  • He kicked him in the groin.

  • That's amazing accent.

  • I would watch a TV series that consisted solely of Syrio Forel teaching Arya Stark the art of swordplay.

  • "You fight like a dairy farmer."

"How appropriate. You fight like a cow!"

  • Syrio = Valar Morghulis = blind eyes of a "cat"

    ;)

Syrio lives on. Trust me. He lives on.

  • Why didn't he just PICK UP A REAL FUCKING SWORD :((

  • @Cabal777 'cause he didn't need it. ;o) At least, that's what I think. I think he's still alive.

Then again, I'm not certain even Martin knows where he is headed.

  • 2:48 ... Metal hits the ground! Syrio Forel said no to the god of death

  • Syrio lives!!

  • STRANGER DANGER

  • Valar Morghulis.

  • Who wants to bet that Syrio is still alive?

  • I always imagined Patrick Stewart as Syrio Forel.

  • @enmukee You're right that Stewart would match the description from the books much better. That being said, Miltos Yeromelou has done a pretty sweet job.

  • I'm almost done with the first book and I can tell you all GOT fans that is novel is so emotional and epic. Maybe it lacks the depth a masterpiece as LOTR has, but it is quite impressive nonetheless.

The way the book describes Syrio is just as in the series, only with no hair. Great swordsman, great quotes.

  • Is the green bar on the bottom her HP?

  • I just finished watching the series and this was one of my favorite scene too. I really hope he didn't die.

  • Read the book. Syrio has a great story regarding a cat.

  • it sounded like a metal sword hitting the floor near the end, syrio is too good to be beaten by a guard captain anyway.

  • Comment removed

  • I do hope he isn't dead. Syrio is one of my favorite characters from the books.

  • "

    Valar Morghulis"

  • i seriously doubt he is dead! he is the first sword of braavos thus unbeatable by a common captain of the guard! i dont think jaime could kill him on an one-on-one duel

  • I hope he's alive

  • Had he had a real sword...they'd be dead men very quickly...

  • @Malferter I still don't get why he didn't take one of the soldier's...

  • @edgeypoosisepic Because the guards weren't using "needles," they were using swords designed to pierce armor. Although the costuming/choreography people should have made that more obvious, because the disposed guards weren't exactly hefting broadswords and a few of them swung one-handed.

But I'm sure that's the reason he didn't take one of their swords. As Syrio himself said, "This is not the iron dance of Westeros...this is the bravo's dance, the water dance."

  • I really hope Syrio return in season 2, any man that can defeat 4 men clad in armour and with steel swords with just a wooden sword is worthy of that.

Swordsmens against a master of the blade, a forgone conclusion.

  • @Dreachon

Reading the book, doubtful, but, if you'd like a spoiler..

    SPOILER:

arya miiight just go to his homeland

  • The sound on the video was so quiet, that I paused my music and turned the sound to max. I forgot to turn it back down. I think my ears are bleeding.

  • If you actually listen to the sound effects when Arya is in the hall you can hear a sword dropping and hitting the ground. Which would imply he might still be alive because he was holding a wooden sword that was broken in half when she left the room.

  • I wrote the exactly same thing some time ago. I beleive that. I'm sure he is alive.

he is way too cool to die.

  • @ZatoOW that was my thought 2... he was holding the stub of a wooden sword. then we hear screaming and metal dropping. i figure he dove and grabbed one of the fallen swords and fought - he is way too cool/good to be dead :/

  • "What do we say to the god of death?

    Not today!"

  • Of course we don't know exactly how this duel pans out after Arya escapes, I am of the mind that Syrio would have at least tried to make use of one of the downed Lannisters guards swords. Given that he must have being wanting to give Arya as much time to escape as possible, he would surely have done everything he could to prolong the fight. It does seem a bit unlikely now that Syrio would return 6 books later, however. No ADwD spoilers please, not finished it yet.

  • the first guy who attempts to attack him is so laxy dazey as he pulls his sword its hilarious

  • Unless Syrio somehow escaped without killing Ser Meryn Trant (the Kingsguard who was sent to kill him) and without anyone noticing that Ser Meryn Trant failed to kill a man unarmored and with a wooden practice sword, he's dead.

'Look with your eyes, he had said. She saw: the knight in his pale armor head to foot, legs, throat, and hands sheathed in metal, eyes hidden behind his high white helm, and in his hand cruel steel.'

    Yeah, he's dead.

  • You could make a fortune selling 'Syrio Lives' T-Shirts at a GoT convention!

  • "You are fast for a dancing tutor."

"You are slow for a knight."

Who else thinks they should have kept this line?

