Don't some of these people realise, that witout the trucks, the supermarket shelves would be empty in a fortnight?

Put freight on the rail/canal? How many Tesco/Asda/Sainsbury's etc. have a railway or canal near enough to allow deliveries direct to the store? Not many. The rest would still need to use a lorry to transport the goods from the manufacturer to railway/canal and from the railway/canal to the store.
