Also, GNU/Linux is a UNIX work-alike. There are others besides it. There is BSD (FreeBSD , openBSD, and netBSD are flavors of BSD) and it fills the same role as GNU/Linux, Windows OSes on the Windows NT kernel (NT is what powers 2000, XP, Vista, and 7) and Mac OS X.
GNU is the operating system; Linux is the kernel. In other words, what you often call Linux is actually GNU. Linux is a small part of Ubuntu, whereas GNU is a huge part of it.
Wow, i didn't think that this would be **that** fucking awful, though i should've assumed so the moment that i saw "Windoze" vs UNIX written on note paper with a permanent marker.
Companies have to pay to have their operating systems tested to be certified a UNIX type system, meeting certain requirements. That is what makes something "UNIX". Windows is better at some things, UNIX type/UNIX like systems are better at others. UNIX is generally more stable, and in fact a while back Microsoft accidentally leaked documents stating that they thought Unix was better if that means anything to you. Windows has improved in some ways, not in others.
Unix(tm) is a trademark. You could install Solaris if you want a freely downloadable Unix. But that would be cruel. Ubuntu is a good beginner unix-ish thing, you could also try PC-BSD for an easy to use BSD too.
first the most stupid is ''programs not close'' maybe you have heard of the word UPGRADE! 2nd if you don't have idea of using pc's just quit using them or go learn first!!
That is not exactly correct. Linux is Unix-like operating system - meaning it behaves like Unix most of the time - and is INSPIRED by Minix, educational mini Unix; it did not actually use any of its code. Therefore, Linux represents a free, yet independent implementation of the Unix concept. Ubuntu is just one of the distributions of Linux, distribution being a version of the system that a company or individual makes in order to offer a complete OS with an assortment of programs and utilities.
@littlemattjk Linux is UNIX even if it doesn't come directly from AT&T UNIX. Remember that UNIX isn't just an OS, but a philosophy. As for the official name, people call BSD and Linux UNIX-like because The Open Group has the UNIX trademark and the Open Source community doesn't want to pay for UNIX Specifications (Neither do I ;D).
If you just want to try it out, look for distributions (that is, different versions each with different specialties) of Linux that have a LiveCD version. The Linux distro loads off the CD and you can try it out without installing it(though it's much slower than when it's just installed on your hard drive). ubuntu has a LiveCD version.
Just about any program/suite for Windows has a Linux equivalent (and they're all free).
If you are thinking about switching to a UNIX-like system, go with openSUSE. It has rather remarkable hardware support out of the box (comparable to PCLinuxOS and Ubuntu), and comes with tons of packages, and has YaST, which is by far the best system configuration tool ever invented. Ever. No joke. The best.
I really don't like Ubuntu because the creators (I really would rather not start a flame war) kinda fucked up the command line interface. OpenSUSE does do some funky stuff, but not as much.
OpenBSD is amazing for web servers. Easy to install too. I use Suse Linux for my workstation though, for the bells and whistles without having to compile them. For my workstation I try other distros periodically, but I'm stoked with OpenBSD 4.1 on the server eh.
I just hate the way MS tries to make people into dependent MS commodities. Addicted breast-feeders. Never!!
I'm interested in the same thing. Tired of buying hard-drives and not having any idea how things are working behind the keys. Unix, linux, solaris, whatever as long as it "plays well with others". So why do you think it took so long, for both of us, to consider UNIX?
The main con of Unix/Linux is that there aren't any big name games for it outside of emu.
*tears off shirt*
ONE DAY I WILL INVENT THE ULTIMATE OPERATING SYSTEM THAT HAS ALL THE RELIABILITY AND STABILITY OF UNIX COMBINED WITH THE MARKETABILITY OF WINDOWS!!! THEN LET MICROSOFT TREMBLE!!!
Based on what? It solves all of the typical problems plaguing systems modeled off of UNIX design and even integrates new things from Sun Microsystems only seen typically on servers. It's a better target for legal and management reasons. Suit yourself if you are deaf and won't try it based on presumptions from 1990's use of OS[1-9]. Packages install using user friendly operation, are self-isolated and do not care about dependencies because the system as a whole is engineered not just bits.
So is Solaris. OpenSolaris has a leg up on FreeBSD with regards to virtualization, as it has VirtualBox with Crossbow integration, Zones, BrandZ (Linux translation under Zones similar to FreeBSD compat)
OpenSolaris has a modern version of GNOME, and is much better suited for desktops than older iterations of Solaris. Though from a management perspective it'd be best to wait for the 2008.11 release of the new Indiana project, which has taken advantage of ZFS snapshots making pkg mgmt robust.
isn't doom 3 a big name game? it runs outside of emulation, just as quake 4. For the other games, you may just use wine (it's not emulation! wine is not an emulator!), i can run many games in wine, just like World of warcraft, counter strike source, battlefield 2 and many others.. The things just go bad in games with gameguard, and for some ATI graphic cards.
Also, most things that come out of iD Software works on Linux. And like 90% of programs that use OGL instead of DX will work perfectly under WINE. And quite a few games are working perfectly or near perfectly with WINE (Guild Wars, WoW, Half-Life 2, Day of Defeat: Source, and CS:S are all prime examples)

Lastly, GNU is not UNIX.
GNU is an acronym for GNU's Not Unix (this is called a recursive acronym).

Use something more recent than windows 95.
Select Process tab on task manager to close a stubborn program.
Norton is a useless piece of crap that hogs resources.
Google AVG Free.
If some hardware fails, then it's the hardware's fault.

@kawless no its not the hardwares fault all the time. its the OS's fault hence the 64bit mouse issues with windows 7

Why are you comparing a set of standards to an operating system? Windows is an OS, UNIX is OS guidelines.

Since I have purchased a Asus EEE 900 I have run everyday computing with eeebuntu, and it all just works! No Thanks to anymore from M$N !
So given the amount of compu power and portability I suggest looking into the Netbook marked aswell.