  • @raerth yeah, you mean, just like the second part of Ned's "The man who passes the sentence should swing the sword", which is "If you take a man's life, you owe it to him to look into his eyes,(...) and if you cannot bear to do that, then perhaps the man does not deserve to die" ; or else Tyrion's line: "remember this, boy. all dwarfs are bastards in their father's eyes", which is, "..yet not all bastards need be dwarfs." Well I gues, all the more reasons to read the books over the show.

  • "I ... am Syrio Forel. And you will be speaking to me with more respect."

  • You know, I haven't read the books because I don't want to know if he died. I just want to think he is alive and he killed all those man.

  • There is only one god, and his name is death. And there is only one thing we say to death:

    Valar Morghulis

  • Hallo. My name is Syrio Forel. You hurt my student. Prepare to die,

  • A man knows. A man hears. A man sees.

  • as she ran away you heard a sword clang against the floor..... syrio blatantly got out somehow.

  • I really hope that Syrio isn't dead, but based on GRRM's tendency to kill off characters (Red Wedding), I wouldn't bet on it. As for all of you saying it was a metal sword you heard, this is the HBO series. In the book it mentions nothing about a metal sword falling. So, although we all hope that Syrio isn't dead, valar morghulis.

  • syrio is Robert Downey Jr. Whos with me

  • Comment removed

  • Syrio lives!!!

  • Syrio lives. The first thing you hear when Arya leaves the room is someone dropping a METAL weapon. You also hear a bunch of guys screaming, and not one of them sounds like Syrio (at least to me). :)

  • Syrio forel is the new yoda

  • HE'S SO BADASS!

  • Arya will kill them all

  • THE FIRST SWORD OF BRAAVOS DOES NOT RUN.

    BITCH.

  • Epic guy. And he looks like the dude from Dog Whisperer xD

  • Syrio Forel's style is combination of Western fencing.. Chinese gin.. and Filipino Kali..His opponent .. the knight .. as well as the guards lack finesse.. and relies on brute strength rather than skill..

  • An important thing to remember as the story goes on: What is Arya learning to do that Syrio emphasizes here....

[Hint: the issue is not white or black, and yet it is]

  • Anyone else notice the editing? At 1:57 he knocks a guy out, then again at 1:59 he knocks the same guy out but from different angle.

  • DAMN!!!!! i wish he used a real sword

  • We know Meryn isn't dead, as he shows back up. It is entirely possible that Syrio knocked him out (as he did with some of the other Knights) and escaped... or it is possible of course that he was killed. However, somehow I seriously doubt the latter. I think he is even more than meets the eye. Valar Morghulis, Valar Dohaeris.

  • I hope Syrio Forel lives and gets reunited with Arya Stark. I would also like to see the day the Lannisters as well as their scum knights and footmen get butchered by Daenerys' Dothraki warriors.

  • @morethanever100 Syrio lives on and tracks and helps arya but as a different person.. hes a shifter.

  • i always love when lannister men get hurt

  • what do we say to the god of death? I love this guy he better not be dead. I cant wait for next season

  • @GroinsItchin So far, in the books, he's about as dead as dead can be since there's no more mention of him. But who knows, maybe Arya will meet him sometime again...

  • Dead or alive. This debate is interesting. I hope he is alive, but I do not know for sure. Facts:

    1. Syrio is the best swordfighter in the Game of thrones. He defeated five man with a wooden sword. Minor spoiler. Another character from "top ten fighters list" fought three and was no match for them.

    2. Ser Meryn is only an average knight (said by many characters in the books).

    3. In order to kill somebody, you have to hit him first. Ser Meryn hitting Syrio? I just don't see it.

    .

  • @MrKritik77 If you read the books you would know he did not die he lives and hes more than a man, he continues to appear in the story. He can change..

  • @mayesticOne thats not syrio, thats jaqen, different person completely. syrio is a swordsman, jaqen is an assassin type person, they're just from the same place.

  • @MrKritik77 Isn't Ser Arthur Dayne supposed to be the greatest knight ever ?

  • too bad he died i liked this character

  • Seriously I want Ezio to mess up these guards with all of his cool counters and combinations with the hidden blade and sword.

  • Ahh yes it is ser meryn, the same knight joffrey has slap sansa while showing her neds head

  • who is knight syrio ends up fighting? he is at the queens side when they take ned prisoner when he presents roberts letter to the court. this is the only episode i notice hes in but he seems to hold some authority

  • @lethrneck4 I beleive it's Ser Meryn Trant, one of the 7 knights of the King's Watch.

  • A Mexican "dancing master" kicks 5 Samurais' (just resemble) asses with his "water dance sword skills".

