This is simple,Once afain an interesting piece of music fell to the hands of a perceived creative editor or producer The music and IF we got to SEE the performance is good.
Janes are how old now? I saw them in Vancouver in 1991 at the pacific colosseum and they were already 7 years old at THAT point!! Remember that Perry was gigging in LA and there are videos out there from 1984!! The one thing about Janes (actually there are several) that is super-cool is that they released a LIVE album as their 1st!!! think about the BALLS to do that !! They of course released Nothings shocking I think within 18 months of that BUT it still was very cool, and I think shows talent
I don't think Dave fucked up the Chilis, I think he took them in a more experimental direction, in fact i doubt if they'd have done Californication without Dave injecting some new blood, and then Frusciante coming back to resurrect himself. The Chilis have always been invigorated by new guitar players, whether it be Hillel Slovak, Dave or John. I would argue that John Frusciante has ultimately fucked up the Chilis, taking them in a commercial pop direction of late
man, the show i went to was way better than this. there was a vibe to it that i loved. this isn't very good. i could see why eric avery felt uncomfortable about the show. i'm not buying the dvd. this is not the band i fell in love with. i'll be like eric and just move on. at least i got to see the classic line-up live just once. and it was a great fuckin' gig.
man.. perry doesn't even sing these songs anymore. its because he can't. this is obviously NOT the same JA from late 80's and early 90's which is fine?... but? to what degree. its like listening to the CD but with a bad karaoke performance attached. they don't cut it they way they used to... but so many who venture back- don't either. i'm fortunate i saw them in the early years. they are truly a great and innovative band! i'm just upset they can't hit it anymore*
The studio version has 2 guitar parts going at the same time. Live, it's just dave by himself so the song sounds like it has holes in it. especialy when the solo starts, no rythum gutiar at all.
@flubno That's why Dave almost never solos without a delay pedal. He tries to fill up the space live.
It's also why my band doesn't do the doubling up on rhythm tracks anymore like we used to. We're a three-piece, so the last time we went in to the studio, we all played together in the same room. Just guitar, drums, and bass. Then our guitarist went in to overdub the vocals. But when the guitar takes a solo, it doesn't sound empty, it just sounds like a guitar taking a solo with bass+drums.
Some people obviously don't 'get' Janes Addiction. They took alternative influences like Siouxsie and The Banshees and The Cure, and combined those sensibilities with the power and extravagence of hard rock and metal. They are the quintessential, and the definitive alternative 'rock' band. Van Halen my arse.
I love this, but could you imagine what would of had become of Jane's addiction if they had never ever split in the first place. Jane's addiction in the late late 80s to early 90s was a perverted majestic wonder and that time period defined what the band was all about. I'm sure if they would of had sticked together, God knows what great albums they would of had produced. But despite that, I'm glad they are back and they didn't let a great thing go to waste.
@dimipe I think I may be a little to late on this response, but if you are still willing to try for some of their older performances look for Janes Addiction Three Days Live Milan itally 1990. I love that performance, Hope it will make you change your mind!
@dimipe dude.. this is not jonas brothers, this is Jane's Addiction.. I like Van Halen very much, and I can't see the similarity =| And that motherfucker with the guitar is Dave Navarro.. that guy got his own style since the moment he found the band =|
But it's your opinion, people should respect it =]
@SenhorNuno I do like VH too, especially the late 70's DLR period, so I think the first obvious similarity here is the singer's stage antics, while he doesn't hold a candle to Roth's vocal abilities (judging from that video). I know who Navarro is and I give him credit (if only for getting to screw Carmen Electra). I also admit that I knew really nothing of Jane's Addiction until seeing those vids, and that they look to me as a band trying too hard to sound like early VH, yet failing.
I'd just like to specify I'm not a hater or a troll but just someone who wanted to discover a band I thought would be great judging from its strong reputation, and ended up right disappointed seeing the clips from this last DVD. Call me ignorant at best (though that would be totally incorrect, but still).
@dimipe I understand what you're sayin'.. I saw/heard this and I can guarantee you that they are not at their best here, I've seen way better performances of Jane's Addiction here on youtube =\
@SenhorNuno Yeah as I said I'm clueless on this one so maybe I should regret being so 'definitive' on my first judgement only from that performance. Anyway I just ask to be standed correct so please people bring on the links of this band's great performances =). (But hey seriously, the singer is baaad here isn't he ?).
@dimipe well first off the only people that match up to eddie van halen are jimmy page and jimmy hendrix but navarro is not a bad guitarist. secondly yea the singer has seen better days but you can't really fight aging vocal cords hes like 51 or something.
Hm, apparently this band is a Van Halen rip-off and the singer is more than prone to play the David Lee Roth part (even if caricaturing what is already a caricature always results in a trainwreck, which doesn't miss there).
@trd2009 People's voices change. He was younger when they recorded the album. Steven Tyler from Aerosmith doesn't sing the same now as he did in the 70's. Bruce Springsteen's voice has even changed somewhat.
@maddogwally This was a halloween show....Stephen Perkins is wearing a mask (the drummer). Obviously, he was wearing a costume of sorts. To top that off, the frontman of a band is supposed to be flashy. It's up to the singer, the frontman, to make people want to get into the show, because most could care less about the rest of the band.

Take VH circa 1978, make Eddie play with his feet and DLR sing with his ass and you got this band.
