth it. But I've seen this clip before, and this most certainly all that Robin had to say. He saw that butterfly, and so did you.
I love this movie, and I love this scene. I do not believe in god, though. But I believe that there is some greater force, something that we could never begin to wrap our little brains around. You can feel it sometimes, like with this butterfly.
No matter how much people say they don't believe, we all need God in the darkest corners of our life's, and we will all, at some point, turn to him. Whether it be to ask, question or rant, we've all done it. Peace out.
Everyone believes because they can and want to. That is what you hope for and want to believe in. In all honesty though, why are we the species that has a god. We are so full of ourselves. Each and everyone of us. If their was a god, why has nobody come back from the dead to tell us about him. I dont mind the belief, but Churches piss me off. "Come praise the lord, get friends to come. Let me brainwash my beliefs into ur beliefs. Also I need my paycheck by Friday." Very relgious let me tell you
Maybe you guys have missed the point .When things get heavy in life ,as Patch experienced and we too experience ,one seeks out the reasoning behind one's own existence and yes one's own worth,as we all do.Innocent children starve to death on any given day and on that same day some evil ingrate will win the $200 million lottery.Neither occurence can truly negate the existence of God.But compassion would be in question.
everyone has the right to believe that God exists or he doesn't. As a Christian i believe that Christ is God in flesh. When you look at this world, the beauty of this world such as at the beginning of the movie with the mountains and sky, how can you truly say in your heart, there is no God and we are here by accident. Well for the earth to be here something happened and something had to cause it. You can't get something from nothing. Without God why are we even here on this planet in 2009?
I agree. What happened to the butterfly, and how that changed his perspective entirely? God speaks to each of us personally, leaving His indelible print on His private message.
The thing about god is that he exists for thoes who believe in him, am not a believer myself for many reasons I won't go into. but faith does seem to play a big part in the lives of thoes who partake in it.
as a believer. God has revealed himself to us in plenty of ways. Just look around at this world at the creation and do you believe that it's just an accident? Just to let you know you can't get something from nothing! God has revealed himself through Christ and therefor what else must he do to make you beleive? That is where Faith comes in.
I would just like to say that this man is amazing--it does not matter what part he plays he does it to the fullest. He is wonderful and all of his messages are heart felt so listen and learn. Just watch The Birdcage very hilarious!! Suggest watching it. God Bless You Robin!!
The evidence of a creator is all around you. Your own emotions of hate, sadness, joy, etc are proof of a creator and such emotions conflict with a belief that you are here by chance and there is no absolute right and wrong. I hope your heart will be softened to see the truth.
Sure we can go our own way. "all we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned everyone to their own way. and the lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. "
He didn't have to mention he's an atheist, and he sure didn't have to say he's absolutely sure there's no God. So he expressed himself and I expressed myself. That's all there is to it.
There IS a God. The Christian religion does not approve killing. It's against it. Murder and wars are all caused by the people who misuse religion. Such as religious extremists. Fact is, there would still be wars even if religion didn't exist, but religion isn't the one at fault. Nowhere in the bible does it state that we should be having wars.
In fact, many historians even credit the Early Christian Church as being partly responsible for the fall of the Roman Empire, because they WOULD NOT FIGHT.. EVER. I wouldn't go as far as those historians, but I often wonder what the world would be like if even a large FRACTION of us Christians were to live today as those 1st gen Christians did in the book of Acts.
Awesome movie, It was Robin William's best next to Good Will Hunting, I thought that it was more than what was expected. One of his best, very humble approach and depressing but that is life. A great reflection of truth to life.
God "rested" on the seventh day and has never stopped resting for the last 13 billion years. Lazy fuck. Any "God" who would choose the lying, thieving jews is a lowdown dirty old sick-minded bastard.
For anyone who sees this video and thinks that it's foolish, or that God doesn't exist...I disagree, partially. Yes, I'm agnostic. But this scene in the movie (and especially the monarch right after) really spoke to me. I didn't view it as religious. I viewed it as a man who feels abandoned, betrayed by his 'Creator'. A man who feels like he has nothing left, and then realizes that he has everything left, can still fulfill his dream, and that dying would be pointless.
brilliant point well made, abandoned and betrayed by our creator Im sure we have all felt like this. Its even sung in psalms where people cry out lord why have you forsaken me. Its funny how realisation sets in when you see the plan, in order to truely appreciate love you have to experience a hate, in order to appreciate life you must first have to have suffered a loss, question is at who's expense
@KyoSohma221 Well in reality there is no RIGHT or WRONG. For instance, if you take a baby and grow them up in a forest without any human species they wouldn't understand RIGHT or WRONG. Example: If he was hungry and was looking for food and another human being came out of no where and tried to steal his rabbit he would kill them without blinking an eye. Society and culture create RIGHT and WRONG. Not only do they create right and wrong but it will influence the way you think..bottomline.
Left out the most important part. When the butterfly lands on the bag and then flys onto his shirt. This was the message from the spirt to the heart. Yes, she loved the butterfly.

A deep and wonderful scene with epic dialogue in terms of man conversing with his Creator!! I firmly recommend that You watch the entire movie, especially the part when Patch and the girlfriend are in a particular conversation. Then you will totally understand the "appearance of the butterfly" and cry tears of joy! This is a very powerful scene, but it is much more intensified when viewed in proper sequence as it relates to the movie itself! Please take my advice and watch the entire movie!!

What's this? A religious arguement on a Patch Adams clip? You people sure are smart. Seriously, though, how dumb of you two. Shame on you, mpgelatt, for arguing. just love this movie and this scene...how many times i've found myself in this position...but just like robin says in this scene:you're not worth it"!if there is really someone out there,i don't believe it myself, but if there is that someone, then he,she or it is really not worth it...we are dead before we even start to live,so what's the point, why do we try, dream and hope when everything is lost in the first place-i wish i'm wrong...
The amazing thing of this scene was left out - the butterfly. God has said to each of us - "You are worth it." And He didn;t have to, but He sent Jesus to die on the cross, to restore us to Him. Believe in Him today. He loves you.
hm...to each of as,right?well how come then everyone who is different isn't worth to your God?don't get me wrong,i don't believe in God,i just live my life respecting others, every living creature,i don't need a God,or someone who will tell me what to do,or how to live my life, what is worth for me is just a good person, someone who doesn't lie, someone whose heart is pure and honest,i don't care about rase, skin color, religion, gender, sexual orentation, for me everyone is worth.
Um, you left out the point of that scene where he sees the butterfly and realizes it "is worth it" this gives the wrong message cause you left out the climax of the scene.
EL O' EL (LOL)
This is the atheist edited version where the butterfly doesn't appear to show there might be hope and a point to this. XDD