  • @TheStarcraftJACKAL Mexican? You really don't know accents or ethnicities, do you? He's Greek.

  • @Celedam

    He sounds Italian, though. :-)

  • @MrKritik77 He is indeed Greek, though interestingly his natural speaking voice is as British as can be. He sounds nothing like this at all.

  • am I the only one who thinks the first few seconds of the fight is really bad choreographed and it seems like everything is delayed a bit ...

  • He's just hidding. Honest.

  • AHAH!!!!!!!!! if anyones read the books Jaqen H"gar is Syrio Forel hes a shape shifter, a bravosi, and a kick ass fighter, it was syrio forel watching arya the whole time til he thought she was ready ! you never see his true identity

  • Do not mess with Syrio Forel hahaha

  • Syrio kicked him in the nuts and walked away laughing at him, since he would never run away. You'll notice you hear a METAL sword clanging to the ground as Arya ran off.

Also Syrio's head wasn't up with Ned's either.

You were watching, not seeing. The seeing, the true seeing, that is the heart of swordplay!

    Syrio lives!

  • "Syrio forel Vs. Jaime Lannister",Now That would be an Awesome Battle!

  • That little man(Syrio Forel) Beat The Crap out of 7 guards with a Wooden fencing stick. This guy is a Fucking Badass! Give me a thumbs up if you agree he still alive after killing that Captain of the Guards?!

  • @Prepare4Buddha

The Hound vs Ser Barriston vs Jamie.

  • @Zaxxen69 I sure hope that you are right. I LOVE this guy!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Zaxxen69

My respect my friend. You caught the gist of it.

  • @Zaxxen69 yeah damn he kicked some asses haha^^... syrio 4 the win!

  • @Zaxxen69 If he did this with a wooden stick what in the name of all that is fuckable can that fool do with a real sword!?!?

  • @Zaxxen69 A lot of assuming here, I don't think that Cersei would have allowed Syrio's head to be put up. For one thing, it would have been a political nightmare with Braavos and would have weakened her son's hold on the throne by fighting a war on several fronts.

  • @Zaxxen69 I hope thats true, he is an awesome character!

  • @Zaxxen69 na read the books. he dead

  • @TheDeserthunta

And yet it still doesn't stop the theories. He didn't die "onscreen" in the books either.

Me... I'd certainly like for him to pop up, but... A Song of Ice and Fire just isn't that kind of story, unfortunately. (Though, with all the

  • @AngryWeaselShanatos true but they say none of starks men made it out alive

  • @TheDeserthunta

Well, yeah. (I mean, you could argue that Syrio did count as "Stark's man" and was just someone he hired to teach Arya. Still... it's not that kind of story.)

  • @Zaxxen69

Listen to Zaxxen. He knows these things.

  • Syrio Ferell bravest man ever in Westeros... if he had a steel blade all of them would have been dead...

  • Syrio is dead. In the book he is clearly killed considering the person he was fighting is still alive even in the most recent book.

The whole bit of that chapter was that you use your eyes to see. As arya runs away she looks back and sees that meryn was covered from head to toe with steel plate. there was no way syrio could have killed him even if he had a real sword.

They don't show it so well here. But syrio was killed. stop argueing with facts and read the fucking books you damn mummer

  • @TheLeonardoKun

Syrio Forel didn't kill anybody there. It's quite clear in the books that he only knocked a bunch of people unconscious; it's nearly impossible to kill armored men with a wooden practice sword. Saying that he was "clearly" killed in the books is a gross over simplification; in the books, it ends just like it does here. The last we see of Syrio, he's quite alive...and his body is never found.

  • @JuggyFWB

i'll send you a pm as this message i just wrote was WAy to long.

  • @JuggyFWB

wait, are you saying he didn't kill anyone in the book? i mean, if we want to get technical about it parrying someone's blade into their comrade's jugular might not count, but crushing their adam's apple with a training sword isn't nearly as ambiguous. the book specifically describes the fallen guards as "dead or dying" before Arya makes a run for it.

  • @TheLeonardoKun Sorry to say,but HBO Doesn't follow the Conventional rules of Fictional Books. It's usually at the Agreeance of the Director & Author of the Book to Loosely change the contents of the series from the books to make things more appealing to the Audience & for Ratings. We've seen this already happen with HBO's True Blood, where they deviated from the books & made it way more interesting. We'll see if Syrio Forel lives or is killed depending on the future episodes of the series!

  • @TheLeonardoKun The HBO series is called "Game of Thrones" instead of "A Song of Ice & Fire." That automatically tells you that HBO will deviate from the books to suit the purpose of establishing a wider audience & to gain higher Ratings.

