What is "getting paid scale"? And how does it work?

It means that the majority of actors are in a union and part of their agreement is that if they cast an actor or actress, they have to at least pay them a certain amount or what they call scale. I am not sure what the amount is but many big time actors will work for it if they believe the film is worth it but then get a bigger check on their next film to make up for it.