  • Some of you are ridiculous. Meryn Trant fought Syrio Forel, besides the fact that Meryn Trant and Syrio were fighting to the death and that both of them are incredibly skilled fighters, in the book it was more clearly noted that Syrio was killed, yeah it wasn't outright said, but Syrio broke his sword blocking and incoming attack, hence sword breaking during an attack = the attack got through.

Meryn Trant survived the encounter and the 1 sword does not run. Syrio is deader than a dornishman.

  • Look I love Syrio but only the members of the Stark entourage were set up on spikes, remember how they were only coming for Arya not Syrio, but feel free to believe what you wish. Dead or Alive doesn't matter as we won't be seeing him again. I apologize for this to be spoilery but

  • Syrio is alive.

  • What do we say to the God of death? Go get buggered by a horse.

  • @bgdancer100

    Perfect! :-)

  • Don't spoil it for me, but I dearly hope that Syrio survived.

  • i am about halfway through the first book, i got to say the characters in the show are ridiculously well cast

  • I read that in the sixth book there will be a return of an early character. He's never said that Syrio is dead, so I can have hope (as foolish as that hope may be XD )

  • Syrio lives! (I'm hoping that Syrio is one of the Faceless Men ;)

  • Why didn't Arya give him her sword?

  • @Kingpool215 Or, alternatively, why didn't he just pick up one of theirs after he knocked them out?

  • @Kingpool215

It was packed in one of her chests, she didn't have it on her

  • @Wupster1 I meant her wooden sword. Which she picks up from the ground at 1:12

  • He's not dead... read the books.

  • @mg2380 omg why do people like you have to do that. Same with all the harry potter fans, they reveal a major surprise from the book they have read and spoil it for everyone who hasnt read the book. Dont be a asshole and ruin all the good parts for the people who just want to watch the damn show and find things out for themselves.

  • @liamdudeeee It's not even a reveal/spoiler. He's not mentioned again (Except Arya's memories) in the books so far. In the book it was up in the air, but it is pretty darn safe to say he is dead. The show is the one that makes it way more ambiguous.

  • no way he was going to defeat a fully armoured captain of guard with a small wooden handle. RIP dude

  • What do we say to the God of Death?

  • 1 person said 'Today'.

  • Foreign Basterd ! Clonk!!!!

  • syrio forel died ser meryl survived!

  • @Mullsjo123 There is no evidence that Forel died, we would have seen his corpse/head otherwise or Meryl would have bragged about killing the first sword of Braavos. I think that Forel knocked him out and just silently made his way out.

  • @sonofspartacus Well, you're assuming that with the exception of Ser Barristan, that Robert's Kingsguard was chosen for their intellect. I don't believe that Meryn knew what the First Sword of Braavos was, and probably believed that the wood sword he snapped was it.

  • @sonofspartacus well theres been 4 other books and theres only two left and he hasnt made a reappearance

  • @JDrakeify Sure, but Syrio is not the only character which fate remains unknown for the moment and in GRRM world, the first thing that you learn is that you must consider somebody dead once you see his cold corpse:) BEside, 2 books, almost 2000 pages, that's a lot of events, quite enough to see master Forel making a comeback somewhere somehow. At least, in my humble opinion:)

  • Ser merrin trandt is a badass

  • @soulpiper

Ser Meryn is an arsehole, poor Sansa

  • how fucking badass is that, he takes on like 5 fully armored knightrs and kicks their asses

  • @halofable574 With a wooden sword, no less.

  • @kevlonk I know right thats what makes it so awesome, its bittersweet, because you don't know if syrio survives but I can't stop cheering when i see this!

  • @halofable574 With a wooden sword no less!

  • @halofable574 thats nothing compared to Ezio

  • @halofable574 Yes, and he only uses a stick. If he has a sharp sword he would have slayed all of them blindfolded and still has plenty of time to teach Arya more sword lessons.

  • @halofable574 only one of them was a knight, ser Meryn, the rest were lannister household guards who'd possibly served in the red keep for years and most probably had not seen any real fight other then their usual training and were facing the FIRST SWORD of Braavos.

  • Boromir just died, again

  • "You said right, but you went left!"

"And now you're a dead girl."

    Syrio knows the truth.

  • @Nazdreg1

What is it with jerks trying to seem clever and insisting upon posting spoilers to prove it.

Yeah, it's obvious for anyone who's read the books, no need to try and ruin things for other people who haven't.

  • @floppykid

I do not rely on the books, because I did not read them. I just quote my favourite text part of the video. To call this spoiling seems to be a bit harsh, doesnt it?

I like it, because I like the philosophy behind it. And I dont do this in order to look clever or something, but because I want to honour the cleverness displayed in these words. If you don't like that, I will respect that, but your opinion doesnt make me a jerk, does it? Whatever. Take it easy. ;)

  • The metal you hear falling is more fighting going on downstairs are all throughout the tower of the hand. The white cloak is Ser Meryn Trant, who is still alive in book four! Sadly I think Syrio is dead, but anything is possible!

  • @MrUnatagoto

    ok, enough of spoilers, ok?

  • @rogerpenna Don't read the comments on Youtube

  • @MrUnatagoto Syrio kicked him the balls and walked away laughing at him, not running away :) Least I hope so :)

  • Logic would say he's dead but I heard metal fall on the floor and Syrio was using a wooden sword, my hope and gut says he's alive, although anything is possible. Syrio looked way too lively to let that be his last stand.

  • You can cleary hear that sound of dropped STEEL sword - not wooden. I'm thinking about it all the time and maybe, Syrio isn't dead, and maybe we ll see him in the upcoming books? His "death" isn't show cleary as Ned so I'm wondering, first book, where his death wasn't show, and now in Series when you can hear this sound of steel sword. We ll see when the end comes.

  • "What do we say to the god of death?"

    "Not today."

    Just so.

  • @LW3KFK4: Syrio is a fan favorite, but I think a lot of it comes from the shows. Who knows? Maybe Martin created him as an afterthought and had no idea that so many people would enjoy his character so much, so he's furiously rewriting book 6 to include Syrio as a main protagonist.

  • @mehal2 I don't usually approve of authors pivoting on the spot to pander to their audience, seems cheap to betray your original vision but in this case I can't imagine anyone (myself included) objecting to a 'resurrection' of the Syrio character. Besides, maybe Jaqen H’ghar is Syrio. It's more wishful thinking than a theory, but it could work.

  • @LW3KFK4: Agreed, he hasn't turned up yet and maybe he isn't in Braavos. As far as escaping Kings Landing, did the Lannisters really know who he was or what he was capable? The guards he knocked out sure didn't, and the book suggests that Trant didn't think too highly of him. If Trant got knocked out by Forel, he wouldn't send the Kingsguard after him for the sake of his pride. He'd pretend like it never happened.

I agree that he's probably dead though. Call it wishful fanboy thinking :-)

  • @mehal2, (I knew that would be a response, he may act like it didn't happen if Syrio escaped b/c of pride). Arya, who escaped, was reported, which is worse than reporting that Syrio escaped, because Arya is the one who would make a valuable prisoner by the Lannisters.

But yeah, under wishful fanboy thinking, I hope that I'm wrong, and Syrio did escape. Also, George RR Martin is unorthodox in writing, he killed a lot of "good" characters, some of which made me very upset in the later books.

  • It's always possible that he knocked Meryn Trant unconscious. Trant isn't the best swordsman in the Kingsguard, so it is possible. As for escaping, he is Syrio Forel. Ned Stark was gone, and he wouldn't have been able to find Arya. It wouldn't surprise me to see him back in Braavos.

  • @mehal2, I can say that he hasn't turned up yet, if he's alive. Also, he hasn't been seen in Braavos. Arya remembers his words often. Her lessons with Syrio pays off, but it appears (from the books) that Syrio is dead. Syrio wouldn't have been able to escape King's Landing without the guards seeing him. If Ser Meryn Trant was defeated, he would have had the rest of the King's guard hunt him down (thus giving evidence that he's alive). Arya on the other hand was small and was disguised as a boy.

  • Syrio lives its obvious, he was able to disarm and defeat them all with a wooden sword, plus at the end you can clearly hear a sword drop before the screaming starts.

Syrio wasnt holding a sword the other guy was.

Which means Syrio also disarmed him just as easily and probably stuck what was left of his wooden sword directly in that knights eyeball.

  • @0ilikeboobies0 @HollyMartins, he doesn't live. He had no way to escape after Kings Landing was taken, and he didn't know of the passage ways which Varys and Tyrion knew about in the 2nd book. Also, Ser Meryn Trant survives that battle with Syrio, which is evidence that Syrio didn't escape. The sword that drops could mean anything else.

  • Classiest motherfucker.

  • Is it just me or was that scene the last time in the season we saw that character (the one fighting Syrio)?

  • @kruse001 He later slaps Sansa on the kings behalf I believe, so no.

  • Comment removed

  • @mrmemanme Luckily for us he isn't working with the mentality of a 12 year old lol.

  • @JPearson1987 they never say stuff like that, it would be so much funnier
